great video as always, it is true, there are many turningpoints in History when things could have gone in the opposite direction, I believe 468 the attempt to retake Carthage from the Vandals is the main one. As Belisarius managed to conquer the entire North Africa in a few months with only 18.000 men, it is still difficult to urdestand how even only 30-50.000 did not in 468

The real descendants of the Romans are the Romance peoples such as the Italians, French, Spaniards, Portuguese and Romanians. There were also enclaves of the Western Roman Empire in the form of the Britto-Roman kingdoms of Gwynedd, Powys, Morgannwg and Rheged. Of course something fundamental did happen in 476. Rome was not burned down, and life didn't change completely overnight, but that doesn't mean that Odoacer's coup was just nothing. Odoacer didn't take the title of emperor and he didn't bother to have a puppet emperor on the throne. That is fundamental. He didn't bother to pay even lip service to the law. He did pay lip service to Zeno because Zeno could be a very real threat. There was no emperor in the West anymore and until Charlemagne there wouldn't be. There was no Roman Empire anymore in the West. Italy, first under Odoacer and later under the Ostrogoths, became a state like all others. That is fundamental. First there was a Roman Empire in the West and later there wasn't. You have to pick some date and 476 is the best candidate I think, because the title of Emperor disappeared at that date.

I suspect he did expect to be made emperor by Basiliscus, the eastern emperor and husband of his maternal aunt. But while the regalia were being shipped to Constantinople Basiliscus was overthrown and Zeno returned to power.

Great content as always Maiorianus. Do you ever plan to do a video about Eleutherius, the Exarch of italy that was almost declared the new emperor of the West by the Pope during the times of Heraclius? Or even Gregory, the Exarch of Africa that in the mid 7th Century declared himself the "Emperor of Africa", and was even invited to Rome by the Pope, before being defeated and killed by the newcoming arabs? Both can be considered the last two people to claim the western purple before Charlemagne

I do feel the need to point out one detail, though, since it was repeated so many times in this video: You may want to look up the pronunciation of the verb form of the word "rebel". It's not the same as the pronunciation of the noun form of the same word, which you seem to be assuming.

I’ve almost finished Adrian Goldsworthy’s How Rome Fell, on Audible. Audible doesn’t have a good history selection, but they do have most of this author’s, fortunately. It’s definitely worth reading, I learned a lot, but will listen a second time. It’s full of detail and well-written, without too much boring history of the Church, but has the usual abominable Latin and Greek pronunciation by the reader, a guaranteed defect in Audible books. Because the reader is British, not American like me, I can’t figure out all the Latin/Greek names he uses, he doesn’t pronounce Rs or Hs, but sticks them in where there aren’t any. He seems to be attempting the Italian of a thousand years later, he’d be better off imitating Catalan, it’s a lot closer to Latin pronunciation. But, I think I dozed off here and there, as I tend to do to listening to even exciting books in the evening. Waking up between 1:00 and 4:00 am as I do, my body just doesn’t want to stay awake at 8:00 pm, however much my brain wants to! I still have a nice, juicy stack of Dr. Goldsworthy’s books queued up to listen to.

I am always hesitant to comment here, because I don't want to be redundant, and that you very likely covered the information in another video, you are so so very thorough. But I will give it a shot. This summer, and autumn I was in a Rome frenzy, reading and re-reading four books at once (Peter Heather, Bryan Ward Perkins,Chris Wickham and Adrian Goldsworthy.) Haven't many historians revised the assumptions that have been made for very very long about Romulus Augustulus, Orestes and even Odavacar? Orestes had played king maker for a decade, and he could not take the throne himself because he was too close genealogically to his barbarian roots - I'm not sure which group of barbarians he was descended from at this moment, but there were a few… His troops, and the the diffeyrent forces of which you speak, holding Italy at that time, were of such mixed composition that it was impossible to tell which army was the most "Roman" and which wasn't? These forces were a farrago of subjects, citizens and foedorati from every corner of the empire and its periphery, with Germanics as the majority and in most leadership positions.... Wouldn't that explain the game that the Senate played at this time: they wouldn't be as interested in which usurper had the most Roman or Germanic name, but which force was the least likely to sack the city, which had suffered three already in that century? Allegedly. Odavacar sent the imperial regalia to Constantinople, not directly usurping rule in Italy, but nearly saying "there was no need for a new western emperor,” that there was only one emperor in Constantinople he answered to... I know he minted coins that bore his name, image, and the word "Rex", which, of course, means king, and in this case, he was very specifically talking about the province of Italy, rather than a people, or a nation (as Alaric had been and Theoderic would be), I guess positioning himself as a proper "client king”, unlike the Visigoths and the vandals It all gets incredibly murky, and doesn't really sort itself out until the Ostrogoths make their appearance.... It is this very ambivalence that Justinian exploits in the sixth century, to justify his devastating invasion of Italy and the year of 476 suddenly takes on paramount importance/---I think it was Procopius, who wrote it---and it was all done in the spirit of propaganda that would lay the foundation for Justinian's reconquest , and out of the chaos of the late fifth century, 476 was put forward as something concrete, for the sake of clarity and agitprop? That year became emblematic of the great "fall of Rome" ...to Barbarians....

If there are typos, I am sorry, but I am on a treadmill. And you may notice that I chose to use the alternative spelling "Odavacar" because I can't remember how to spell it the more common way

I also want to say that as far as a "niche" topic, since you have started, there have been an array of channels about Rome that have been put up, some of them definitely dealing with the late empire. It seems that this is becoming more and more of a popular topic, not surprisingly, because people feel like our society is about to crash, and they want to find markers from the past.

@@steeldriver1776 Both Confucianism and Legalism played significant roles in maintaining the Chinese Empire, albeit with different approaches and philosophies. Confucianism, based on the teachings of Confucius, emphasized the importance of morality, ethics, and respect for social hierarchies. He defended values such as family harmony, the virtue of the ruler and obedience to superiors. In the context of the Chinese Empire, Confucianism provided a moral and cultural framework that promoted social stability. Imperial rulers adopted Confucian principles, seeking to rule with wisdom and benevolence. The imperial examination, a system of selecting civil servants based on knowledge of the Confucian classics, was an important tool for maintaining the hierarchical structure and ensuring the competence of rulers and bureaucrats. On the other hand, legalism, a pragmatic political philosophy, emphasized the authority of the state and the need for clear laws and harsh punishments to maintain order and control. Loyalists believed that government should be centralized and exercise strong authority over citizens. In the context of the Chinese Empire, legalism played a role in unifying the country and consolidating imperial power. He established a system of strict laws and clear punishments to ensure obedience and social cohesion. Imperial rulers used legalism to strengthen the state and maintain political stability. Although Confucianism and Legalism have different approaches, they complemented each other in the context of the Chinese Empire. Confucianism provided an ethical and moral foundation, while legalism provided a structure of government and control. Together, these philosophical systems helped establish a lasting social and political order in the Chinese Empire, contributing to its maintenance over time.

@@TheUrobolos Chinese empires are referred to as "dynasties" because there was a sense of continuity between them. Chinese leaders, from 221 BC until 1912, used the title "huangdi" to signify imperial rulership, indicating a consistent understanding of imperial power. Each new dynasty in China was seen as ruling the same empire as its predecessors, with the Ming dynasty in the 16th century considering themselves as ruling the same state as the Han dynasty in the 1st century. This continuity was reinforced by the adoption of Chinese titles by foreign invaders like the Mongols, who assimilated into the Chinese imperial tradition. In the West, the concept of dynasties exists within larger empires. For example, the Julio-Claudian and Flavian dynasties are considered rulers of the Roman Empire. However, Western history also acknowledges that dynastic changes and political upheavals, such as civil wars, brought about significant changes in ruling dynasties. Despite these changes, historians still recognize a continuity in the territorial realm, such as "England" remaining consistent even with dynastic shifts and political transformations. This parallel is drawn to highlight that China demonstrated a greater degree of continuity in its political traditions and institutions over time compared to England, making it appropriate to refer to "Emperors of China" and a single "Chinese Empire" rather than distinct empires for each dynasty. Overall, the use of the term "dynasties" in China reflects the perceived continuity of imperial rule, while in the West, the concept of dynasties exists within larger imperial frameworks but acknowledges the potential for significant political changes and disruptions.

If Adaric or Bracila or Nepos had succeeded Rome would still be an Empire. Justinian would have assisted the heir of Julius Nepos to destroy the Vandals and the Visigoths as Justinian did utilizing Narses and Bellisarius ef in our timeline. Then the Franks would intervene in Italy as they did in our timeline. They would have been utterly defeated and Belisarius would have occupied Gaul and reestablish the Rhine frontiers. The Romans would also conquer entire Spain. In Britain a small expeditionary force would have turned the Celtic kingdoms into client states and totally expel the pagan Angles and Saxons. Theodoric would have been confined to Pannonia and Dacia and create a great Ostrogothic Empire there, until the arrival of the Slavs and the Avars. The combined Ostrogothic and Roman force would have kept Slavs and Avars at bay. Central Europe would be partitioned between Slavs - Avars, Ostrogoths and Lombards in Noricum. The former Western Empire would be restored with the exception of Noricum and northern England. Great Britain would be a Celtic land until the arrival of the Vikings two centuries later and Rome would defeat the Persians and the Arab Muslims due to its power. Islam would be an obsolete religion by now. So in hindsight that bastard Odoacer really shaped the modern world..
