This is a video about how many things on the internet intentionally get you addicted and drain your capacity to focus

People are more focused on productivity and creative output now more than ever. So much so that we're always looking for 'hacks' to increase our focus and mental performance. However, content on the internet is purposely designed to be addicting; simply changing the way we use the internet could be the productivity 'hack' that we're looking for.

Lazy as opposed to helping the people around you and the planet you live on. People working and being productive is what moves the world forward which helps all of us. If greed is creating better lives for all of us then sure greed is what we should strive for. If you have trouble making that connection just do something more "down to earth" like working at a hospital or at a home for the elderly. There is a need for that even if you are able to avoid it. Just because its not in your face or doesn't help someone directly doesn't mean that it is not contributing to a better world.

That spike in dopamine mentioned when you don't know when the next reward will occur is mentioned often in psychology, but one example I remember in particular had to do with doing things for a significant other. When things are always done methodically versus somewhat randomly, the reaction received each time the reward is given is greater than when the reward is given over a strict schedule. That is, if you give your girlfriend or wife flowers on the first of February versus the 14th, the reaction and emotions she will experience will be higher and different than when she would otherwise be expecting them. If you then give them on valentines day and the week after, you'll likely also manage to elicit a similar response on the 21st, but not on the 14th. This has to do with expectation and exceeding what is expected in a random way. If your girlfriend gets flowers from you every Friday, the dopamine response will taper off over time. This is why in management, when it comes to rewards, it makes more sense to have some level of randomness to encourage your employees rather than only a reward at certain time (like the end of the month or quarter). A random, unannounced bonus has better effects than a scheduled one in many cases. Thus, if you have an unannounced competition for say, call performance, you will pique interests in more people on any given day versus on just a day where that competition is mentioned. Silent competitions on random days once, twice, or sometimes not at all during given months work wonders.

i dont know about any researches but i can clearly say out of my own experience : this continuous clicking for novelty really can cause addiction ! i for me, this got really bad when i moved into the NEWS sphere, some effects were that i started understanding politics and economics better and better since i combined this with heavy books, but catching yourself opening dozens of news sites truly HOPING that somewhere a bomb went off by terrorists is really strange ! I mean, its not that i wished someone some harm, but i caught myself so ofter just searching for this adrenaline. This recent Turkey coup 2 months ago, i was watching it with such a hipe in the night as if it were a final football cup game or sth ! Holy shit

your searching for Dopamine not adrenaline. If you want adrenaline, go race car driving or start sky diving. Guess you could inject yourself with Epipens, but I dont recommend that, its not pleasurable but more like a nervous wreck prior to strange rapid beating effects in the chest area suggesting an imminent explosion is about to occur.

I do agree - I quit all console "open world" games (and most games). They UTTERLY kill your life. GTA5, FarCry3/4, SkyRim - some people can spend weeks and even starve themselves with no sleep - very dangerous class A drug equivalents. Maybe a video about the dangers of gaming addiction.
@boofdaclown7866
@boofdaclown7866 7 жыл бұрын
The amount of people who do that are so extremely low compared to how many people are playing the games. Nothing like a class A drug. Those drugs have terrible health effects, these video games don't do that. The only health effects are from your own negligence and possibly sitting a bit to long, but that's it. Been gaming for year just like a lot of people here and we are completely fine without any problems with addiction on these games.

Thanks for the video, it is well done and understandable. Also, I would like to suggest looking at meditation. Practicing meditation makes you much more sensitive to these mental triggers and trains you to catch yourself doing bullshit much sooner.

I need to quit using internet for aimless entertainment and to stop procrastinating. I got addicted to non functional use of internet on 2019 or 2020. I only got freed from it in two or three periods in which I stopped non functional use of internet altogether (these lasted a few weeks to two months). My conclusion is that I became a person that either wastes many hours a day using internet for non functional purposes or stops doing this completely. I can't just entertain myself a little with it; I lose the control if I allow me to scroll or check recommendations. As it's extremely harmful to waste so many hours, my only option is to stop completely with this. It's a question of survival: I really need to work in certain things, but waste of time and procrastination are in my way. This video was very motivational for me. I decided this is the time to change. I decided I will try not to use internet for aimless entertainment anymore, not for a single second. I will try to use internet only for constructive, useful for my life, preferably necessary things. It's 25/05/2024 today and everytime I use internet for non functional, unjustified purposes in the next 30 days I will register it here. I will also register how much this change will improve my productivity.

Four arguments is filled to the brim with naturalistic fallacy fantasies and arguments and kneecaps itself by expanding its reasons past the authors expertise, when its talking about advertising it can be very interesting but the bias is real when you see how he ignores televisions parallels with other mediums because hes playing favorites. The third chapter in particular is full of so much psuedo-science that I'm genuinely shocked somebody who makes "science" videos would seriously recommend it when much better books are available on the subject.

I never been happier after deleting my Twitter and Facebook accounts. No more fake people trying to win a game - who has a best Facebook facade. No more drama or fake news. I never been happier after I stopped listening Radio and Watching TV three years ago. I have no TV and Radio in my house. Yes, people think I am crazy, but everyone fears different, the unknown. I never been happier after ditching TV series, most of the movie entertainment or porn. I do like movies and music, I am just selective what to consume. Mostly I do Play Music with my music pass, sometimes I do Play Movies by renting once in a while. Usually from 3 to 5 movies in a year. So I am not consumed by these things. Some things I don't consume at all. Like looking CNN, which stands for Constantly Negative News, by the way... You can be the same. You start to realise how brainwashed people are. You come to visit them, they are either swiping right or left, or just watching tell lie vision. I am not saying that KZfaq I watch is all amazing. But sure you can find something like this video you can actually enjoy. I barely have anything in my house, meaning stuff, devices - I am minimalist. Life is so much happier this way! Try the same, become UNKNOWN :)

For me internet has been extremely helpful, more than my school and university. I have learned huge amount of things, gained information hundred times more than what i was taught in school and college. I know about facts , I know reasons how stuff works, I am more confident than ever before. Having said that, like every thing else Internet also has dark side to it, which is off course spending more time on snapchat, FB,Instagram, Porn , etc and all of this is because we have smartphones that gives us freedom to go to these apps anytime and anywhere with utmost ease. All in all it boils down to our choices and preferences- I wont call myself addictive to youtube if I am watching videos like these or informative videos that are helping me grow, While if I use youtube to watch some Tv series, scandals, hollywood drama, etc then I am wasting my time. A Quality video on youtube with good information is just like reading a whole book in matter of 20-30 minutes with visuals that are easy to remember and grasp and vice versa

What I get from this is very interesting.. By getting more AWARENESS of the things we do, we'll eventually correct what we're doing 'wrong', which is essentially the same thing as listening to your inituition. That suttle voice inside, that tells you, that you should or shouldtn't do something. This combined with your logic and senses, like the example: "Smoking tastes bad" and then you could also think "It's not healthy for me or my environment". So there's that too. I think daily meditation and practice of mindfullness alone could therefore actually help people get out of addiction. Just a thought. Great video by the way! Really well researched and edited. Keep it up! Greeting from Denmark!

I just wanted to say that this could be the most relevant/significant video I have ever watched on the internet. I think I already knew that the amount of time I was wasting just browsing the net was an issue, but this video has given me greater insight into the behaviour. Im going to rewatch this a few times and see if I can make it a turning point. Thank you for this creating this and the other videos in your channel. Keep up the great work. SR

As a KZfaq junkie who has been addicted to different educational topics, I can say that I have finally read/listened to enough of the most important topics affecting people generally- whether it be health, geopolitical, technological etc. If I may be so bold, I dare anyone to post a comment below this post on an important general topic that they think I haven't researched at least a little bit, and I'll comment to say if I have or haven't.

5:47 What I learned, long before "the internet" was in common usage was you don't need dopamine to know that variable reward schedules produce more responses, that's been know since the 1930s. 9:30 Those symptoms might be alleviated by changing behaviors but can't always be alleviated solely by changing behaviors. You'll probably need to know about dopamine to understand why that is.

I'm convinced that too much 'surfing the net' does dull my creativity. Especially noticed this 'drop' if I am doing that sort of 'clicking about for the next wacky/interesting thing' for too long. Many times I sit down in a big creative state hoping something online is going to just add and inspire but instead.... 2 hours later I totally forgot what I was initially excited about inventing and that urge to do something artistic is all but totally depleted. Well, that's been my experience.

More Internet fear. People say the same thing about trolling on the Internet. It bothers you for the first year or so. Then you adapt to it, and it doesn't affect you anymore. The same is true of all of these distracting apps and websites. And I've heard similar critiques about video games. The truth is that people who were going to be productive are still going to be productive. And people who weren't would find some inferior to way to distract themselves (television, gossip, drinking, drugs) even if they didn't have the Internet.

Thats true but I he wasnt really blaming the internet he was saying "be mindful". He basically just talked about the general design of apps, websites etc and said "this might be the reason that you cant drop your phone or laptop". But still I think we should understand that this can affect even the best of us bc it is a type of addiction. Give it enough time to pull the Pavlov on you and dont have a big wish to go back and you are kinda stuck.

Totally agree with the final part of the vid. Its just self awareness really. Put the info on dopamine and the serotonin and the nootropics to one side. Information itself, showing people how much you know, becomes an addiction and a distraction. Not digesting it, and instead thinking about all the people you're going to tell. It always amazes me how much the psychological sciences seem to spend explaining that which was already obvious, if we'd only looked. Just see what happens when you do something, and ask why you do it. Does it make you happier in the long run? If no, try to change it. Pain will be the first thing you encounter, and its the pain that you were trying to escape from. The "why am I hurting" usually holds a lot more meaning for you than just pleasing graphs about brain chemicals. "If you're going through hell, keep on going. The only way out is through".

You did a good job at summarizing all the important points. I knew about this and began to avoid one pitfall after the other with social media, but evety now and then new ones come my way and it starts again. After I realized this i saw the Ted talk as well. It's good to know but still a little upsetting that most people are addicts for life but keep telling themselves they just didn't had enough luck, time or whatever in life to achieve their goals...

My mind is very different when I'm in the habit of compulsive internet browsing compared to spending almost no time online. It also happens when I do anything that involves a screen and a lot of information (so also watching tv or gaming), but less than when I'm mindlessly browsing. It's extremely hard for me to quit, seeing as how much I literally can't avoid the internet because I need it for doing work, checking mail, and more. Aside from that, I need my computer for stuff like making digital art, digitally composing music, game design, and learning about interesting things online. Moderation is probably the key, but it's extremely easy for me to go binge on it, it always feels like some kind of hyperfocus. The internet is also my default place to go to when I go through a lot of stress, since it numbs my emotions after a while. The problem is that I lose focus, become easily overstimulated, and lose motivation even for the things I care about.

Man, thank you. You're an angel. Back when I was studying to enter College, I just couldn't do it. I was always way too uninterested and couldn't concentrate. I had internet at that time. Turns out I moved to a new house, and my parents didn't bother contracting an ISP. Damn, those were the most productive and happy days in my life, I would say. All that after the initial despair of craving for internet had gone away, of course. I have the exactly same problem now, and the cause (now I realize) is also the same.

It's funny, because I've been thinking last weekend, that I look after my health and fitness. (that's the reason why I found this channel) but I don't pay enough attention to how much I stay infront of my laptop, mobile phone or the television. I was too long infront of the television, that I had really bad headache. It always happens when I'm more than three or four hours looking into a screen. That's why I decided to try to look no more than 2 hours into a screen. It's very hard. I'm obviously addicted, but knowing that my thoughts that this is not right, are right, helps me to try. Thanks

You are totally right. As a game developer, I thought about developing a program to stop people from being able to access sites like facebook, etc. The problem is if I develop this, it can't benefit me. Also social media is a big part of getting the word out for your game and the like. I would have to hire a PR person.
