What people that wanted more infected didn't realize is the subtle hints that when they do show up it's treated as a big deal. Every episode that featured the infected there is always casualties that came with it. How Henry was shocked that Joel & Ellie are still alive after Ellie mentions they encountered them. This isn't the Walking Dead or any other generic 'zombie' show where the hero's can easily mow dozens of them down without any trouble, in the Last of Us when even one shows up there is a struggle to stay alive. It generates more suspense then we don't see them every episode so when they do show up it's edge of the seat material.

By not showing the infected like in the game, you're making the world the show exists seem way more safe than it is in the game. The whole point is the culmination of their entire journey and Joel making the choice at the end. It's supposed to be a tough choice. By having infected in a handful of scenes, you're making the choice easier. They went from Boston to Kansas City seemingly without incident. The only danger they faced was from 2 groups of humans. The stakes in the show simply aren't that high as they are in the game.

Exactly. It means Joel saw their relationship, how happy they were, how it was possible to find meaning and love again in this horrible world. It shows that he could have that too if he found the right person. Not the same kind of love, obviously, but in his case it was the love of a parent and child. And he did find it again. @@extofer How nice of you to speak for all LGBT+ people. But the facts are he introduced gay characters only to have them killed off in the same episodes they're introduced in. That's literally Bury Your Gays, a trope that's fallen out of usage as more companies try to promote representation, partially due to the inclusion of LBGT+ persons taking part in focus groups. Worse yet: He changed the fate of a gay character specifically so they would be buried. But we do know he's no ally because behind-the-scene development reports of The Last of Us 2, which he was the primary lead on. The main character, Abby, was designed to be "trans friendly" but no trans person was consulted on this, it all came from what Neil Druckmann saw as "trans-friendly" traits. The result is a character who's a parody of trans traits, who stands in stark contrast to another in-game trans character who was designed with input from a trans VA and who is more in-line with the aesthetic of the game. It's literally the case of what a cis straight man sees trans people as vs how one trans person sees themselves. Best case scenario it's just something terfy, but given the context of the many other problematic behaviors he exhibits behind-the-scenes, he's about as much of an ally as Weinstein. It's all surface-level efforts meant to cover deep seated bigoted views.

I truly believe that the only problem with the show was that there needed to be more infected, and I've pinpointed why I believe there needed to be more, and 3 infected scenes from the game which I believe should have been included. 1. When the elevator Joel stands on breaks and he falls into the basement with all of the infected. It's the first time he and Ellie are separated and is great character building between them. It shows they can't make it on their own, and they are stronger together - they need each other to survive. Also develops Joel's trust with giving Ellie a gun. 2. When Ellie meets David and they have to face off against the hoarde together. It makes David seem like a potential father-figure replacement for Joel, considering we don't know if he'll live or die. It shows how much Ellie has grown and it makes David's turn that much more impactful. 3. The final faceoff with infected in the tunnel at Salt Lake City before they find the Fireflies. It's that final reminder of why it's so important they get Ellie to the Fireflies to find the cure. They didn't need a hoarde of infected in any of these scenes. 2-3 runners with Joel in the basement. Half a dozen with David (maybe one Clicker which David saves Ellie from). Maybe 4 in the tunnel. It didn't need to be crazy. Just something to drive home the danger. And the reason it was important to show more infected? To me the ending was less impactful without it. In the game you've spent hours upon hours battling these things, and so when Joel decides to save Ellie over humanity it drives home what a loss that was. But in the show they were barely even there enough to be a threat. When Joel saves Ellie it's like, well, do they even need a cure? They seem to be getting along fine without it. It just bugged me. The episodes were short enough that they could have squeezed in some extra infected scenes. The show was otherwise a near perfect adaptation, but I really felt the loss of the infected and I think they made the wrong choice there, personally
@oerthling

ad 1: Redundant ad 2: I see your point. Would have worked too, but wasn't needed. ad 3: Redundant and needlessly distracting. This is exactly the kind of thing that:s there for the game, but wouldn't have made the episode better. There was no need for another horde. We already knew that the show depicts humanity gradually going extinct. Throughout all their travels we not only see the world in ruins, but all that remains is barely holding on and running on stuff borrowed from the past. And the few bastions are falling one by one. No place is really expanding. They survive - for now - or fall. Even the nice commune town, while offering a better life for now, is fragile and 1 bad year away from getting wiped out by bad weather or infection. There was no doubt that the final episode had high stakes. We didn't need a zombie horde to remind us of that. At the end there were more Giraffes than humans in the city.

@@oerthlingman he's right, you can't have a series about infected monsters and have them to appear for like 20 minutes all together, seems like they focused too much on making half of the characters either badly written like Bill (he trusts a random guy in the apocalipse and proceed to have sex after 10 minutes) or make them black for some reason
@oerthling
@oerthling Жыл бұрын
@@leretard6936 The series IS NOT about the infected. The infected are the background for the story about Joel & Ellie. I thought that's obvious. The game has a greater emphasis on the infected because it's a game - you get something to fight. The series can focus more on the story.

While it would have been nice to see more zombies, not showing them can also work super well. Just look at Alien. In Alien, the xenomorph has about 4 minutes of screentime in a move that's 1hr and 57m long. And the xenomorph isn't revealed until like an hour into the movie (if I remember correctly). But despite that, the xenomorph is one of the most iconic movie monsters ever, most people would say that it's beyond just a movie monster. Not showing the xenomorph or the infected for long periods of time really builds up tension in the audience, so every time they do appear you get this dreadful feeling, and you genuinely worry about what'll happen to the protagonists. Sometimes if you have too much of the bad guy, then they can start to feel less imposing and threatening. Then again, I could see why having so little infected shown could be a negative for the final emotional payoff. There's definitely a fine line when it comes to how much bad guy you need to show.

@@oerthling those are your opinions and you are very welcome to them. I don't agree, but that's okay. I'm glad that for you, the show worked exactly as it was. I still loved the show, just felt that the threat of infection was underutilised. Though I will note that I did say a hoarde isn't necessary for any of those scenes. And I agree, we didn't need another hoarde. We had 2. I just felt that the threat was forgotten about, especially in later episodes. But that's my opinion, and you disagree, and that's cool 😊

As a huge fan of TLOU, I came in to the series expecting and hoping for it to be great. Knowing that Neil Druckmann was onboard and Craig Mazin was a fan of the game made me feel confident about it, especially with how terribly games have been adapted when the creators did not understand the source material. Also, the game naturally lends itself to a show format, I think most people (myself included) couldn't help but think to themselves when playing the game that this would make an amazing show. As the weeks went on and we saw more and more of the show, I was honestly blown away by how they not only met the bar of the game but surpassed it in some aspects, specifically in episodes 5 and 8 for me. I don't think I will ever be in love with the show as much as I am with the game though, but I think that can be boiled down to the fact that I experienced the story for the first time in the game, and unfortunately the experience will never be as perfect as your first time. My only real problem with the show is the finale, as you mentioned in the video. It was very well written and the emotions of the game were certainly there, but I 100% agree it was too short and so it made the pacing a bit off and the key character moments from the game needed more breathing room so it kinda soured the experience at first. However, the more I have let the show sink in, I have sorta forgiven the shorter run time as that small gripe won't make me be dissapointed in a show that has been otherwise fantastic in all other aspects and kept me excited and in awe every week. I hope they keep it up for the next season and I am super hyped for it. I know that Part 2 is quite controversial and it is surely flawed but one thing that I always thought about the game was that that specific story would actually work better in a TV format than in a game so it might even be better than the game. Overall, the show was phenomenal and I think it could go down as one of the best shows in recent memory.

While all the points you make contribute to making an excellent adaptation there are two aspects which are more important than all others: passion and respect. A passion for the source material, and respect for the original medium as an artform that can tell good stories. Scorsese could never make a good game adaptation because he doesn't respect the source medium. Craig Mazen played TLOU in 2013, he's a gamer, respects video games and he loved the game.

Everyone thinks they would heroically stay behind to blow the asteroid like Bruce Willis in Armaggeddon, but most likely we would freak out and do anything and everything to stay alive. And Werewolves Within is excellent, by the way, but I had zero idea it was an adaptation when I watched it last year. It was on several 'best horror movies of 2021' lists.

Ellie discovers that David had a gun on him the whole time making her feel like she maybe could trust him. Along with his help navigating the warehouse to escape. Which in turn made the reveal of who he was much more impact full as she felt like she could trust him. I'm not saying ep8 needed the horde of infected but maybe one is sneaking up behind ellie and David pulling his weapon to save her. I feel would've went a long way to make the reveal feel lot more heartdropping for the audience that didn't know the story.

As i already commented, my biggest beef with the show, besides the fact that it should have been 12 episodes at least, was the fact that they made this world feel way safer than it was in the game. The whole story is leading up to the decision Joel has to make at the end. Save one girl or potentially save the world. In the game u go through hell trying not to get killed by infected where in the show they appear in a handful of scenes. The only danger they face is from 2 different groups of people. I understand that in these shows the point is always that we're always the true monsters, but the decison Joel makes at the end is supposed to make the audience go "yeah thats tough, i can understand either way". But the shows lack of infected makes that decision so much easier. Why sacrifice the life of this girl, a girl who by the way is NOT the first they've tried this with and failed every time, if the world is seemingly pretty safe. If the main point of your story is a decision like that, the stakes have to be higher. We didnt see any reason why there needs to be a cure ASAP whereas in the game, every structure u entered u were on edge because there could be any number of infected in there. I think the show completely rushed through the story and made the world way more tame than it was in the game, which again lessens the gravity of Joels decision at the end. I enjoyed the show overall because i love the characters, but i think they shortchanged us in season 1 and knowing what comes in season 2, im even more depressed about it.

Like they have material already weve seen it in pt2. i wouldve liked to see more from marlenes pov in the hospital and the conversation she has with jerry where abby walks in. And i cant really understand why they didnt at least hint towards abby like they did with dina. Overall the series was amazing but the finale felt like it couldve done a little more. also bro jerrys reaction was so bad 😐"i wont let you take her"... like where is the emotion?

I enjoyed the show. I think they kept the focus on the relationships between the characters and not necessarily just on infected/zombies. I think that's where Walking Dead failed. There always had to be a horde or an attack. However, I think TLOU should have taken more time with the material. They almost rushed through the first game story which makes me worried that they'll put in filler and newly created characters just for episode sake.

I liked TLOU but was not blown away by it. If your gonna base a tv show on a game then they should have had more of the game elements in the show than they did. Apart from 1 episode, the infected, did not seem to be a huge threat. Craig Mazin was told of this criticism and said would take this onboard for season 2.

@mopnem

@@charissa6648 Yeah, I see what you’re saying. I think the episode was fan-fiction at best. Bill in the game arguably was meant to be non specific in his sexuality & they made the characters whole identity gay. Additionally, I think this undercuts ellies’ eventual reveal. & I don’t think they bonded much that episode, they were hardly even in it. Op said Joel started presenting conversations, no he didn’t, if anything he closed up a little because of the mention of Tess in the letter. It’s really not until they get to the brothers camp that you see their relationship take a leap, maybe during the Henry encounter..
@charissa6648
@charissa6648 Жыл бұрын
@Vvmopz Very well articulated, and I agree! You are right. That episode didn't truly add to the character bonding between Ellie and Joel! It didn't fit at all to me. They took vital screen time between Ellie & Joel and their growing relationship in order to prop up a secondary characters' love story. It was bizarre. If a letter from Bill was enough to begin changing Joel and not all the trauma and suffering they endured together, then that's just poor screen writing. Tess pleading will Joel as her life was about to end should have held more weight than a letter from a man that was, I cannot say friends, because they were more like acquaintances; seems like reaching? and an excuse to tie in a story that held very little significance to the main characters' development. Although it was slow; I believe Ellies flashback episode fit and made perfect sense. I know what they were trying to do, but it doesn't seem like they succeeded. You want to watch a great show that does this better than any show I have ever watched? Watch the Last Kingdom. This is one of the greatest shows in terms of writing I have ever watched. I do not say that lightly. They were able to succeed where The Last of Us couldn't in that avenue. The way they tie in the secondary characters into the character development of the main character is brilliant. If you watch, come back and talk to me, please. It is a masterpiece in adaptations, and I have never been so attached to so many characters aside from the main character. They also did the complicated villan well and hero well. That is what episode 3 reminded me of, they were trying to tie in these characters to reveal more about the main character and using their past to reveal motives. Noone did it like the Last Kingdom.

@@charissa6648 Interesting, I have a brother that keeps recommending that show. I’ll def have to check it out 👍 I think we agree that ep 3 was poorly executed on a whole. Not to mention, even if you feel in love with the characters they die within one episode?! xD So on ep. 3 they felt it was a good idea to stop the main story to essentially create & kill off two characters in 1 episode, who aren’t essential to the story..

Live Action takes more budget and is way more risky. The curse was was broken by Arcane and Edgerunners in terms of adaptation. TLOU was the first to "break" the curse to make it mainstream because it's on HBO. IMO it's a result of the times. Video Games has dramatically increased in popularity because of the pandemic and with Tech and nerd culture slowly being ""accepted"" as normal. So Producers finally saw money in them and put the correct amount of money and put effort in finding where that amount of money can go to
@iterationfackshet1990
@iterationfackshet1990 Жыл бұрын
Arcane isn’t an adaptation, it’s a story set inside the same universe and the same goes for edgerunners, but edgerunners is much closer to 2077 in a lot of ways than Arcane is to League. If they took Cyberpunk 2077’s story and adapted it to the anime then it’s an adaptation, but it’s a completely new story. That’s why Cyberpunk 2077 itself isn’t considered an adaptation of Cyberpunk 2020. Usually video game “adaptations” go the route of not actually adapting the story and making a completely new one. These aren’t adaptations. The closest you could probably compare is the recent Halo show which clearly adapted but altered the story of Halo in the worse way possible and it shows how easily a true adaptation can fail. Another example is the Witcher show which isn’t an adaption of the game but the books, yet it alters too much because the writers of the show thought the books were shit and that they could do better. To adapt a story to the medium of movies or television you need to alter it in some way or another. This is true of all media being adapted from books to games to even historical events. Something in the game that you control isn’t as engaging when you’re not controlling it, which is why most of the combat in TLOU was removed as it’s purely there for the entertainment of the player. Sometimes that means a story needs to be radically altered, like Bill and Frank’s as it simply doesn’t make sense to have us watch Joel go rampage through Bill’s town to get a truck, it serves in game mainly as filler and it’d be worse in the show as we aren’t controlling it. The only part that advances the plot in Bill’s town is the outcome of Bill and Frank’s relationship and Joel getting a truck and some weapons. Meanwhile the sniper scene at the end of suburbs isn’t meaningless, as not only is it where Sam gets but it also shows a change in Joel as he’s worried about Ellie, Sam and Henry’s safety which he hasn’t cared about anyone really for a while other than Tess. The same is true for the final combat scene in the hospital, as it shows the lengths Joel will now go through to protect Ellie. This is why the show is the near perfect adaptation, it changes what needs to be changed, makes changes that actually improve the story in both the show and the game and stays faithful to the story for the rest. Edgerunners and Arcane don’t need to worry about that, they’re stories that exist in the same universe but aren’t adapting any existing story. Halo adapted a story and radically changed it because they thought they could do better than the original. That’s why TLOU breaks the curse, because the writers and director weren’t egotistical idiots who thought they could do better but rather they actually cared for the source material and went to great lengths to adapt it to a different medium. The problem with video game adaptations more often than not is that video game adaptations are not looked at as forms of art like novels, movies and tv are but rather a mindless form of entertainment like your average summer blockbuster. Only when that mindset is wiped out can video games be much better adapted. If video games were adapted the same way most books are the video game curse simply wouldn’t have existed.

The bill and Frank episode did more for the audience than it did for Joel and Ellie. After watching it a few times i realized just that. The show was a good game adaptation however when it comes to a show in itself, it was lacking. Some creative choices to change the original source material landed such as the Bill and Frank episode, and the Henry and Sam episode. However, the David episode should've been a two parter, Joel should've stopped her Ellie from continuing to brutalize Davids's corpse or even another episode before Joel and Ellie end up in Jackson. They definitely toned down the violence in the show, many deaths where partially on screen. That being said I'm not asking for a bloodbath or torture porn, just when it calls for it, have at it. The gameplay portion with David served as a buffer for Ellie to attempt to be comfortable or entertain the thought of being David as she doesn't really know if Joel is going to make it. But there was always an underlying vibe from David that Ellie has not trust him, and she is later rewarded and traumatized for being right. The finale did add some context to Marleys connection to Ellie, it successfully showcased game Joel, or the Joel Pedro once was but could only summon when Ellies life is truly on the line. That being said in the last time Joel saw Ellie she partially drowned, he doesn't know if Shes alive and then when he comes to he finds out not only is she alive but the Fireflies are going to kill her. Same end result but the building blocks that lead up to his massacre are very different. All in all even if i wasn't a big fan of the game, this show is far from a masterpiece but did a hell of job bringing these characters to the screen.

The other reason for the lack of spores is simple - we want to see the actor's faces. Why do you think actors constantly don't wear hats or remove helmets at times that make no sense (looking at you Sicario tunnel scene)? - we rely so much on facial expressions to get emotions - covering with a mask would prevent that. Why does Joel not wear a damn hat in freezing conditions? Same story, being able to see the actor's face. I worked for nearly two decades at HBO & my take on the shorter run times late in the season is simple, budget - they spent a LOT of $ up front on world-building and big set pieces with large casts of extras - which is expensive. The post production CGI was going to cost a ton, so the compromise was fewer episodes and shorter episodes late in the run - my best guess from years on the corporate side of TV production.

Bill was much better in the game. Instead of showing him being gay the game showed Bill lonely and in pain. Relationships hurt too much. Ellie as well was more full of life and not just a smart ass who can say no wrong instead in the game she is able to call shit out for what it is and she sees the Beauty of what is left in this cruel world. Ellie and Bill are some examples of why the game did better. Joel was more emotional in the show than the game and this makes no sense. Constantly throughout the game Joel is purposely trying to cut out emotion and attachments. He knows that to survive in this world means being alone because like Bill relationships hurt too much when you can experience loss. It was Ellie and all the beauty she could see and feel. Ellie was just a smart ass in the show. Also Ellie looks nothing like her game counterpart.

As a non-game player I can tell you, had all the stuff happened in the show that happened in the game I'd have turned it off in the first episode. There's a reason I came to it and that was the pedigree of Craig Mazin. While I appreciate Neil Druckmann's creativeness to bring the story and characters to light, he needed a Mazin to fine tune it to the point it is all about the humanity of the people, not the infected and a tons of gunplay. Considering all the shooting incidents that go on in the real world, the last thing I want to see is a crap load of people being mowed down and more zombie crap. The ending with Joel going through the Fireflies like he did to get him to Ellie was understandable because of that groundwork laid down with his grief after Sarah. As for any of the characters in the game being in any way better than in the show....not so. The characters in the game are caricatures of real life people. There is a reason Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson, and the rest other than Merle Dandridge return, is because with Pedro and Bella you get that same pedigree as in Mazin's great storytelling with Chernobyl. And I think the reason characters like David in the show are so great is because there are people like that in real life. Same with Joel and Ellie.

Meanwhile other countries like Japan for example are doing a pretty good job overall. Keep in mind that not everything translates well into live action & not every game has a narratively driven story like the Tlou. While lots of people where frustrated with things like Hitman, Assassins creed & even Mk 2021, I was enjoying myself with ones like Ace attorney 2012, Detention 2019, Werewolves within, Gangs of London, Gungrave, Fate (0 & Unlimited blade works), Dmc, Street fighter 2 1994, Sf2V etc. Tlou is amazing but I like other ones alot more. Thank God they turned David into an evil religious zealot, I've NEVER seen that exact thing before. And what great writing that David sees Ellie as a killer despite the fact he's only ever seen that she's killed a deer because they actually cut out this one section, I don't know if you know it, but David learns what Ellie's capable of through fighting a bunch of infected, it's actually really cool. But no, that was "just a set piece" that had absolutely no purpose or deeper character motivation behind it. It's not like one of the best moments is David pulling out a pistol that he had the whole time and shooting a clicker that allowed him to gain Ellie's trust and show we actually didn't want to hurt her. That moment is clearly unnecessary, but even though it's unnecessary, we'll have a line where show David says Ellie has a "violent heart" even though he knows nothing about her and has never seen her in combat. What a great choice to cut, really. And of course, now instead of the terrifying but interpretable line "You think you know me? You have no idea what I'm capable of." We get, essentially, "blah, I'm the rape guy! I I'm going to rape you in a burning building because I'm evil 😈" I'm sorry, but the idea that the shows David or that whole winter section is better than the game is deranged. The game, ironically enough, had subtlety. Sure, did 3 billion infected come out of nowhere? Well, eh, even in the game you can explain it by it being a lumber mill which would have had workers, but whatever. Even still, game David didn't need more depth because the mystery was part of what made him terrifying. When he mocks Ellie in the game as he chokes her, it lands because I really didn't know what he was capable of. Show David, what, he can slap a little girl for talking out of line? Oh, shiver me timbers. At least when the whole town was a bunch of murdering fucking psychos who ate people in the game, it made the fact that they all respected David way more terrifying

Episode 3 was not pointless filler, but it did have a couple of scene that made it a little cringe. Like when Ron (I always forget who is Frank and who is Bill so...Ron Swanson) stands out in the middle of the street to fight off the guys trying to take over the town. That is so dumb. I mean, even someone with no tactical experience would know not to do that. But overall, the message of the episode is good. I think the point is it would have work just as well with a heterosexual couple. The fact that they were gay didn't define them. It didn't try to push that message. It was just a damn good story that happened to involve a gay couple. Honestly fix that one scene and the episode goes from really good to great.
