I can’t imagine what it would be like to pour thousands of hours of research and development of an absolute masterpiece of a series that kick-started an entire genre, and then have it turn into THIS on the big screen. I would have sued the heck out of Fox, and I’m surprised Rick didn’t. Still, it’s not as bad as the Eragon movie, which put an end to the ENTIRE movie franchise, even though there were three books left. At least we got a second movie for Percy Jackson
@betka5791

Yeah I’m not forced to like it since Rick himself hated it. This missed more than Goblet of Fire in the Harry Potter series. Like half the time I was like “is this really a Percy Jackson movie? If they ever do the rest of the movies or heroes of Olympus or trials of Apollo or Kane chronicles or magnus chase or any of the others, I hope it’s nothing like this. Theres probably like 5 other series that I can’t remember that I read.

@@betka5791 The movie is so messed up. I can’t even begin to express my shock at the fact that they went so far as to make them 16 instead of 11/12. Chris Columbus had already directed the first two Harry Potter movies, which proved he was good at working with child actors, but he tear they turned it into an overs*xualised monstrosity. I’m literally a teenager and I cringe whenever I watch the movie just because Perch and Annabeth’s relationship is purely based on infatuation, and Grover is h*rny (I don’t mean as in horns, I mean…well, you probably understand)

Fun story: I was a HUGE Percy Jackson fan when the movie came out (it was my favorite series, and I read the books everyday), and begged my dad to take me the day it came out. He looked into it, and the nearby movie theater was doing a huge release party, with an after party in the lobby after the show let out. We were so excited and bought three tickets. I was so pumped, in fact, that I hadn't watched any trailers or listened to any talk about the movie. I wanted to go in completely blind. The only thing I knew was that Annabeth was no longer blonde, which was devastating, but an oversight I was willing to overlook if she was otherwise perfect. We were the only three people in the theater. The workers were really apologetic, because the tickets cost extra as it came with the after party. They gave us all free popcorn and soda and told us we could be as loud as we wanted, since there was no one else to disturb in the theater. When the movie started, I cried. I was so heartbroken that I couldn't even recognize the story, and so angry that they had butchered characters I loved so much to the point that they were unrecognizable. I was alternating between sobbing and angrily explaining to my sister that this wasn't Percy Jackson, Percy Jackson was so much better. When we left, the theater employees saw me crying and gave us an ENTIRE sheet cake that they had bought for the after party. It was supposed to feed 50 people, and they gave it to my little family of three. We took it home, ate cake, and my dad read the first chapter to us. On retrospect, a story about a sobbing child isn't really "fun", but I do actually really love this story now and think it's really funny. It is, to this day, the only good thing I can say about the Percy Jackson movie. It made me cry so hard, I got free cake.

I’ve noticed that a lot of studios adapting books into movies have pretty much just been taking the story’s characters and twisting the plot up into an almost completely different story, and fans haven’t been happy about that, and yet they keep doing it. When are they gonna realize that if they want a movie to be successful they need to remain faithful to the source material. Yes I get artistic liberties are part of adapting a story to screen and/or stage, but you can do that and still be faithful to the story, they were able to do that with Harry Potter and some other movie adaptations I’ve seen, though I think that’s because the author or whosever story it was (like a Broadway show movie adaptation) they were involved in the making of the movie.

Well with harry potter one of JK’s conditions for making the films was that she got to be involved in a big way and have a say in major decisions. And the filmmakers respected that and had passion for the books. Clearly Fox didn’t have the same respect for Riordan and PJ :( But I definetely agree with u - when you’re making an adaption, the target audience is obviosly going to be the ppl who read the source material, so why would u change the story this much? That’s just so stupid.

For everyone kinda doubting the new Disney+ adaptation: Disney+ handled the adaptation of the book series "The Mysterious Benedict Society" (TMBS) which is my favorite children's book series apart from Harry Potter and A Series of Unfortunate Events. The tv show adaptation was really good, and the changes were actually done for the better of the TMBS universe. Sure there were imperfections, but the adaptation was really solid and faithful, showing lots of easter eggs and book references! Plus, James Bobin, the person who directed TMBS' pilot episode, will direct Percy Jackson's pilot episode! Bobin did a great job on TMBS so I'm sure he'll do the same for the PJO series. And if you're still not convinced, Rick Riordan himself is very involved with this new PJO adaptation, and from what I know, will be an executive producer and overall screenwriter for the series. So excited

Honestly that's why I haven't started marketing my book yet. A lot of people say you should start marketing Before release so you have a dedicated audience on launch, but I'm just so afraid people will take the vague appearances and descriptions, turn them completely on their heads, and ruin what I've created before I've even shared. After publishing I could tolerate some liberties, because even if things go way out of hand like what happened to Rick, being able to point back to the published source material and say "you're wrong" keeps the control more (or less) in my hands. I hope people are really respectful of your creations when you get published, and that genuine fans will have your back if someone gets out of line!

Man, the only good thing the movie did is that it opened the world of reading to me. It went like this. When I was in grade 6, my dad downloaded the movie and had me watch it. I did and I love it since I am into Greek stuff. It then became one of my favorite movies. In grade 7, I told a classmate about the movie. One of the bullies heard me and said that I was committing a heresy. He then told me the movie sucked. He then let me borrow The Lightning Thief, I think the cover was the Minotaur. Anyway, I read it and realized how disrespectful the movie was. Then I discovered the book is part of the series. I got hooked. So that's how I got into reading.

I’m still a new fan when it comes to the Rick Riordan books series, I only just started reading his books last year and boy am I happy I have. He has quickly become one of my favorite authors and I’m currently reading his Magnus Chase series (which I love so far). I had heard a lot about the Percy Jackson series but only because of the movie and at the time I was young and unaware of the mistakes adaption from book to movie could be. I first watch the movies around the time they came out but I had no clue what the books were about. And I’m not proud to say that I did like the movie, at least the first one more then the second. But it wasn’t an all time favorite for me. But I did hear people bashing at the movies form the book series and I can totally understand now. After reading the books I completely understand the complete destruction the studio has done and it’s completely unprofessional. This also just goes to show, not only does the studio suffers but so does the book serious. People like me, could see the movie and think that the books are complete crap and have no clue they are just being misleaded. Same can be said for the parents that take their kids to see the movie and think this is absolutely garbage or something their kids should never see, let alone read. Honestly I do wish I knew what was going through their heads because Rick warned them time and time again and yet they just decide to ignore the author of the book series that they are making a movie after? What kind of logic is that? Either way the movies will get no more support from me and I’m definitely excited tho a tad scared for these in process movies. I do hope they can give us what we never received in the other movies and truly wish Rick can finally show what he wanted his fans to see on screen

I only recently started reading the book having seen the movie last month. I'd recorded the movie and had to watch it in two sittings because I thought the movie was poorly written. I'd wanted to give it a chance, which is why I gave it another go to watch the rest of it. It was just short of ok. I decided to read the book because it's been sitting on my shelf with several other used books I bought a while ago. So far, I've only gotten to the part where Percy and his mother are at the beach cottage when Grover shows up, and Percy's mother asks him what happened at school that he didn't tell her about. I can definitely tell the book is way better and different than the movie I saw. Thanks for doing this video! I look forward to reading more!

When I saw that a video about the Disney series had been released I was so scared that it was that it wasn't going to happen, but when I saw Rick and he was smiling, I knew. When I finally got to hear that a green light had been given and that the director of the pilot would be someone who actually knew about the story and who's children are fans, I just felt a sigh of relief. I believe they are in good hands this time. I wish we could see the show now, but I will sit and wait for it to come out and I will probably be the person checking everyday on Disney+ when it gets closer to release date. We will most likely have to wait until at earliest December this year or like January next year. I don't really care how long I will have to wait, I just want it to be as good as they can get it. At least those films have effort and tried to be faithful to the books, and can be enjoyed separate from the books. @Visiorex
@Visiorex 4 ай бұрын
The Harry Potter films are indeed good films if you forget the books entirely. They tell a compelling and complete story, and the acting and screenplay are competent, if not outright excellent. The issue I have is that they completely miss some key pieces of character development early on (since they suffer from being made prior to the series even being finished) and the movies don't hold the weight of consequence of showing magic to muggles in favor of a more cinematic experience (I'm looking at you, OOTP - why you gotta have Harry flying directly through London?). It really is a shame that the full weight of the books is not properly represented. The plot is changed in ways that make it far less satisfying, and the general book personality of the main characters is muted in favor of sitting closer to movie stereotypes. The movie format does not give the story enough room to breathe, which is why the scene where Voldemort becomes confetti at the end of the series is such a bummer. It doesn't communicate the thing Rowling was communicating in the books all along - Voldemort is just a mortal, like everyone else. Sure, movies might be better with a cinematic ending, but I feel like the flash forward *was* that cinematic ending. Emotional and charming and one of the things that (aside from questionable makeup) the movies did right. Rowling was involved in the movies, but it shows that she didn't quite have the series and its direction on lock when they were being made. The books provide a far more emotional venture into Harry's experience, and the movies don't provide any additional input into the world of Harry Potter. They do not fix the books' flaws, they do not correct the plot for inconsistency, and they certainly do not consistently adapt information that was only narration in the book into a natural, plot enhancing element in the movies. The series coming out on Max theoretically has the space and time to improve on Harry Potter and breathe new life into it. The issue they will face is that Rowling will be involved, and I'm not certain how keen she is on allowing the writers the flexibility to fix errant plot holes in her books. I just hope they cast the right kids and the right adults and don't make a mess of Rowling's already messy (but brilliant) books. Sure, they're magical, but there are a lot of holes you can fall into when adapting the material for a different medium. You have to be knowledgeable and crafty when it comes to Harry Potter. Imagine missing the key features of why Winky was included in the fourth book. Or imagine finding the wrong balance on how to integrate Peeves into the TV series. Shows work off different beats than books, so copying the frequency of Peeves' appearances in the book would not be appropriate for the comedic beats required in a kids' fantasy show. It's difficult to do. You not only have to be knowledgeable on what makes a good TV show, but also knowledgeable on what from the Harry Potter books will lend themselves to serving those purposes, while not losing sight of what made the series magical in the first place. Thanks for reading this long rant. I've been reflecting a lot recently on what generally makes a good adaptation of a book series into a TV series. I hope my points are well formed and intelligible. Bottom line is that the TV show must sit on the mechanics and devices that make a TV series good, while still treating the intent of the source material with respect. Correct what must be corrected to fit, and when in doubt, do not fix what isn't broken.

I was so excited to see Annabeth on screen! I couldn’t wait to see how the writers would cast her and bring her to life. And then they chose someone who wasn’t even blonde!! I’m sure that seems like a small detail to be upset about when there are of course bigger issues that was done to this film but Annabeth not being blonde aggravated me so much

Unlike others, I read the graphic novel before the books and the movies and after watching the movies I felt something was missing. They really missed the opportunity to create a lively cinematic universe and instead create a lame and lazy adaptation. Hopefully the tv show will give the book series the adaptation it needs

I didn’t like the way the graphic novel ended, but in hindsight, it made sense with how Luke gets characterized later on. There was no reason for a lot of the other cuts and I genuinely had no idea that they were still intended to be twelve until my third reread because of the art tho

I'm Glad Rick is happy for this he deserves to have a good Percy Jackson series and when it's Disney you know it's gonna be good he even said that the director of the Pilot has read the books and knows what he is doing he even said that the Pilot Director's kids are fans of the books and that he directed the first episode of the mysterious benedict society which he loved I hope this will be good and I hope you make a review video for the series are you gonna make more Percy Jackson and heroes of Olympus videos along with the trails of Apollo and other books that are connected to the Percy Jackson series ?

I started reading the series before I knew there were movies, and about halfway through HOO I learned of their existence. My friend who told me about them started summarizing the movies and I told her I wouldn’t be watching them halfway through the summary. If she hadn’t told me the title of the movie I would never have guessed they were even on the same series. I still haven’t watched them to this day, and I don’t regret it, especially after seeing how the fanbase reacted to them. I am a very visual person, and I would hate to say that they ruined my perception of the series. I am happy to say I have never watched them, and never will :) Thanks, but no thanks.

Rick Riordan actually co-wrote season one of the Disney+ Show, and I can only assume he was okay with them changing Annabeth's race. I hope that when I see it, at least the actress will act like Annabeth.

I am only finding out about this (his letters and pleas) now and this is just heartbreaking. His desperation is so strong that I can feel it raw even with you as the mediator, YEARS AFTER. To have the ORIGINAL CREATOR, the author of the story they wanted to produce points out how awful of a job they were doing, how did they not have felt embarrassed at all?

As someone who was a teenager when I first got into the Percy Jackson books, I was not thrilled by the fact that the books and movies didn't correlate to each other all that much. I especially didn't like many of the sexual innuendos made, mostly by Grover and Persephone, throughout the movie as a whole. Rick never made a single sex joke in any of his books, let alone swear (which is another turn off of mine to the movies). He never needed to. It wasn't important. Granted, satyrs in myths were known to always, 24/7, be sexually aroused, but introducing it in a movie based on a book that, much like Harry Potter, grew with its audience? Not a good call, at least in my book. They did the characters so dirty in the movies, which is why I personally like the musical better. They followed the first book's story so much better and stuck with the plotline. I do look forward to seeing how the show goes though as I'm hoping that it'll bring back much nostalgia for myself. We don't know much about the series yet, but I kind of hope it's animated and they hire the people from the musical who played Grover, Annabeth and Percy to voice them. I think that would do so much better as when I heard those voices as opposed to the voices of the actors from the movie, I was so floored because while reading the books, it sounded like the voices I would imagine them having in my head. They felt so real. Also, with an animated series, you could spend all the time you need to make a longer story and not only cover all five books but the Heroes of Olympus books as well without all the props and permission for places to shoot at. Again though, that's just me.

I LOVE the percy jackson books and when I put the movie in i was so excited, until I started watching it. I was pissed. I saw loads of my own struggles with my own ADHD in Percy and even struggled to sit and read the books even though i loved it and struggled through all of his books because I loved to read about a character i could relate to in their struggles. I read the books in 6th grade and it gave me a life long love of reading even though it is hard for me to do. Hope they can do it right this time

This video consistently reminds me how much Uncle Rick cares for his audience. He could have easily ignored the whole swearing element of the script and how the movie was targeted towards teens. He could have just focused on the changes between the book and the movie. But he said, “Make sure you don’t alienate your core audience.” We are so lucky to have such a great author in our generation.
