Scott is a fantastic no bullshit KZfaqr and photographer. He shares what he knows freely, and he also lets you know when he’s sharing his own random opinion, whether it makes sense or not.

Awesome video! Don’t know how this missed me when you dropped it, but great interview. I’ve been following Scott’s Tin House since the pandemic. Such no bs, excellent advice. Lots of tidbits in this interview worth writing down just to remind yourself how to better optimize your time. Cheers Lucy

What an interesting glimpse into the world of a professional photographer. I picked up the habit of time regimentation in the army and it’s nice to have everything completely planned out.

The main thing I don't think scott realizes is that most photographers work for like 200-300 euros for a shoot. Because there are plenty of other photographers around that charge around that and they deliver great work. Mind you I am talking about portrait photography where most people have about that 200-300 to spend. They need their other money to buy food and bills and so on. Scott seems to think photographers earn thousands per shoot but that's just not the case, the clients don't exist. That privilege is restricted to like 2-5 photographers in a entire country if that. It would be nice if either of you could get into why there is such a massive difference between what you think people pay for portraits and how little money people actually have to spend on portraits

Thanks for sharing your thoughts here and for watching. I think it’s just a reality that some fields of photography just don’t have as much money in them as others. That’s not really something you can control. Portraits like you say is a single person forking out their money for a service so…yeah they aren’t gonna pay you thousands and thousands unless it’s a wedding or they are a celebrity. Scott made it pretty clear that it’s the bigger brands that have the money and budget to pay the big bucks and that’s because they are using that photography to make more money I.e sell their product through advertising. Whereas the everyday person isn’t… Scott opened my eyes in this interview with his statement about restaurant photography. I’m never going to get a 10k restaurant photo shoot job because it’s just not there…I may however get a 10k job shooting a campaign for a fashion brand as they have more money to spend on advertising etc. and that industry lends itself to photography and relies on it more to sell and push their products and brand awareness. If you continue shooting portraits then I guess you have to think do you want to grind it out in the hamster wheel doing many jobs for that amount of money or do you want to pivot and aim for something higher ticket so you are able to work less, or even mix the two together perhaps? I’m still learning as a professional so I find it interesting to hear others experiences. Thank you 🙏🏻

@@LucyLumen Yeah i think so , its only like the top 5 photographers in a country that get to shoot celebs that might have a bit more to spend on it. And weddings they take like 15 hours or more and often involve hundreds of images so its normal they cost the client a few thousand including a decent album. But ye 99% of portraits are made for a few hundred. I do think i will stick with doing what i love, making portraits. I have no desire to try and work for brands because of my experience with them. I have stopped trying to get into the fashion industry or fashion portraits (i did that for a while) because if you google "Why I Quit Fashion - Rachel Rebibo" and read that article you will understand why. And from my own experience with working for clothing brands (often without me knowing), they will most often just gives clothes to popular models and they try and get photographers to shoot with them for free in those clothes. and all those models get for it is some free clothes. There is no money in that at most some exposure but that does not pay any bills.

I think you're precisely wrong. Scott's whole point is that you have to be realistic about what areas of work exist for a professional photographer (as opposed to the photographer arbitrarily deciding what type of work they want to do and expecting people to line up to pay them for it) and also understanding what type of budget different business types will generally be working with. He goes so far as to state that 99.9% of professional photographers don't have an agent and that this will prevent them from getting highly paid jobs. Not sure how you managed to get this perspective from the video 😂

there is to much gate keeping and elitism in this industry and is not really worth the time and effort to get in to it. Most of the time it is not what you know but who you know and that is a big problem. I think I will stick with my Film photography and make art for me, my friends and family.

I love this dude and his transparency but working with brands like McDonalds and process food junk pushers for me is morally bankrupt. I'd rather not work with those types of clients.
