The parking brake on your vehicle plays a vital role. Not only does it keep your vehicle from moving, it also relives your transmission and the rest of your drivetrain from holding the entire weight of the vehicle on its own. It is a key safety element, and maintenance on it should not be ignored.
As the miles and years pass by, the tensioning cable for the parking brake can loosen up, resulting in a parking brake that doesn't do the one thing it's designed to do. Rather than immediately taking it to a shop to have everything replaced, try adjusting things instead to tighten it back up.

FYI; this is a VERY GOOD VIDEO. Thank you for following SAFETY procedures, like chocking the wheels. Lot of people watch KZfaq videos and end up with disaster because they didn't follow basic common sense.

I certainly agree with you as many have been severely hurt or killed from being crushed by vehicle or even near me a semi trailer slipping off the jack. I always slide wheel under the frame so truck can't fall very far. Usually place a 2X4 on top of tire.

Two things: 1. I'm pretty certain you can buy very simple rebuild kits for these. Perhaps replacing it would allow the auto-adjust to work again and you wouldn't have to keep doing this every so often. 2. Another reason for looking into a rebuild kit... I'm pretty sure you're missing a bracket that bolts on up near the top of the brake pad "ring" and helps to hold it in place up there. Perhaps this additional free play is keeping the auto-adjust feature from working properly. The kit includes this upper clip as well. Good video though. Thanks.

I really thankful for this video as I don't know if my new to me '04, Z71, Burb, E brakes work. I learned long ago not to use E brake until after checking at home as you did. Not fun stomping on E brake at the boat ramp and find out they won't release. Excellent video as usual, Thanks.

Oh, cool. This will come very handy doing the adjustment on my '02 LS-trim Burb, especially it's stuck with me in Poland, haha!

Im having nothing but issues. I have a similar set up. 03 Hummer. Changed the parking brake shoes and cables. Adjusted the shoes to the parking rotor "hat" so it barely drags.. Then go inside the truck step on the emergency brake pedal and it BARELY works. This is even after I put new cables (which i thought was necessary) Im at a loss.. My parking brake BARELY works but it wont hold for shit. THoughts??

What do you do if the drum brakes on the rear of a 2003 Chevy Malibu are locked up? Loosen up each individual wheel with the star gear, or is there an emergency cable adjustment?

Why not take the caliper and bracket off as a whole?

Why not adjust it from behind the backing plate using the access hole provided to do this without taking the wheel off?

I know what you are talking about, but sadly GM in their infinite wisdom did not equip these trucks with the rear access. I have a 2000 chevy Tahoe and I wish I had it. Not sure about the later years but I know his and mines are identical and there is no access hole for adjustment.

@@bradleyheitz9210that’s only on the rear drum trucks. The disc brake ones you have to do this method.

You can also replace the emergency brake shoes!

yes you can, and you you'll still need to adjust them to make sure they function properly.

@@user-kc2ul2rh8b all depends how much you use them and under what conditions. Are you parking on a steep grade or a fairly level surface. How often do you use your parking brake? Is it adjusted properly so the shoe pad isn't being worn down while driving?

Whats your tire and wheel setup rim/tire size and is it stock height

33x12.50's on 18x9's with -12 offset, leveled 2" up front

There not auto adjust they should be adjusted when needed or when servicing rear brakes

Next time take your screwdriver stick it in the side of the caliper compress the caliper a little bit and I'm both the brake caliper bracket with caliper all as one

Test it with the parking brake lever before putting anything back together

148 ft-lbs that's about 3 ugga duggas no torque wrench required.

Pretty sure there's an adjustment window on the inside of that backplate which allows the parking brake to be adjusted without taking _anything_ apart, sooooooo.......dipshit alert!!!
