U-Haul Meets Harbor Freight. Today I show you how I add a winch to a U-Haul Car Trailer for any non-running vehicle. I couldn't find this answer on KZfaq, so I'd figure I'd share how I do it.

Share the video out. I'm trying to get it out there. Save on tow trucks and load a car by yourself. It's not for a one time purpose though. Gotta make sense to buy everything.

The winch is mounted backward, causing the line to run over the top of the drum and make a sharp bend to exit the fairlead... it's supposed to run under the drum and out the fairlead, so it is a direct pull with no crazy bend in the line before exiting the fairlead. Spin the winch 180° on the mount so the line spools off the bottom of the drum.

Just the video I have been looking for. My first time winching!. Bought a 2000 harbor freight badland marine winch. Mainly because it has both hand and electric crank ability. I funny I bought the same hitch extender also. The winch comes with a hitch ball quick connect. Using a UHAUL to pick up a 69 Buick GS. Thanks

That's pretty smart. This way you don't have to worry about someone stealing the winch too, just take it off and put it inside.

You need a winch, winch mount for the winch, battery for the winch and the dual hitch. I needed the terminals for my car battery and the hitch pins for the mounts. I have my own trailer now, but this was just a temporary thing til i could afford my own trailer. I already knew i would need a winch for when i bought a car trailer. This way is worth it, if you will tow several times. Not worth it, if only doing once.

Great Stuff Brother those moments where an old piece of carpet or a a floor mat over a sharp edge will save a rope or a strap nice thing is you can upgrade that rope in that wench any time and it is safer in my mind then a cable wench when it breaks but you do not want to be the target of either one breaking.... Imma grab the 12k lb winch on Black Friday. I think imma make a set of battery cables with a quick disconnect and a quick disconnect on the winch. Easy peezy Lemon squeezy!! Thanks again fammo! that's how it came out the box. i have to switch lines anyway. Nobody ever showed how to do it, so figure id show a simpler way.

Here is the problem i have with this. That hitch extender you have there puts a lot of leverage on your hitch and vehicles frame. Increasing load on it. And decreasing your maximum pulling load by 50%.

I’ve heard that part as well. I’ve used it several times going about 200 miles away. Hoping they make a shorter version under 12”. It does the job of winching a vehicle by yourself.

@@CatlocosGarage yea i like your idea. My thought is cant you use it as a winch.. but anchor the car trailer in place with a jack after and swap back to a short hitch n ball ? Im looking on hetting a 76 Jeep J10 pickup 8ft bed truck.. and im using my 90 Grand Wagoneer to pull it. Oddly its rated onky 5000 lbs. But the Jeeps with the 401 engines were rated 7500lbs. Not TOO much if a diff from a 360 and 401 besides maybe 60hp. So i think my Jeep will be ok towing a uhaul trailer eith a 4200 lbs truck. Itll be about 6400 lbs total. If its got a 7500lbs rating with trailer brakes on a 401.. then i think with my 360 if i jist watch the engine temps. And drive at 50-55 or under ill be ok My Jeep with me weighs 5200 lbs.. but its wheel base is like i think 109 or 119 inchs i forgot. So its not a HUGE vehicle like todays trucks. Drum rear. Disk front.. has a tow package.. so i have a class 3/4 hitch and trans cooler.. snd its well maintained by me.. all new ball joints. U joints.. everything runs good. Itll be a 140 mile treck. I dunno what do you think ? I gatta test my brake lighting wiring though lol it came eith electric brake controller. But i dunno if the wiring is still sending power bsck there ir nit. I know the uhaul just need a 5 pin adapter for lights and thats it

@@jeepsblackpowderandlights4305 Definitely safer unhooking and putting a short ball after winching. These U-Haul trailer tells you stay at 55 mph or they sway like a mother and risk flipping. These trailers are intended for city use, but everybody takes them on the highway. This was a temp solution for short distances. The problem is nobody has made a solution to this issue. I jumped on this one when I saw it at HF. I knew what I was gonna use it for. Anything from HF is risky, but we know when we shop there. Their quality has improved drastically lately though.

@@CatlocosGarage hinestly ppl shit on harbor freight but most of my tools are frim there.. my 90amp flux welder ive had for 6 years.. done floors. Frame rails.. exhaust pipes..you name it.. hasnt died yet. Drills and other tools i still use from em.. thr only thing ive broken are breaker bars and stuff

Thanks bro. This was my biggest pet peeve with trailer rentals. They didn't add a place to add a winch for non-running vehicles and nobody on KZfaq showed this idea.

The Harbor Freight dual hitch extender has a weight limit of 4000 lbs. I wouldn't tow a trailer with it. I would use it to load a vehicle.

You want the rope coming off the bottom of the drum and out the fairlead. Not peeling off the top and having to do a crazy bend at the fairlead. Your rope will last longer too..

It's a chinese winch. notice the In and Out works as designed. if i swapped then it'd be backwards.

This is a great idea but on the u-haul trailer I rented today the plastic latch on the ball was too high for me to be able to insert the winch carrier into the extender. I noticed the trailer I rented had a different winder than the one in this video, so there must be different models out there. If the extender was 0.5" taller it probably would have worked.

Interesting I've only seen one kind of trailer and I've rented numerous trailers over the yrs. It's possible. It also depends on your 2" ball.

Fasho. Just depends how often you're gonna need this setup. Initial investment but cheaper than buying a trailer and winch. I plan on getting a trailer eventually and I have a lot of cars.
