In this video, I show you how to add non-destructive cutouts to your 3d models in Blender 2.9 without using any addons.
Cutouts are a good way to add detail to 3d models, and are frequently used in hard surface modeling and industrial designs.
In this quick beginner-level tutorial, I follow a non destructive 3d modelling workflow, which retains the geometry of the core 3d model and adds levels of detail using modifiers. In Blender 3D, these modifiers are primarily: array, boolean, solidify, bevel, subdivision and lattice. In this tutorial, I use the boolean modifier to create the cutout, and use the bevel modifier to give out model a better appearance.
I'm planning to make more of these quick "coffee-break" tutorials where I explain fundamental concepts in simple terms. If you have any requests or suggestions, let me know in comments.

Awesome! Exactly what I needed to add a little cut-in details for my current project! Tip for anyone finding this video: In the boolean modifier if you change "Materials" to Transfer, the material of the cutter will be applied where it cuts. If you set the cutter to an emission material, you get a glowing circuit effect. Remember in EEVEE to enable Bloom, or in Cycles add a Glare Node set to Fog in compositing (if you want a bloom effect that is).

I know this video is two years old but, thank you for the video! It's helped me out tremendously, I'm an aspiring 3D-modeler in the works and I can say this tutorial has shown me the ropes of adding cut-outs and further understanding what modifiers can and cannot do. Thank you for this, you earned my sub. Most tutorials on KZfaq don't show you even what anything means half-the-time, in this video you explain with fastidious denotes, straight to the point I must say. Rather than just speed running a short video without explaining anything whatsoever like, "were just going to do this." or "We're going to click this button." Without actually explaining it, thank you for being detail-oriented. :)

I love the light theatrics here, they're well delivered, not over the top and fit nicely in *your* style - I dig it - great video, esp for newbies and as someone who owns BC I still don't have a strong command of the tool. This provided me with detailed steps, short brief and to the point which is exactly what I needed. Thanks a ton! PS. I like that you showed the process during your intro instead of making it just a monologue before the show starts 👍

Very informative. However, like so many tutorials, shapes are mostly symmetrical. Many things in life are often at an angle. It would be interesting to see a demo of similar.

I will take a guess.... Boolean and baking some normals with multi res and shrink wrap to a duplicate. Or maybe hey.... will it bake those normals even if you don’t apply the Boolean ? That would be pretty cool. I just started learning baking 2 weeks ago.... and I know little. Enough to get myself into trouble that’s about it really.

Sorry to disappoint you, but the way I do it in this video is not as complicated as you are expecting. In fact, there is no baking or shrink wrap involved. :)

Have you tried adding a solidify modifier to the cutter instead of the duplicate/intersection?
@sinasinaie

That is a valid option in certain cases. The result of the two methods would be slightly different though.

4:18 : Hi. Im stil beginer in unity and At this point I lost for some reason. In object mode I push shift + D to duplicate the object, but a totally new cut object was created, moreover it is not working as cutter. I see on your screen there is no new cutter object. neither for the "cube" or cilinder. What do I do wrong?
@gfrierbrand6962
@gfrierbrand6962 Жыл бұрын
You need to duplicate the cuter in [edit mode]. Then the mesh is still only one Mesh. If you do this in object mode you have have two mesh´s. therfore the cuter dont cut it because its a complete different object.

Great! Also, play around with with "alt+d". It duplicates the object, and keeps the two linked together. So changes (not all though) you make to either, will also affect the other one.

@@sinasinaie Thanks for the tip, yes I will use it, but I avoided it so I could have more freedom when changing it, or is there a way to unlink later? after i generated with alt+d
@sinasinaie
@sinasinaie 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, to remove the link between two objects: 1. go the "object data properties" tab (the icon is a triangle, and its right above the material properties tab). 2. On the top right hand side of this tab, you will see the name of your object. And on the left of the shield icon, you will see a number (most likely, 2). 3. Click on that number to remove the link between the two objects.

This method doesn't work anymore to create a cutout, there's probably a small step to make it work in the current version but following step by step it currently does not.

@@sinasinaie I'm not sure I ended up making a hollow rectangle with a missing face and using one boolean expression with difference. I tried to follow. Not sure why it's not working as prescribed. But I did ultimately achieve my goal using your video so thank you.
