6 жыл бұрынWe are back again with the third part of our sisters Shanty House Crash series! This project is all about How to Make Cabinets Taller! We are taking Leasha's builder grade cabinets and adding height! This was a cheap and great alternative to buying completely new cabinets and/or cabinet doors! With just a few sheets of hardwood plywood, a few boards, a few tools and some elbow grease, we not only added height to her cabinets, we completely updated the style of her kitchen!

It was a little flimsier than I expected. I had to add a 2x2 piece of wood to the bottom on the rear side in order to stabilize it better kzfaq.infoUgkxXTh-lz-8W6GcB219vTLp27-MxbZYObBX . It is also starting to bow a little at the outer wall ( I've had it up for about 6 months), I've already had a shelf tumble down because of the bow and the fact that the little shelf brackets are quite short. I went out to home depot and got some longer ones so that the shelves don't tumble down again. Overall, it looks very nice for the price and it holds a lot ( I use it as a pantry). I am very satisfied with my purchase. I just strongly suggest reinforcing it before putting it up.

My husband built me my farmhouse style shelves with the pipe. The other side of the kitchen has tall cabinets to the ceiling. So on the other side we have a long wall he put the shelves on that side and it balanced the kitchen out. We have a island in the middle so had to be careful not to go to low we could only do two shelves 5ft long worked. He did a awsome job.

First of all love what you did to extend the space! You are probably going to go over this in your next video, but just in case it's a different project.....what type of paint (chalk, regular house paint, ?) was used on the cabinets and did you sand first? Also did you use polyurethane on them after you painted?

I'm definitely doing all of this to my crappy double-wide mobile home cabinets. As well as doing the backsplash. I already have the shiplap wood to do it as well!!

Sweet! I love how you updated this! Would love to see you update upper cabinets with soffits. I can’t figure out if I can remove existing soffits and somehow add additional cabinets (open shelves or stock closed cabinets)?? I believe the space behind the soffits are completely empty (1990’s build, so soffits were a “look”). I’m also looking for advice to add a pantry wall on an empty kitchen wall currently filled by a dining hutch. I need the storage space desperately and hope to add closed floor to ceiling stock cabinet storage in place of the dining hutch Thank you in advance for any suggestions/advice you can offer😊

How awesome!!! It turned out great! Question: would there be any concerns about the additional weight of the wood and decorative items you added to the top of do the cabinets have enough support being screwed into the studs? I’ve always wanted to do this to my kitchen cabinets!

Kathya Kalinine great question..if the plywood is lightweight, it shouldn’t be a problem, but if it’s heavyweight then it will be a problem.. make sure that the total dead load is not more of the weight of the cabinet .. I reckon you can ask your builder of the dead weight of the upper cabinet that it can holds.. that’s why we don’t put kitchenaid mixer in the upper cabinet besides it being heavy to pull out.. remember that you cannot put a lot of heavy things on top of the newly installed shelves... it’s best that one use the same lightweight material as the cabinet..

Do you have to do anything to those pieces before painting them? Also it didn’t look like they sanded the original pieces before painting? I would love to see how you guys did it cause my cabinets look the same. Also I’m in dfw too if you need another house to work on 😋

I wish I had the space to do this, but the area above my cabinets is limited. There is maybe a foot of space between the ceiling and the cabinets.

Wouldn’t the weight of the shelving be too much for the wall cabinet? I would think that you would want to fasten the shelving to the wall separately.
