Adjusting the pedal throw is super helpful to reduce the strange feel of the clutch. When removing the clutch return spring, this simple but effective adjustment changes the feel and engagement of the clutch.

For anyone reading the comments, this is the exact same system on the 08-14 WRX/STi. I had the factory clutch upgraded and it was bothering me how high the "bite" point was. Thanks!

1,000,000 times thanks for this video. My FRS is way better to drive now. The only thing i would add is that rod you were twisting with your fingers... I couldn't get it to turn. So i had to use a pair of vice grips to get it to turn.

Great videos about this modification. The clutch feel has been one of my biggest pet peeves about my FRS. I'm just so use to my mazdaspeed miata FM2 clutch and never skipping leg day. The assist spring MUST GO!

They make shift springs as well. I plan to order a set after I upgrade my clutch next month. There’s a transmission bushing as well. All of the above would most likely aid in better shifts.

good video. I too had the issue (like everyone else) with smooth take-offs and gear changes in this car. also the difficulty in getting 2nd gear. when you see the reviews for this car they all rave about how great the box is but anyone who lives with this car for even a short period of time feels like a gumby with shitty takeoffs at the lights and jerky spaz gear changing. I have driven manual cars for 20 years but felt like a learner in this car. I hadn't stalled a car in 20 years but when I got my 86 I stalled it about 3 or 4 times and I consider myself an above average to good driver - frustrating!!! I will be adjusting my clutch pedal travel shortly thanks to your video but I did the following mods that assisted greatly as well. I changed the stock transmission fluid to Penrite GL5 and added Penrite Shift-Eze which improved the 2nd gear selection - didn't seem to take as long to settle down when cold. I installed the MTEC clutch spring which helped a lot with pedal feel. the MTEC shifter springs which makes the whole shift gate feel better, more positive, and assisted with further smoothing out changes into 2nd gear. I have put in the Whiteline positive shift kit which, like the shifter springs, has made a big improvement in selection across the box especially 2nd gear. finally the Whiteline differential mount cradle insert. I have gotten rid of most of the slop out of the driveline. there is a very small increase in gearbox noise in the cabin that unless you are a car nut you would not notice - my wife can tell no difference. there is still a very slight hesitation going into second gear when it's cold but this disappears very quickly indeed i.e. in one to two minutes. with all these mods I now have a gear change experience that is streets ahead of where it was stock. it's now positive, smooth and snickety snick goodness all through the rev range when driving like grandma or Fangio. I cannot recommend all of these mods highly enough. the clutch pedal adjustment which you have done might just be the icing on the cake.

Peter thank you for the in depth comment. I agree completely with the stock shift system. I learned to drive on tractors and small dump trucks. Drove them for about 15 years or so. This was harder to drive and feel. Between removing the assist spring, adjusting the pedal, using Motel gear oil, and a new clutch/LW flywheel, it’s a different car. After your recommendation I will move the shift springs and bushings higher on my list. I’m glad you enjoy your car for what it is! They’re an excellent chassis and drive so good.

Just did this modification and removed the clutch spring and wow, it feels like a completely different car. Finding the clutch bite point is not easier which I find strange, but the reduced travel makes shifting so much easier. The pedal also feels spongy, and feels like most other normal cars.
