How to Adjust Coilovers Ride Height
This is a quick guide on how to adjust coilovers ride height. It is very easy to adjust ride height with coilovers. The main reason coilovers are installed is to have height adjustment. Coilover suspension allows you to adjust ride height to meet the goals of your car. They can be used to raise your car height up or lower your car down. If you have never done this, this is a great quick video on how to adjust coilovers. This video focuses on coilover ride height adjustment only. Adjusting preload is typically not needed for most coilover installs.

Thanks! This is the BEST video I've seen about adjusting the ride height - and one of the few that shows that the casing and casing lock ring are key for actual height adjustments. Also, I do lighting work for various indie series/films, and I gotta say, I truly love your use of light and shadows to make the viewer's attention focus on exactly what's relevant (while still lighting enough of the scene to give them solid points of reference).

*It's funny everyone watched the video and still confused 😂😂😂...Looky here people. The 1st ring is a preset preload it tightens clockwise ( left ) on the thread, the 2ND ring tightens counter clockwise (right ) to lock in the preload ring...Stay with me...THEY SHOULD NEVER BE BOTHERED WITH UNLESS REFURBISHING. The 3rd ring locks to the perch itself clockwise. So to lower you would need to unlock the 3rd ring, then turn the 1st clockwise ( your left ), to raise use the 2nd ring. When raising, the 3rd ring automatically goes up with the thread, when you reach your height you need to twist it back down to lock the perch.*

Not sure who Liked my comment but if it helps anyone, I contacted BC Racing and they told me there's holes in the base and as long as you can see the threads through those holes, you're good. Hope this helps someone but I needed to know because my exhaust before installing BC racing coilovers was at 4" exactly from the ground. Since BC says you'll lose 1/2" to 1" of clearance, I was worried about my exhaust clearing speed bumps etc. And FYI, since I've installed the BC coilovers, I actually gained about 2-3" 🤣 Just shows how bad my struts were! Now I'm sitting about 4-5" high in the wheel well, not shitting you, and I love it! Rear bumper sits like 6 or 7 inches from the ground and I've got that mean hot rod look 🤣 I'll be lowering it soon cause I feel like I'm sitting in a truck in my G35 🤣

Hello, question: There isn’t much thread room left on my coilovers to go any lower, but i still need it a bit lower. So, if I were to increase my spring rate(which would expose more threading), would using up that extra threading end up lowering my car? It makes sense to me but I’m not sure if increasing the spring rate is going to affect the ride height as well…
@13Recon19D
@13Recon19D Жыл бұрын
Increasing the preload will affect the ride and performance. If your already set at the appropriate spring load for your vehicle, I would not advise adjusting it. Your best option is to find a coilover set designed to go lower, or contact the manufacturer to ask if they have other spring options that could achieve what you are wanting.
@MrSanjeevsan
@MrSanjeevsan Жыл бұрын
If your spring is not progressive (i.e. the loops of the coils are all equally spaced and are all the same size), you're not actually increasing the spring rate. What you're planning to do would just screw up the preload and performance of your suspension if overdone and make you bottom out badly if you hit a big pothole (your spring is too compressed and not playing its part). You MAYBE could get away with another 1 more turn or so, but personally, I wouldn't risk it. If the spring looks like the loops are smaller and more tightly coiled towards one end, that means you have progressive spring and you could get away with doing what u plan to do. Meaning, you could squeeze the preload tighter to get a bit lower to the ground. Doing this on a progressive spring increases the spring rate and that just means that you're gonna feel a stiffer ride, but won't be 8n as much of a risk to bottom out and the ride won't be as crashy. I'm no expert, the above is just from my own understanding and research on the topic. As the person above me mentioned, if your springs are not progressive, your be much better of getting a stiffer shorter spring than the one that you currently have. All the best in your car modding journey. I'm also learning daily and applying all kinds of stuff on my own build.

So what ur saying issss if the coil or spring is sitting at the bottom then that’s why I’m experiencing a stiff asf ride? Would raising it 1 inch or 2 make the ride smoother? Asking because all my four coils r sitting at the bottom (maxed out) and the ride experience is terrible 😭
@13Recon19D

@@ocdannyy if you increased spring load to go lower, then maybe. Or if you have the dampening adjust too stiff, or it could just be the coilovers themselves. A lot of lower end coils have terrible ride quality.

Likely you will need to adjust each side to a different height. Each vehicle is different and likely doesn’t have a perfect weight distribution (side to side) so one side will typical need adjusted higher/lower than the other to achieve the same visual ride height on each side. Starting with the same adjustment on each side is a good place to start, but you’ll likely still need to adjust from there.

the two rings you have are very likely spring height adjustment so the actual way that should be done, you can check out a brand like KW suspension or MCA suspension for more suspensions of similar type for install instructions. If you loosen the spring you are lowering the car, if you tightening spring and compress the spring, it will raise the height. Think of it like this, if you loosen the spring and the top and bottom seat locks arent touching the spring, when you put the car back on the ground it will compress the damper until the spring is touching the top and bottom seats again, compressing and holding the spring. The issue with this is potential odd spring movement so some cars run helper springs to keep the springs in place, or you can get some.

Everyone gets this wrong. Bottom mount is used to set droop at ride height. You should have 2/3 bump and 1/3 droop at your desired height. Then you fit the spring and use the spring mount to set ride height. There’s no real preload as the springs are linear. Otherwise how would you corner weight the car? All you’re doing in the video is moving the bottom arm up or down relative to the top mount.

@waybach

@TomboysOnlyFool
@TomboysOnlyFool 8 ай бұрын
The lower ring is there as a stoper to keep the lower bracket portion in the same spot. If you spun the bottom one instead, id assume 3 things could possibly happen. First, nothing would happen because the lower bracket wouldn't be able to spin because its still stuck on the control arm, and the collar ring would keep the thread from moving down. Second, if it does spin it would result in the threaded portion going up inside the spring instead of down into the body of the bracket where it's supposed to go. Id assume this would result in less clearance for the spring, though i could be wrong on this since im not 100% sure. Lastly, and most likely , spinning it from the bottom ring could mess with the preload of the spring, because you're causing the change in height to occur at the top ring, which is where spring preload is measured at

Are you referring to pre adjusting the ride height? You can do that but you really won’t know how low or high it sits until the coilovers are on and the car is on the ground.

Pre load isn't a real think, you are moving the travel distance part, should move the spring not the part that goes into the lower housing

@philz40
@philz40 Жыл бұрын
It’s fine, you haven’t damaged the coilover or changed the preload (assuming) the top ring didn’t move up. When both top and locking ring are together they move as one unit because they are usually seized together over time. The reason they tell you to adjust height with the locking ring and not the top ring or vice versa, is so that both rings do not loosen

For the love of god!!!!! The helper springs are there to help you to set up your ride height. This is just wrong! Your shock mounts are there to setup the total shock body length, so when you hit a huge bump your shocks bottom out first before your tires shooting through the roof.
