Thank you so much for this great advice. I have a 2017 Ram 1500 Outdoorsman that has the exact same zinc plated lever, which I bent slightly after watching this video.I had lubricated everything up to that point and nothing else worked. I had just replaced the tailgate and the bodyshop had the latch working but it didn't last. Your fix did the job. Many thanks.

You’re welcome. Please let us know how it worked out. Otherwise you’ll just have to buy a new latch. But why not try and fix it first.

Just did this little fix and will see how it lasts. If I have more problems I might add a rubber piece as someone else commented. Thanks for the video.

It has been a year on this farm truck. They are not too gentle with it and so far it opens fine.

Take a 1/2 inch i.d. Piece of vinyl tubing. Heat the end and then push it over the black tab. Use a pocket knife to trim. Quick and easy

What I have done, is take some hose that will fit over the plastic arm with a lil rtv to keep it from falling off.

I had a similar situation on my 11 1500. Versus bending the arm and fatiguing the metal, I added a small rubber bumper to it. Yes the bumper can wear out but so far 7 years later it has not. I'm not fan of bending and weakening metal

That is a good idea John! When I did the video, it was live and a split decision as to how I was going to fix it. (All I knew is is was hard to open) Next time I might try that! This is a country truck doing miles of gravel roads each day. Lots of abrasive stuff gets in the gate.

It’s a little piece of metal in the tailgate latch assembly, not a structural piece. Who cares if you bend it and weaken it slightly as it will still be plenty strong enough to not ever cause a issue and is not even the source of the problem. The issue was the plastic wearing out, not the metal fatiguing or bending. So pay no attention or worry about “metal fatigue” in this situation for whoever reads this and attempts repair, don’t let that scare you.

Nice quick fix Mark. Sharing One thing I added to my 2016 ram when I bought it - the Dee Zee tailgate assist strut that allows the tailgate to open slowly and controlled.

Really good stuff! Its wool wax and creeps into a larger area. Great to stop rust from continuing to do more damage. Some use it for undercoating, but it can wash off. Great for spraying in areas that are not affected at the car wash. (Inside doors, fenders, etc)

Thanks R Doobies, for the "thin" complement! At 6' 5.5" I hide my weight well! (Probably 250 lbs at moment) So far, no issues with the handle and gate and the owner is kinda hard on his truck!

Was the video of help to you? As to editing it down, it may have been possible, sure. Easily? I see in what, the 11 years you have been on KZfaq you have posted 1 video? Based on that, I find it hard to believe you know what your talking about. Post a few hundred and get back to me.

Instead of investigating and attacking me for pointing out the obvious, maybe simply take my advice instead of getting all triggered over it. But now I see I'm not the only one who you've criticized in response to helpful advice.

Good come back! After 8 minutes, KZfaq will put a 2nd commercial in the video and then I can make another .025 cents! As this is my part time job, but soon to be in it full time, longer videos pay the bills. That being said, I am experimenting with ways to still get the payment but show you how to fix it in a shorter period of time. Many viewers have never owned a screw driver, so they need as fair bit of "hold this like that" etc.

Yes, they put another video after 8 minutes and you do make an extra .025 cents because of it. But that wasn't the case when you originally uploaded the video.
