Great video. I'm mostly impressed with your responses in the comments. I don't wanna come off as rude but I'd like to include some things. If the adjusting ring is seized it's ok to spray wd-40 on the adjusting ring. You can then work the ring back and forth till it breaks free instead of replacing the clutch. The wd-40 is recommended by eaton. Also the adjusting ring seizes in the clutch housing because of the lack of the need to adjust a clutch, either because the truck sits a lot like a landscapers dump or the driver is very good at not wearing a clutch. If either is the case it is recommended to move the adjusting ring 15 degrees or 4 notches and then move it back to where it was. Because the clutch hardly ever needs adjustment it helps prevent seizing. Seized rings can lead to broken adjuster gears or broken notches. Bottom line is if the ring doesn't move don't force it. Spray some penitent or give the housing a couple of taps.

You're welcome, there is another type of clutch adjustment that is different but easier, no clamp to take off, just a bolt to turn, you need a short socket and 2" extension or a deep socket and you need to push the adjusting bolt in to turn it, you may need to use a pry bar behind the ratchet to push it in, you still need to hold the clutch pedal down. (Just in case you have the other kind) Thanks for watching

Once you find the location of the lock tab, mark the front crankshaft pulley on the engine with a paint marker so you will know where the engine needs to be turned to adjust the clutch. As Jeremy Dunn said below, there should be 1/2" gap between the clutch brake and the transmission front housing with the clutch released. Normally this gap will be correct with the free travel at 2" unless someone messed around with the clutch linkage.

l don't know why more people don't make that mark on the crankshaft damper.........the perfect way to know you're in the right spot to adjust the clutch.......
@MrBullfrog926 жыл бұрын
You always adjust so that you have 1/2" gap between the throw out bearing and clutch brake when the clutch break is pushed all the way over to the transmission face. Once you have this gap then you adjust your clutch linkages to get the right freeplay. Its amazing how many clutches are fkd up and never adjusted properly
@cheguevara55604 жыл бұрын
Exactly right ,the first adjustment is on clutch brake 1/2 inch and than free play on clutch pedal . He missed step one ;did not check clutch brake gap .
@connershepherd9982 жыл бұрын
Thanks man more information than I’ve seen all day, my clutch jumps under hard load and pedal doesn’t have any free play and people keep telling me it’s the linkages. I don’t think so
@MrBullfrog922 жыл бұрын
@@connershepherd998 yep adjust the gap first. Once set up you shouldn't have to change the linkages at all. The gap will get larger and you lose free pedal as the clutch wears. Adjust for the 1/2 gap and your free pedal should return to where it needs to be without adjustment of the linkages assuming it was set up right to start with!

Good explanation of clutch pedal free play. Easier way to check adjustment is to have a half inch space between release bearing and clutch brake. Eighth inch space between fork and release bearing. Usually with those 2 measurements in spec the pedal free play will be dead on. Pedal free play only applies to mechanical linkage trucks. Hydraulic clutches will have no free play but still need half inch between realease bearing and clutch brake. Make sure to lube the release bearing while your at it getting a light coating of grease on the clutch brake. Regardless of what your "mechanic" tells you clutch brakes are made of friction materials that benefit from lubrication. Eaton has videos on here showing how to properly grease and service heavy duty clutches.

I hook a remote starter switch to the starter then ya can lay under the truck and bump it yourself
@kevinyork25176 жыл бұрын
You should always adjust your clutch first and then adjust your clutch free play after. That type of clutch that was being adjusted is a Rockwel brand clutch and a eaton fuller road ranger behind it.
@azznbad14 жыл бұрын
You are adjusting your clutch when you adjust free travel. Once you set the dimension A if you lack free travel then you adjust linkage. The only reason to adjust a clutch is that you have lost free travel, the clutch brake doesnt stop the trans or the clutch is trying to slip but that goes back to free travel and in both cases the dimension A is going to be to wide. Free travel is what the adjustment does.

On Eaton Fuller transmision ,your clutch adjustment is in same location ,under the cover on bellhousing on but instead of using scredriver you need 9/16 inch socket and long handle ratchet .You need to push socket hard in in order to go clockway ,adjusting bolt is spring loaded . Gap at clutch brake should be 1/2 inch after that you check your pedal free play and adjust the clutch cable or linkage .

I don't know, this is how I was taught to do it, there is a special tool for turning the flywheel to get it in the right position, it's a small gear that goes in the bell housing from the front side and you turn it with a ratchet.

I have done something like that on a car years ago and vaguely remember doing it through the shifter hole, wasn't complicated but was a car, I think a Nissan late '80s or early '90s I never did that on a truck, but the shifter comes off easily only a couple little tricks to get the air lines off the range selector, better research a bit before trying it.

@firstname62085 жыл бұрын
that is a Rockwell angle spring clutch. years ago they went to auto adjust, we replaced a lot of them with the manual adjust as the auto adjust ring would freeze and as soon as the free play was gone they would slip and burn up. new trucks today have auto shift gear box transmission with a computer controlled clutch air cylinder. lighter straight trucks had the lipe rollaway clutch. it had 2 large nuts on the input shaft you unlock one and spin the other to adjust the free play then lock the first one against it to hold the adjustment.
