Im working with a 4 way stretch knit fabric and I need the serge stitch to actually stretch with the fabric and come back together with the fabric. So far the stitch wants to slide, as if I did a gathering basting stitch on my regular sewing machine. Or it will pull with the fabric and won't come back, keeping the fabric stretched out. Any master tips for a 4 way stretch setting? Btw. Thank for the videos. They are helpful. Please let me know if i missed a video you did on knits.
@SewDIY
@SewDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Olga! I'm so glad that the videos have been helpful for you. It sounds like maybe one of the needle threads is too tight. The stitches should be able to stretch with the fabric. If you can't get the serger and this fabric to cooperate, you could do a zig zag or lightning (aka stretch) stitch on your conventional machine. Both stitches will stretch with the fabric. The lightning stitch is also very sturdy and unlikely to pull at the seams. Good luck!

I doing a 4 way stitch on a one way stretch fabric.... what settings should I try first? I don’t have much scrap fabric to use as I already cut my fabric for what it’s being used for
@SewDIY

Hi Tiffany, The default would be all 4's. If you have a similar fabric, you could use it to test stitches first.

Hi Beth, super helpful and well explained, thanks! I usually sew with three threads and often have the problem that if I sew two parts together, you can see the thread on the other side if you pull the fabrics apart. Tried a lot of different combinations already but still couldn't find the perfect tention. Do you have any recommendations for that?
@SewDIY
@SewDIY 5 жыл бұрын
I'm so glad that it was helpful. :) Is the problem that when you open up the fabric, you can see the thread on the right side of the garment, in between the two pieces of fabric? I would try tightening the tension for that. If you are seeing the needle thread on the back side of the stitching, it could be that the lower looper is too tight or that the needle thread is too loose.

What would you set your tensions on for flannel fabric?
@SewDIY
@SewDIY Жыл бұрын
In my experience, I have to fiddle with the tension every time I sew. At first I made notes about different kinds of fabric and the tension that worked but those numbers didn't always work in the future. My only idea for why is that it has to do with humidity or something.

Excellent, REALLY helpful video. I have been on KZfaq for over an hour trying to find a fix for my serger that keeps causing puckers in my fabric. It's the needle tension...who knew?! I can't thank you enough....PLEASE make more serger videos (i.e. how do you do seam allowances on sergers without a guide), as there aren't nearly enough of them on KZfaq.

What is the cause of the loops standing proud of the edge of material?
@SewDIY
@SewDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, I'm not totally sure what you mean. It sounds like one of the tension dials is too loose, likely the lower looper. Hope that helps!

Hi I will try that, but happened when doesn’t sew at all, what do you think could be?
@SewDIY
@SewDIY Жыл бұрын
Hmm, it could be a lot of different issues. It's hard to trouble shoot without more details. If the machine turns on and the needles move and threading is correct, there may be an issue with the needles being old or bent.

I didn’t learn what my problem is it’s like the needle threads are doing basting stitching and 1 of my lower loopers is extending past the fabric edge and thoughts
@SewDIY
@SewDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kay, I'd check the dials on the left bottom part of the machine to check the stitch length. Then, try tightening the tension on the lower looper to bring the thread loops closer to the fabric edge.

Hi Karen, If you do want to look for another machine, I'd try shopping at a local dealer. They often will provide hands on instruction when you purchase a machine. Plus, before you buy, you'll be able to try out the machine in the store. You can ask the sales people questions and even request demonstrations for threading or adjusting tension. You can also bring fabric with you that you want to test sewing with. Good luck!

I wish I could! When I first got my machine, I diligently wrote down the settings that worked for different types of fabric but they never seemed to work twice. I'd always have to fiddle a bit to get it right again. I feel like the machine is really sensitive (maybe to humidity or something?).

@SewDIY
@SewDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ebonie, If you've triple checked that you're threading the machine correctly, then it sounds like there might be a bigger problem with the machine. Sometimes, a low quality thread or bent needle can also cause a problem. I'm sorry I can't be more help. If changing thread and needles and adjusting tension discs doesn't change anything, I'd take it to a repair shop.

not helpful at all. you did not tell how to correct it. whether to move the dial up or down? like if the upper loop is tight-so we move to bigger number or smaller? vice versa
@SewDIY

Sorry for the confusion. If it is too tight, then you need to move to a smaller number. The higher the number, the more tension there is.
