@@jessicagreene2649 Ok lets see if I can try to help here. One way is to try and use acetone to take the black off before painting. This way might be more important for you: Start with a layer of dark grey, then a layer of light grey, then a layer of white, then a layer of pink. They gray will cover the black better because it has more pigment in it than the pink. You probably dont want super thick layers of paint.

Hi, good video thanks. I'm planning a slight bigger project, like change colour on motorcycle leathers do you know a coverage for 30ml jar? also if it have to be any specific thiner, or those paints can be thin? In most of my projects I use water base automotive paints, for helmets or bikes, so for big are like jacket I was thinking about using airbrush. Thanks in advance! B.

You need 2-Thin for airbrush, not water. 30ml can cover more than it looks maybe a medium sized purse, but getting the 4oz may help.

@MarldainLunas

That just depends how vibrant you want it to be. You want to do fewer layers of paint, so if you are using a dark paint then a dark base is ok. But if you want white or yellow, you should use a light base. Try painting yellow over black, and yellow over white to see what I mean.

@MarldainLunas

Depending on how much pigment the final paint you want it to be you could either go straight for it, or build up the pigments. So for example, if its a light brown you are putting on black it should be fine. Whereas yellow, blue, pink; those dont have the strongest of pigments so you could build them up differently. To do this here is a trick: You are using yellow? First layer will be light gray, second layer 50-50 gray and white, third layer white, fourth layer yellow. You basically want it to be vibrant or dark. Putting light yellow straight on to black, you would end up painting like 10+ layers and it still wont be as vibrant as you like. In the video I used vanilla, which has white and brown which are both strong pigments so I didnt need to too many layers for it to be a solid color.

The bluish undertone of the mint should actually help with the tone of the off white. You would just need the off white. It will take a few layers to get a solid color, but it should be just fine

@MarldainLunas
@MarldainLunas 2 жыл бұрын
Angelus paint is perfect for the project. First you should use 'preparer and deglazer' or acetone to remove any of the factory protectants or finishes. Then you can start painting. Since it is a larger surface I do suggest using an airbrush, but you can do it with brushes. I suggest a soft larger brush, not really the paint store kind because the bristles are too thick. Be sure to follow my video on how to spread the paint. Have a good covered first layer, that is thin, and let it dry a good amount of time before the next layer. Once its painted, may take 5 or more layers. Finish it With a top coat meant for leather. I suggest Liquid Kicks, but angelus just released some finishers that are essentially the same thing.

If it is dark brown: First layer light gray, second layer 50/50 light gray and white. Third layer white. Fourth layer pink. It should be more vibrant when you bring the saturation of dark and muddy, and slowly bringing it up brighter.

Hello. Is a finisher mandatory after applying the paint? What happens if I don't use one?
@MarldainLunas
@MarldainLunas 3 жыл бұрын
While you dont have to have one it is certainly suggested to use one. One reason is to change the sheen of the paint, because the paint can be too shiny sometimes. Another reason is to provide a layer that helps resist scratching and scuffing a little bit.

@MarldainLunas

@@gberia1 I would say no to the leather conditioner, because that is meant to rehydrate the leather. With paint it wont do the same thing. You could use a matte finisher or clear coat from a spray can as well. Just use 1 or 2 very light coats. If you use too much it will get too hard.

Does thinning it out with water also work since it's water based?
@MarldainLunas
@MarldainLunas 2 жыл бұрын
It is water based yes, but its not water as the medium, 2thin is. The difference is that 2thin is a medium that keeps the color pigment evenly spread throughout the paint mixture. Angelus paint is water soluble, meaning the more water you ad, it breaks down that medium and makes the pigments clump together.

@MarldainLunas
@MarldainLunas 3 жыл бұрын
Only way for it to crack will be if you bend and crease it at a 90 degree angle, which you wouldnt be doing with a belt. Just prep it well by sanding it a little with 400 grit sandpaper, then use acetone to remove any of the factory sealers, then you can apply your paint. Also suggest giving it a spreay of clear coat for scratches. I do this with sneakers which take an incredible beating, and Angelus is 100% specialized in durability.

Can these paints be used on the back of faux leather? And does it need to be sealed afterward?
@MarldainLunas
@MarldainLunas 3 жыл бұрын
Yes they can be applied to things that look like leather as well as fabric. What you see me using in the video is 'pleather' with a fabric backing. If you are going to paint on the fabric part you will need more layers for it to look consistent. It is better to paint the 'leather' side. And yes a sealer will help with creating a nice sheen, as well as protecting from minor scuffs. Angelus finisher works pretty well. What are you planning on painting?

@@SnifflesMcDarkspots if you want to change the color of the fabric without making it stiff you can use a fabric additive called 2soft. Mix your paint in a 1:1 ratio with 2soft. Paint your fabric. I'm thinking of painting a leather jacket does the paint look natural in person or are people able to tell that its painted?
@MarldainLunas
@MarldainLunas 2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. Well that boils down to a couple things to keep in mind. The biggest thing is matching the sheen of the rest of the leather. If you cover your paint with a gloss, but the rest of the leather is matte it will look strange, if you know what I mean. I recommend Liquid Kicks finishers, and Angleus new leather finishers. I personally paint portions of leather, but I presume you want to paint the entire thing? If that is the case, then angelus does look like leather. As long as you use thin smooth layers it will keep the texture of the original leather. If painting only a portion, say a picture, you would want to keep the color scheme in mind if you want a more natural look. Hope that helps?
@racistape
@racistape 2 жыл бұрын
@@MarldainLunas Actually the jacket is red it only has two 2 inches long black strips that I want to paint white, I was thinking of using the matte finisher cause it's not a new jacket. But I'm not sure how the matte finish will match the rest of the jacket.
@MarldainLunas
@MarldainLunas 2 жыл бұрын
@@racistape Well without seeing the jacket I would suggest liquid kicks 'factory' finish. It has a slight sheen to it but closer to a well worn leather. Also going from black to white is the hardest color choice you could do. Do a layer of dark gray, then light gray, then off white, then white. Airbrush would be preferable.

Can you elaborate what you mean? I understand going with the grain is true for painting on wood, but for leather?
@randy1ization
@randy1ization Жыл бұрын
@@MarldainLunas the grain in the leather is similar to the grain on wood.. it has tiny crevices in it, and if you paint into the crevices of the grain it will cover more evenly and faster. everything has surface tension, and the paint resist going into the cracks. I can see on your vid the grain tends to run horizontally. if u look at it closely, u will see it . cowhide leather has a ladder type pattern to it.,
@MarldainLunas
@MarldainLunas Жыл бұрын
@@randy1ization Interesting. From what I have experienced it is mostly just randomized raised bumps and divots. I work mostly with sneaker leathers so they are either poor quality or synthetic and dont have a structured grain to speak of. Usually for the most part when doing purses and shoes its on the rough side of the leather and not the 'skin side?' or they have already been previously painted in some way. It is probably important if painting raw leather, but I dont know. I cant find any research or discussions about this topic anywhere, only about when cutting the leather the grain is important for bending and flexing. I will try to do more research and if you would be willing to cite any references that would be wonderful
