I, Typoh. Discuss the not-so-recent Disney + show The Book of Boba Fett, its quality, its reception from Star Wars KZfaqrs such as Star Wars Explained and its portrayal of the aforementioned enigmatic Star Wars character, Boba Fett. The show's portrayal of the popular Star Wars/Lucasfilm character is one that is in direct contrast to his portrayal across other Star Wars Material, such as the Disney + and Jon Favreau/Dave Filoni show: The Mandalorian. I'm typing like this to assist in the algorithm, so I will also add that Boba Fett also appeared in the new Lego Star Wars game: Lego Star Wars the Skywalker Saga and that Jango Fett also appears in that game, this show, and this video. Furthermore, I allude to the upcoming Disney + Star Wars show Kenobi arriving on May 27th, 2022, now that that's out of the way...

The problem is Disney being too frightened to try. They were scared of having a brutal crimelord, so they tried desperatley to make him look more noble, and in doing so pretty much ruined the very thing that made him appealing.

The guy does well and continues to do well in one endeavour, then in what should be the exact same endeavour (but now with someone else interest in the project) completely messes it up... you can almost always grantee that "someone else" has gotten in the way. I hear this a lot and respectfully disagree. Unfortunately, it's far worse and more sinister then that. Disney is quite evil and has an agenda. Smart invading armies burn the libraries. Destroy the myths, legends and stories of a people or nation and you cut them off at the knees. Often, without a single shot fired and in today's case, most not realizing it even happened.

That's exactly how I felt. I feel the problem is Disney was unwilling to have a main character that is villainous. Because the changes to his character appear the moment his show began. Not in Mando season 2, but right after he guned down Bib in cold blood.

Lando when Vader goes against his initial promise: "That was never a part of the deal, nor was giving Han to this bounty hunter!" "I have altered the deal, prey I don't alter it further." Basically, when Lando has an issue, Vader says " I don't care, get fucked." Now, compare to Boba raising issue with Vader. "What if he doesn't make it? He's worth a lot to me." "The Empire will compensate you if he dies." The implications for this are huge as it can easily be inferred Vader respected or at least recognized Boba's capabilities and didn’t want to alienate such a valuable asset. Moreover, it shows Boba wasn't afraid of Darth Vader. Where was that guy in BOBF?!

Bouncing off that idea, Boba Fett's arc in the Book of Boba Fett should be about him reclaiming his roots, become Mandalorian. Didn't know that! Would have helped make the character feel like OT Boba. And although Disney has bungled it big time, Morrison does a fine job with what he's given, and in good shape even if he's a little paunchy. Great screen presence. If he didn't then it wouldn't even be watchable. I don't expect Disney to fix the character but it's certainly within their power to do so. All they would have to do is in the first or 2nd episode of the next season, have Boba learn a lesson that being a compassionate and cuddly goody-two-shoes has really screwed him and his buddies over. Like if nearly everyone's massacred, especially his dull wooden sidekick. Get rid of her and the candy colored gang. Audiences would cheer!! Essentially he'll have learned his lesson and the useless riff-raff are gone. I saw people say "Oh they did that in the prequels with lightsaber fights" but that's very different. While turning your back in a sword fight irl is very rediculous, Jedi can sense each other's presence in a fight with their back turned. Doing a spin while swinging both keeps their momentum in the fight while also making their close-range melee combat harder to predict. Meanwhile, some random, non-force sensitive cyborg who does a spin before shooting a blaster at a distance? That literally is the dumbest thing ever. At least with the ligthsaber duels, since it was close range, it actually may have some benefits with being unpredictable with your movements, but you spinning in place in a gun fight is not gonna make you harder to shoot

Kinda cucked him even in that scene though, because then he gets beat up by Bo- Katan’s punk Mando side chick. I genuinely rewrote the latter half of that scene once because it angered me after watching Book of Boba that this scene in Mando was essentially the start of his downward spiral under Disney, and at the time we just didn’t realize it. Here, I’ll paste it here if any of you guys are curious. I’m not a professional writer by any means, so feel free to critique or comment on it. || Boba: Mandalore? You gotta be kidding. The Empire turned that planet to glass. Bo: You are a disgrace to your armor… Boba: This armor belonged to my father. Bo: Don’t you mean your donor? Boba: Oh, that reminds me. I was meaning to ask. How’s your sister? (Bo lashes out at Boba, throwing a punch that gets her arm caught in his grip and her body pulled over his shoulder, slamming her to the floor. Boba whips out his pistol and points it right at her head) Boba: A shame you don’t have your helmet on. Cause now there’s nothing to stop me putting a blaster bolt between those pretty little eyes. (Bo subtly attempts to reach for one of her pistols. Boba responds with a shot that hits the ground an inch from her hand.) Boba: Careful now. Next time I won’t miss. Stay down. (Bo rests on the ground, defeated.) Boba: Smart move. (Boba turns to leave, before leaning towards Din Djarin.) Boba: I’ll be in the ship. See if you can explain things to her, calm her down a bit. Just let me know if she gives you any more trouble. It would give me an excuse to kill her. (Boba starts to walk away. Koska Reeves draws one of her pistols and points it at Boba’s back, making Din nervous.) Koska: Hey! You think you can just knock her down like that and walk away? (Boba turns back slightly) Boba: Yes, actually, I do. Unless you’d like to join her on the floor? (Koska fires a shot and Boba dodges it, spinning around quickly and firing off three rapid shots that all hit her square on the beskar chest plate and knock her flat on her back. Boba gives his pistol a cowboy spin before holstering it again and walking out the door. Din pulls Koska up to her feet, then Bo.) Din: Sorry about that. He’s- Bo: A clone. I know how they are. I’ve heard his voice thousands of times. Din: It’s not important. We still need your help, even if he won’t admit it. (Continue the scene on mostly as before). ||

Do you remember the time he fought Darth Vader over a score and when Vader had Boba Fett in his grip Boba Fett then through the score over a cliff towards the river of Lava. Vader released Fett focusing his attention on the score. In that moment Fett could have killed Vader then and there, but Fett knew killing Vader would only result in a lifetime of running from the Empire as it sought retribution. Instead, he took the opportunity to escape and waited for Vader's rage to quell so that the two could work in the future as allies. The BOBF had an opportunity to being a mafia style story mixed with some western elements, something cool and fresh in the Star Wars lore. I'll grant that his character development with the Tuskens was interesting, but after that, Boba's just "there." His mystique and imposing presence is just gone. Agree. The near-death experience and the Tuskens changing Boba was not a bad idea. But we see it led to nowhere. We didn't get to see a ruthless bounty hunter as he used to be, nor a smart and uncompromising mafia boss. He was a complete mess. We didn't want to see The Mandalorian all over again. We would have loved to see the opposite: A former bounty hunter now settling for that crime boss position on Tatooine. His mission should have been the extermination of any opposition and the enforcement of alliances and loyalty. That would have been in great contrast to The Mandalorian whose protagonist has turned from a dogmatic mandalorian into a caring father figure. Boba Fett should have been the polar opposite and they should have crossed paths only at a point where it was clear that their motivations and interests are totally different.

I feel like they should’ve done The book of Boba Fett like the did with The Batman (2022). Boba is notoriously the most feared bounty hunter in the galaxy as stated many times. And now he’s back from the dead? While everyone thinks he’s gone? Man, they missed a shot to make the most badass vengeance story with Boba. That scene in The Batman where penguin’s car flips over and he stares at vengeance while he’s slowly walking towards him with the flames in the background, that should’ve been Boba Fett to Bid Fortuna. Coming back to take what he thinks he deserves. But you know…. that never happened.
@freddytheplatypus826
@freddytheplatypus826 Жыл бұрын
the problem is Bib Fortuna was never written to be a formidable antagonist to Boba...he was just a leftover from the movie canon and only there as Jabba's servant. (now I can't speak on the EU and how he factored into there, but I'm just talking from what I know) Even if this scene had gone down exactly how you described, it would not have had the same emotional weight that you think that it had with the Penguin in the Batman. The movie sets up The Penguin as a rival to the Batman, and we see him endanger the lives of hundreds of drivers all to stop Batman. That is a formidable foe. I do agree that they got Boba's character completely wrong- this whole idea that Boba was getting "revenge" is so out of his character because he knows that all the consequences that come as a result of his job are his doing, so he wouldn't waste his time on a vendetta. He would frame it as just part of the job and collecting debts or whatever so that he can continue doing jobs in the future.

The cinematography of TV Star Wars is pretty awful, with exception to The Mandalorian. The Obi-Wan show has a $25 million budget per episode but visually none of it would get a pass in a feature film and Star Wars has been cutting edge visuals and sound before Disney. Sets look like plastic, costumes are dull and they can’t even make a chase scene with any sense of momentum or urgency. Look at Peter Suschitsky’s camerawork on Empire. Look at the colour palette. Look at the Falcon cockpit’s new lighting scheme or how Cloud City takes on a fiery red-orange at the climax of the movie. Sets, ships, props, costumes, aliens…. Finn and Poe were the only "comic relief" characters, and even then they were relegated to the sidelines. The live action series are also far from being comedies. The only star wars shows that actually have comedy are the animated series like Clone Wars because they're marketed to younger audiences as well. If 'the Book of Boba Fett' had been only half as interesting as 'The Godfather', we would have had a much better show. I mean, come one. The Pikes are landing their soldiers on Tattooine and Boba Fett has a very good, if not one of the best snipers in the galaxy on his payroll. Shoot them. He says money is not a problem? Hire mercenaries and have them attack Pike operations on other planets. One of the premises of the show is a war in the criminal underworld over Tattooine. Pretty much my issue, other than the show being utterly ridiculous in general. From the outset I didn't like the idea of Boba being a crime lord, cause it would tie him down and make him unable to have direct agency in the show (which is exactly what happened). But I figured as long as they were going with it, they could at at LEAST make it a good crime show. But we didn't get that, either. We got a show about this loser who spends half his time in a bath, and the other half getting his butt kicked by people who he goes out of his way to disrespect and aggravate. He demands respect but does nothing to earn it, neither by moral nor immoral means. There's absolutely nothing stopping any crime syndicate from storming his palace and blasting him, if he posed any serious threat to them. Everyone in the show calls him a crime lord, but he's more of an anti-crime lord. He does nothing but ask all the other syndicates to pretty-please stop doing drugs. I don't even care about Boba Fett that much in the first place, but this guy is just pathetic and a pain to watch.
@zachhecita
@zachhecita 7 ай бұрын
You're right. Why doesn't Boba Fett use his fortune to fortify his position? And the troops he does have, with a few exceptions, are quite pathetic for someone of Fett's reputation. What if Boba Fett’s faction was actually formidable? I like the cadre of elite fighters in the show that form his inner circle like Fennec and Black Krrsantan. The rancor was also a nice addition to Fett's arsenal. However, a crime boss needs an army to hold power. He should have far more Gamorrean guards and other mercenaries, that were left over from the previous daimyo. He would also have a few skiffs and starships. The Mods are the only thing that I would replace. Imagine a fearsome biker gang, that combined the Mods and the Kintan Striders into one faction. Each bike would be armed to the teeth (maybe some of the bikes have shark teeth decals to donate a more aggressive style).The bikers, themselves, would have cybernetic implants that made them more dangerous in battle. Flamethrowers, vibroblades, tasers - these cybernetics are not just for show. Fett should also have at least some ground armor, like a tank or a few land speeders. My vote goes to an AAT. With these changes, I think it would be more believable that Boba Fett could defend his territory.

This show should’ve been: A. Focused on his time between Clone Wars and A New Hope and how he became a master at Bounty Hunting, becoming as good or even better than his father before him. Or B. Focusing on him hunting down Cad Bane, planning to end one last piece of unfinished business. Throughout the series him and Cad Bane would clash until it ends with Boba killing him. Neither of these hypothetical shows would involve the story from the original Book of Boba Fett, nor will they have Tatooine be the main setting for the show.

"Star Wars is testing my faith" is one of the realist lines I've ever heard, I've felt that exact same way since I saw the Last Jedi. The sterling and inspiring nature of Star Wars has never been the same to me since. These last few years have been both devastating and tiring because I've been a Star Wars fan for my entire life. I don't want to criticize or dislike Star Wars, but as a fan I am left with no choice when they have been putting out mostly substandard content since their acquisition of Disney. Star Wars didn't used to be like this. It used to tell a solid story with endlessly creative ideas in ever corner of the universe with oringal characters coming out of the woodworks and fans loved it because it the perfect balance of new and familiar in terms of the settings, characters, and conflicts. But lately it feels like Star Wars can only rely on familiar locations, characters, and concepts in an attempt to produce as much Star Wars content as possible. It's canabilizing itself because Disney wants it to appeal to everyone. I mean just look at the content we've gotten in the last few years! The sequels visually and plot wise, are just the OT in a new set of paint. That includes the Last Jedi (which I dislike for thematically being too different) because even when some praise it for being radically different, it was still basically the plot of Empire Strikes Back. Most new Star Wars shows depend on taking a previously established character and giving them a new show even if they don't need one and they keep bringing back previously established characters just for the sake of it. Star Wars did not used to be like this. If you remember the Prequels they were producing so much content that felt wholly new yet part of the larger story. New characters, new vehicles, new planets, new factions galore! And all of it felt like it was expanding the Star Wars universe while fitting in like a glove with the Prequels. Even the Clone Wars which stared Obi-Wan and Anakin introduced new characters from day one to have something original. The Clone Wars episodes never felt arbitrary, they were exciting and you never knew what the adventure was this week. It was a great time to be a Star Wars fan and I have to imagine that's how OT fans felt when they were reading their books and comics in the 80's and 90's. Now this might sound crazy, but as a Star Wars fan, I think we have entirely *too much* mainstream Star Wars content. Disney has been trying to turn Star Wars into Marvel to make as much money as they can at the box office and to push their streaming platform. But Star Wars historically has not had that many tv shows or movies and I liked it that way. It made those limited tv and films really special. Those stories weren't just stories for the sake of it, they were excellent narratives that people talked about for years after, they had an impact. And I don't get that impact from modern Star Wars film or tv. It's content just for the sake of it. There is hype when it first comes out and then people will forget about it a few months later. It has no staying power which is something that Star Wars always used to have. Is anyone going to watch these shows in two years let alone one? I'd much rather Star Wars only release a new tv series every few years and have that show run for a long time to build a following and thus an impact like the Clone Wars originally did. As a Star Wars fan, I do not like this new philosophy of quantity over quality, I do not like it at all.

Master obiwan I felt that when they announced the Ashoka series, don't get me wrong i like Ahsoka as a character, but I felt by her apearence in rebels it was enough Ashoka and the she appears in mandalorian with was good. But like rebels introduced lots of characters that could be explored, like the freaking place that thrawn and Ezra have gone to. One of the ones that seems interesting is the Andor series because it says it explores a different side of the rebels, but i agree that more spaced products of star wars could have been more nice, i find funny that they are even doing retcons like in the EU with the extended media. Let's hope for a more better star wars someday.

Overall, great video. Agreed with all your points. Only gripe is calling Star Wars Explained an idiot. STE does something that I don't see many Star Wars KZfaqrs do: try and make sense of what's canon. Most videos (this included) typically try to point out the flaws in Star Wars, why exactly it is a flaw, and then how they could've potentially corrected it. It's easy to acknowledge something as bad and then try to make it better. It's much harder, imo, to try and defend or explain something that, no matter what, is canon to the story. Regardless of whether or not one likes STE's content, you can't deny that it takes a great deal of effort and restraint to try and make sense of a canon that just doesn't want to make sense. Both of you guys I think serve and represent great sides to the Star Wars coin: One side represents the flaws and imperfections of a franchise one held so beloved, and the possibilities to try and make it good again. While the other side accepts the franchise as a whole, just trying to enjoy the media for what it is, not what it could've been; there are other more pressing matters to worry about. Idk, maybe I'm wrong, but I just don't think it's the greatest thing to call someone and "idiot" just because they're going about viewing Star Wars differently than you

This biggest issue is that Disney has notable tendencies that have created two big clashes with what Star Wars should be. Disney doesn’t like to write stories that focus on villains, at least not villains actually acting like villains. Cruella and Maleficent were always just “misunderstood,” Wanda Maximoff was just mourning her loss and truly made a sacrifice when releasing her magic hold on that town (which somehow justifies her brainwashing, torturing, and enslaving said town for God knows how long just to live out her own selfish fantasies). The villain of Falcon and Winter Solider (whose name I can’t even remember) was portrayed as just misguided and morally just, even if she was going about getting her message across the wrong way (in reality she was literally just a psychopathic domestic terrorist). And here in Boba’s case, they refuse to allow him to be a villain. They don’t want to write these characters in the dark and aggressive ways that they should be portrayed and want to make them all have softer sides in a half assed attempt at giving them “depth.” And secondly, Disney is corporatizing everything they own now. Everything has to have 90 billion spin-offs, everything has to be “content” rather than what it should be, which is art. Star Wars was a work of art by one man with a vision, that others with similar ideas and great talent have expanded upon over the years. But when you let a corporation dictate everything rather than the creative talents who deserve to have control, you get things like the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy and Book of Boba Fett. Just products to be sold, not quality storytelling to entertain and intrigue us, the audience. We’re just customers to them, and they know it doesn’t take much to win us over into consuming what they put out, so at this point they usually don’t even bother to make anything worthwhile anymore.

I really think The Mandalorian WAS Boba Fett earlier in its development, since it conveniently got picked up at Disney+’s centrepiece launch tv show after the Boba Fett spin-off movie got cancelled. But imagine The Mandalorian with Boba Fett in the lead role from the beginning, and you have a really fresh and satisfying character arc worthy of Boba Fett, especially if he finds himself caring for Grogu AND meeting Luke Skywalker … and realizing for himself how far he has come since they last crossed paths. Instead…. Din Djarin is an up & coming Mandalorian bounty Hunter who has never heard of The Most Notorious Bounty Hunter In The Galaxy?! The least they could have done is show how Fett’s career would have greatly influenced Djarin, or at least have Djarin doubting Boba Fett’s identity when they meet. Fett’s one big action scene looks cheap and slapstick, and it set expectations for something really great in the finalé, but all he does is drive the getaway car and then duck out before plugging his own series with the dullest, most uninspired premise for Fett to slog through.

Boba has basically been "Jake Skywalker'd". I think a good example what BOB could have been, is the SW Bounty Hunter game from 2002.

The funny part is, I think they could’ve mixed Boba’s old ways in with some kind of newly found code and honor, but they butchered that as well. They show him getting close to the Tuskens, and then by the end of the show he is all about the people of Mos Espa. He never interacts in a meaningful way with anyone in Mos Espa (asides from the cringey mods who walk all over him), and a majority of his “soldiers” are generic citizens from a town miles and miles away that he also never even met! Add that in with the pathetically stupid story, laughable action sequences, and neutered nostalgia characters, and you get a show that misses the mark in almost every way. They disrespect the titular character and tell a boring story that spends almost a third of its time focused on characters from other shows.

We were screwed from the jump because Din Djarin is Boba Fett. He keeps his helmet on, barely speaks and dislikes other people. Oh and he hunts bounties. Then they decided to bring in the “real” Boba and realized that they’d already turned Din into Boba and panicked.

'Book of Boba Fett' was ALMOST an awesome show. If he wasn't such a low energy sap who has lost his edge, if he hadn't relied on Mando, Fennec Shand and a bunch of emo Vesper teenagers to save his ass and if they hadn't shoehorned two episodes of The Mandalorian into the end of the series, it could have been epic. He needed to be a total badass, needed to do all his own dirty work and annihilate all his enemies with an utterly ruthless coup de grâce that no one saw coming ... above all, he needed to keep his damn helmet ON. He came across like he was a rookie hired muscle, not the seasoned master hunter that we have come to expect over the last 40 years and he submitted to the authority of everybody with whom he dealt. I think that if he gets another season, (which he probably SHOULDN'T, based on the first season), he should be betrayed by Fennec Shand, who sees the weakness that we have all seen and Boba ... the REAL Boba ... just blind sides her like he knew what she was up to all along. He needs to be brutal, cold, calculating and above all SELF RELIANT. Boba Fett from the Book of BF was just a pussy and needed to be thrown back into the Sarlacc pit. What a pathetic way to destroy an iconic character.

Your teacher isn't wrong about the Mandalorian. A show that's pretty much all video game side quests as plots. The main character having literal plot armour and the constant reliance on Nostalgia and name recognition call outs including Cartoon characters isn't a great show. While the took mocking there own villains to new heights with Stormtroopers dying by rolling rock that's straight out of Road Runner and running into rolling bombs !

Excellent analysis of a favorite character of mine, to which I also agree. BoBF was a huge let down and down right character assassination. This "arc" did not suit Fett in the slightest, his character is best explained by a quite I heard of. "Dinn Djarin is a Gunslinger." "Boba Fett is a Barbarian."

I got the feeling that quite a number of people put too much blame on Morrison. Yes, he did seem lost in regards to acting out the character but like... who was he even supposed to be? No wonder he couldn't put his abilities to good use. He was fantastic in TM. The idea with the Tuskens and him wanting something else than just being a bounty hunter after nearly dying that horribly could've made sense. It could've been a great story. In legends, after he survives, he led remnants of old, true Mandalorians. Like his father once did but tragically failed at. Not only stepping in the footsteps of Jango but bascially redeeming his past failures. Yet, he was still old, cold, ruthless Boba. But wiser, less aggressive and more content with his place in the galaxy. Even had a wife and a daughter. They could've given him a clan in the show aswell. The Tuskens. They too are ancient warriors, a dying race. Like the Mandalorians. But they threw that out of the window as fast they could just to give him... like... a gang consisting of maybe ten guys at best. Wow, perfect crew for a crime lord. Or should I only say "lord" because they really made it a point that there should be no crime.

Exactly. I genuinely don't get why The Manalorian stars Din Djarin instead of just cutting out the pretense and being about Boba Fett. They wouldn't even have to have changed much of anything, since they de-canonised the EU the only appearances they had to keep Boba consistent with were in the OT and TCW.

I always felt Boba should have taken a antagonist or mentor role in the Mandolorian, and stayed a supporting character. When they teased him all the way back in Mando season 1 I thought that maybe he was sent to hunt down mando and the kid. Nope, he just wanted his armor and then we got the boring crap we have now. It would have been so cool to see the characters go from impersonal rivals to garnering a mutual professional respect.

Hello, Typoh! I really enjoyed this video and share your view on Boba Fett. Ever since the Mandalorian Season 2 came out I was watching opinion videos about it, but you were the only one who mentioned that s2e5 looked like a fan film. That was my impression as well. So watching this video showed me that I am not the only one who has or sees those issues with the new Star Wars.

Even though I’m a causal fan of Star Wars, I enjoyed the first 6 episodes and despise the sequel trilogy, I must say, I enjoyed this video quite a lot. It gave me a true perspective on what Boba Fett is all about! Not to toot my own horn but I have a character who would be a better crime lord than the show’s version of Boba Fett. Can’t wait to see what you’ll come out with next!!

Great video, imagine if they would have made Boba intimidating and in the mandalorian Third season finale someone pay Boba to hunt Grogu and they have a cool battle and clash their ideology Especially if they made it more like Boba Hunt Mando in some swamp planet (or everything that isn't a desert) to create more tense situation, well more than a battle face to face that last like 2 minutes and end unsatisfactory... I'm looking at Cad Bane of course

To include the clone wars lore, seeing him develop through his childhood is interesting and the length he went to get vengeance on obi-wan was great to see. So you’re telling me from the age of a kid to his teens was a better story line of his in the show. And now he’s just some clown as an older man who suddenly decides to be a saint is a big hell fuckin no.

Very well done, very well done! You tackled all points on why they show doesn’t work, why the people defending it do a poor job because it honestly can’t be defended because the story is all over the place and the motivation was not made clear (also extra points on calling out SWE, that channel turned to garbage ever since Disney bought SW, now days they are just shills.). This show was a mess from start to finish, and it shows that not even fanservice can save such mess (specially when the fanservice is so obvious and over the top).
