Hi Mackenzie! Great question. First, you can put your mind at ease because no damage has ever occurred to a cake because of the center rod. We designed the CakeSafe so it meticulously protects your cakes and won't harm it. The center rod is very sharp and you insert it with a quick and hard push. It cuts cleanly through all your tiers, the cardboard between tiers, and your cake drum as long as it's made from foamcore or cardboard and is 1/2" thick or thinner. The CakeSafe comes with full directions on how to use it with any material cake drum or base.
