We have all had moments in our lives where we were more awkward than we would like to be, and we have all had moments where we surprised ourselves with how charming, charismatic and confident we can be. The questions is: how do we go from one to the other on command?
I think that Elon Musk is a great example of someone that represents the best of both worlds. That's why in this video, I want to dive into some clips of Elon to see what you can learn, and how to turn those moments where you are awkward and turn them into ones where you are charming and charismatic.
⏰TIMESTAMPS⏰

Turn awkwardness into charisma: 1)Eloborate the question 2)Make consistent eye contact while talking. 3)Crack an understandable joke. 4)Embrace the silence in awkward situations. 5)Warm up yourself before the interaction and it will be much smoother. 6)Fully Commit. This is key when telling stories,playing a character or dancing.

He's really not even that awkward. They make him look far more awkward than he is by cutting a few second clips out of hours of time and stacking them together. If you actually watched any of those interviews in full, his awkward level would be more like a 3, whereas the "cringe compilation" makes it seem like he's a 10. Sure, he's not as smooth as Jobs, or Russell Brand, but he's okay....

In the Rogan interview, he's looking down because he's remembering a really hard year. It looks like he's still emotionally processing it. People don't have to make eye contact all the time they are talking, it's only human to sometimes withdraw into yourself when considering emotional subjects.

This is Just my opinion. People admire his competence, intelligence, and the fact that he is a self-built engineer turned businessman who has"F- You money" and can do what he deems to be worth his time. I think Elon's awkwardness is a genuine and loveable part of his persona. I loved the Joe Rogan interview when he was that somber reflective person, it was as if he was showcasing his inner thought process. Apart from that, I feel like Elon has these slow start ups because when someone says something like "can you talk about ai?" his brain immediately floods with 1 million things about the topic and he needs to straighten out that flow of thought.

I have Aspergers and I’ve always wished a cool nerotypical person could talk about this stuff and this really helps me understand. That said, I’d love to eventually see some videos where you could elaborate more on why neurotypicals behave with certain social rules. For example, eye contact = good but why? Sometimes there’s an answer and sometimes there’s not but I always appreciate whatever info you have to offer.
@Itz_Hyde
@Itz_Hyde 3 жыл бұрын
A lot of the behaviours of neurotypical people are picked up from their families and peers throughout their childhood and adolescent years. This type of learning is most apparent, ironically, in neurotypical kids who don't get the normal levels of social interactions with their family and peers. It results in their social anxiety as a result of missing the boat in terms of developing those skills and therefore not being able to naturally interact with those around them when they reach adulthood. As a person with Asperger's, your brain processes information differently to a neurotypical person which can hamper your ability to learn from others. Its a common trait for those with autism to fixate on certain topics, so it maybe that you fixate on the words spoken in a conversation and miss the body language used by others or inflections in the spoken words themselves. I hope you aren't worried to much as, ultimately, a channel like this is only as successful as it is because lots of normal people also have lots to improve upon when it comes to social interaction.

@OrdonWolf
@OrdonWolf 3 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean, there aren't enough explanations out there but for the eye contact thing at least I can make some guesses: facial expressions make up much of a person's body language so eye contact tells the other person "I'm listening to you(r face)". Basically it shows them you are interested. I'm not very good at eye contact personally because 90% of people I talk to I'm not really interested in and I do a poor job at hiding that lol
@Doubleranged1
@Doubleranged1 3 жыл бұрын
I have aspergers aswell and I can give you a trick for the eye contact. Whenever you have to think, or are focused, you probably don't maintain eye contact as it gives you too much information to process. In those instances, just ignore the other person and don't worry about eye contact. Then when it is the other persons "turn" and you listen: then make eye contact. Try to only focus on what they are saying and the sound it has. Try not to think ahead about what they say, but instead give your full attention. And give people the time to fully finish their part. If you make eye contact during this, it works and it is easier to do.
@Doubleranged1
@Doubleranged1 3 жыл бұрын
Ugh noticed my reply was really messy. When you talk/think: don't worry about eye contact. When they talk: give full attention and don't think ahead. You'll start looking at their faces automatically.

For an introvert professional it is hard to start speak about themes without sounding arrogant. Especially in front of a big group. Being too smart in a tech field is hell when it comes to explaining those in front of ppl who not even understand basic lingo. It is just super awkward. Everything I say in these situations sounds harsh. But I also teach and my students get me, because they have interest and they ask without judgment. 1:47 I found that interview sincere and therefore engaging. It had contents and not all form. I felt like I got to see behind a public figure's persona, and into their private struggles. Granted, Musk was stylizing the "Tortured Genius" role, but still... It's one of the Rogan interviews I've enjoyed the most. I'm very surprised CoC would use it as an example of low charisma. Perhaps I have a different perspective as a European. I love America, but you have a taste for a fast pace and showmanship that many other countries think takes away from sincerity and depth. You also worship extroversion, and I think that comes into play in how CoC views this interview. Musk is perhaps a little introverted. He's introspective and sharing his thoughts and feelings. America isn't really _about_ _that,_ as you say.

i'm the most socially awkward person i've ever met, so being anything close to the opposite would be too much of a challenge i think, but i'll try and keep these suggestions in mind for the future. not the dancing or playing a character though lol, i can't dance or act to save my life lol

I'm enjoying your videos. May I offer a suggestion of processing your audio better. It's so low in volume that commercials boom in and you are so soft. Just like the clips you use. Do a little research and testing to get it raised and a little more balanced for lows/highs. Thanks.
