I hated knee pads in days of old personally for all reasons you just mentioned. I'm over 50 now and knees are shot to bits, I used cardboard, packaging, foam, anything I could lay my hands on to use for a kneeling pad but eventually the poor old knees took their toll. The latter part of my working life companies issued them stupid foam pads that you force into knee pockets of work trousers that were absolutely crap. I have had a 2" peice of white firm package foam handy now for my kneeling, I just can't kneel straight onto a hard floor any more. The younger trades folk should heed this advice and start protecting their knees, the sooner the better. How about a lecture on our backs next Roger, and I don't mean a video of you laying on your bed. I bet I'm not the only one that has constant back pains now from the years on sites. 👍👍👍

Knees, back, neck and shoulder. I work as an osteopath and see my fair share of trades. Anyone working above head height for long periods has a good chance of getting neck and shoulder problems, anyone working below chest height is going to get knee and back. Then you got the poor brickie who's thumb will give in after 15-20 years unless they are genetically blessed.

When you add 1/2 inch hight to your knees, you need to arch the back further towards the floor.. longer term,this is more painful and debilitating than knee problems .

The older blokes I work with reckon I look like a right wolly in my ppe. But i reckon they look worse when they get out the vans in the mornings like the walking dead. It's mad. I'm 32. They're mid/late 50s and are all absolutely buggered physically coz they've been too "cool" to wear basic ppe. Or too tight to buy it.

My main trade is plumbing. I’ve tried all different types of knee pads and I find the straps just dig into the back of my legs or the pads just fall down etc. I just use a memory foam pillow, works a treat. I wrapped cellophane around it to keep it water proof as much as possible. It’s really comfortable.
@tilerman
@tilerman 2 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you. I've tried all sorts of knee pads, and as you mentioned, the straps digging into the back of your knees is just to uncomfortable. I've tried trousers with built in pads but i've got very long legs and the pads are in the wrong position and don't line up with my knees. And like you, i just use a piece of foam which i put inside a rubble sack and cover in silver gaffer tape. So so comfortable.

@@tilerman that’s right, wish I did this years ago when I was young but was stupid and got embarrassed about using a cushion on site. People say it’s a pain trying to carry it around but it’s more of a pain when you can’t walk properly.

Been in the plumbing & heating game all my life since leaving school , I'm 61 now and my knees are knackerd , my back is knackerd and my ankles too , every time I have to kneel down for more than a few minutes I need something next to me like a hammer so that I can use it to help me to push myself up again , it's got to the stage now that I'm going to give it up this year and try and find some type of work that does not involve kneeling in any way.... as for the kneepads , I've worn them everyday for about the last 20 years when I started getting problems with my knees but maybe the damage was already done but they helped prolong my career up until now , my advice to any youngsters starting out is get your knees protected the best you can while your still able too and these toughbuilt pads look like they will help immensely. cheers Roger.... 👍

I'm a Bosun on superyachts, I'm on and off my knees all the time, its starting to show, several older deckhands have messed up kness and after a recent problem I am now a lot more careful. These kneepads look like they are worth a go. I've used some that did into the back of your leg really badly and it does mean you don't wear them as often as you should.

Felt fixer (Flat roofer) for years. In that job kneepads are considered a consumable. Best I found were the Nailers Kneepads (toolstation), but they had to be modified with some 1 inch thick elastic from amazon. Now I wear those 35 quid snickers ones for floor layers and even that's only because it looks better for going into peoples houses (doing different stuff now) Nice Toughbuilt have put some product design and marketing behind this, though there are other directions to go with these as well. Might give them a shot at some point 😁

Best ones I've found are light weight gel knee pads by Vitrex. Light so don't have to do the straps tight and stop the circulation. That said minimise the time in use and try to think of another way of doing the job if possible. Trousers with flexibility also helps. Would be interesting to try those toughbuilts.

Hi Roger Something I’ve been banging on about for years , of course in my early days there was very little available except as you say the type that were just to uncomfortable. But today there really is no excuse , even the type that fit into pockets in the work gear can go a long way to prevent future problems. Ironically I’m having new PVC windows fitted, and not one of the lads has knee protection . And yes I have given my hard leant advice , but was met with all sorts of excuses including it’s no good if you were shorts bless them. I suppose when we’re young we think we’re indestructible , but sadly over time we find out often to late we are very far from it . Ps you still see a lot of trades not wearing dust masks or in fact any PPE at all . But thanks to trade Ambassadors such as your good self the message will get through , if you can prevent just one person becoming debilitated later on in life . Then you can give your self a big pat on the back . Best wishes and kind regards as always. 😀👍👍👍

In the 80s I used to wear miners knee pads. Even wearing them didn't stop me getting arthritis of the knees. I am now awaiting the first of two knee replacements. To any young tradesmen. I've used knee pads from day one as the joiner I did my apprenticeship with said to as he already had surgery on one knee before he was in his 40s and had the other done at a later age. I've ways used knee inserts with work wear trousers as youve always got them. At the moment Im using the snickers floor layers inserts which are very comfy. I'll definitely give these a go though as the straps pinching behind the knee was my biggest problem with alot of knee pads.

Knees kill when getting up but now wear DeWalt trousers when doing basic DIY round the house and just use the foam pads inside the knee slip. Feels so much better on the knees & fairly cheap. 25 years by registering your purchase. @@SkillBuilder I mean in terms of if you're getting up and down, like in a rewire for example. If you're stationary in one area, they are nice pads. Perfect for flooring guys. Not so much for sparks.

I think a lot of it depends on your constitution as well. I have legs and knees built for athletics. Slim, narrow ankles and wrists. I’m 34 and can feel my knees creaking but thankfully still okay. The guys I see on site with the worst knees are the top heavy guys with a beer belly. Personally I think the best thing you can do for your knees, even better than knee pads, is to not get top heavy.

Max, irrespective of your body shape it I would say the overriding factor is how much punishment you put your knees through up until the point they are 'shot'. I had your physique and was athletic in my youth but my knees are still shot. For me it was a combination of manual labour and running up mountains and endurance running.

Do I spot velcro. If I do they will not last. Why do manufacturers always go for velcro straps? They just don't last. So it doesn't matter how good the pads are if they end up just falling off your legs.

I'm guessing it's because straps dig in, so need to be slim and soft.

Good vid rog as usual but reckon getting the point home to youngsters coming in to the building industry about the importance-of wearing knee protection is just as relevant as the type worn I never wore them when I was younger and man am I suffering now knees almost permanently strapped up now and I’ve got a plumber friend who did the same for years who’s now had to have both knees replaced when ur young u just think ur invincible and u won’t have these problems later on but alas we do prevention is better than cure if u ask me

As a spread my knees are ok, however my wrists, lower back and now tennis elbow issues are regularly defeating me at just 40.. anyone who doesn’t look after their own body is a mug, the damage and intermittent pain isn’t worth the money I was paid. I wear my ppe, but there’s nothing to save joints apart from the introduction of speed skims..
