The amount of suffering in the world is vast, so observed Schopenhauer. Life is a constant striving, a relentless pursuit of desires and needs that keep appearing. So it’s no surprise that people label this philosopher ‘pessimistic’ and ‘dark.’ But his observations aren’t unfounded.

I agree with Arthur Schopenhauer. Life just sucks. It's painful in many ways and he understood that. He didn't sugarcoat anything, he told it as it was. None of us asked to be here, and sometimes I wish I wasn't.

Pain yes, boredom never. I have faith in joy, to balance the pain, which leaves me in the centre (call it ‘the Middle Way’…), and if we can live out of our centre (heart, soul, spirit…) we live in peace; in love. This is the realism AS points towards.

Life is a forced existence. I didn't ask to be created. But I were created by my parents, for whatever reason. A life filled with loneliness and depression, that's what it resulted in, because of my absent and emotionally unavailable parents. I don't want to have my own kids, sex and marriage. But that makes it hard to find a partner. To bring another life into this world is a forced existence. A punishment for whatever reasons unknown.

Schopenhauer to me is a very practical philosopher. He tells it how it is and doesn't sugar coat life or take the leap of faith as so many other philosophers do. I live my life to try to minamlize pain while prolonging pleasure. For instance i don't waste any time in the morning checking my phone or socials as that creates anxiety but instead get too it right away, get my hiking gear on and take my dog for a long hike in. Contrast that to staying in bed and death scrolling for an hour. I try to live my life in that manner. Making pleasure efficiently attainable whilst minamlizing the pain.

The human experience is marked by suffering due to the fact that we have the will, the ambition and the desire of an immortal, all knowing and all powerful being. Yet, we are mortal, know a small amount compared to everything that exists and have little power over the universe. No doubt dissapointment is a constant, and the strain caused by the disparity between desire and reality is so intense. Overall, Schopenhaur seems to have found a great, if not the best, way to experience life. By reducing our desires to levels more easy to obtain we can reduce the forementioned strain of existence.

When you consider conscious life on this planet as a whole which includes human and non-human animals, the conscious suffering which exists clearly outweighs the non-suffering hence why it should all end. For example, assuming that lions and gazelles are sentient beings which I believe they are who can suffer, a lion who experiences stomach pains because it has not eaten in days is suffering. A gazelle who runs in fear and then gets its neck snapped by a lion is suffering. That is just one example of suffering which exists every single day and the only way to stop it is to end their lives, peacefully if possible. So with all things considered, it makes logical sense to end all life on this planet in order to prevent more suffering.

I wouldn’t call it pessimistic. It’s more about no one wants to hear how the world truly is. My earliest memories are from my kindergarten time. I was put in a corner with funny little toys and told to wait till my family will pick me up in the afternoon. I still can remember my thoughts like it was yesterday: „So. That’s what they call life. It’s feeling alien. I don’t want to be here. I don’t want to spend my time playing with toys. Isn’t there anything else…“ Later in life I noticed the same. Family’s birthday party’s came and went. Same boring talks year after year. Birthday after birthday. People got older. Many of them died already. No one of them has achieved anything. Can we achieve anything in a mortal life? Can we achieve anything in an eternal life. Which one would me more frightful? 🫣 What a mess. I will try my best. But I will be really happy when an end of this absurdity arrives. Maybe it will be accompanied by fear. But deep inside I know I will be the luckiest I have ever been.

When I first heard Schopenhauer was a "pessimist", I was quite surprised. I thought he was an optimist. I still believe that and I'm taken aback every time I hear it said he's a pessimist. Schopenhauer explains how life is, and what one can do to engineer one's life to make it successful, or perhaps, to more easily breeze through life. For me, what he says about life is true, I don't see that as pessimism, but fact. And his remedies are just common sense. Wisdom of Life is one of my favorite all time reads.

Bleak but realistic Shope for Pope! I find his reasoning so easy to follow. It tells it like it is and doesn’t lie that this world is wonderful. I think it sucks but we have no choice but to limit the pain cause it’s ALWAYS there. His thoughts and writings resonate throughout my life. Life truly sucks. As Wesley said in the Princess Bride “ life is pain… anyone who says it isn’t is trying to sell you something “. Wesley was a genius. I wonder if he read a lot of Shope while pirating for 5 years?

I have come to this video because that is how I think about life. How many of us live under an illusion of choice. Reality is we work to survive with little time to have for ourselves. We make efforts to please people, let it be for keeping your job or your clients. We are trapped in a loop of inflation and interest rises, that offsets our hard effort and savings. We face peer pressure from different circles, and constantly strive to do better. Comparisons with people are deadly. For the guys, we meet girls who've probably been banged dozens of times. You're just another guy who she thinks she can manipulate. For those who become successful, congratulations. When your time is up and on your death bed, family members will circulate you like sharks for your processions and inheritance. Such is the mother nature of life.

Schopenhauer philosophy is considered dark and pessmistic, and it is, but, odd enough, when I first read 'The World as Will and Representation', this book turned out to be very inspirational for me. And now this book is one of the main books of my life. This is because during reading 'The World as Will and Representation' I was focused not on the pessimism of Herr Arthur, which seemed for me to be not well founded, but rather on key statements which for me were the most important. 1) The world is the free Will. For me, it is the best explanation of what the world is and why it exists. On the one hand, this statement doesn't involve any supernatural, separated from the world and unknowable existence like God. On the other hand, the world still has it's purpose, it's goal - it exists... to exist. Existence is meaningful, because every living subject, every particle, every single grain of sand is full of movement the goal for which is existence. This is much better than materialistic approach, which tells us that any 'goal' is some kind of illusion created by electrons and chemicals in one's brain and that the world exists for nothing. 2) The Subject is equal to the Object. There is a materialistic view, which tells that any subject is just kind of illusion created by electrons and chemicals in one's brain. Materialists sometimes argue that subject doesn't even exist. But how am I supposed to receive the answer how I should behave, what I should do, what kind of life I should live, if my philosophy tells me that I don't exist at all?! Also all we know that if there is some information, it is subjective. Source of the information is always subjective experience. There is no any means to obtain information about the Object without the Subject or prove the Object's existence independent on the Subject. So, it is some of natural to believe that the Subject is equal to the Object and both exist simultaneously. There is more: the idea of one Subject and also the well founded ethic system. Of course, Schopenhauer's magnus opus is quite old and the lack of scientific knowledge of the 21st century sometimes feels during the reading. Even Darwin's theory of evolution wasn't yet developed the time Herr Arthur wrote his main work. So, there are many statements which are incompatible with modern science. However in its core this philosophy is genius.
