30:48 I've experienced this while I earning my scuba diving license, but I didn't know it actually had a name. To earn my license, I was scuba diving with a group in a flooded quarry. We were in northern Ohio halfway through spring, and the water was absolutely freezing. One of the requirements for the license was to take my mask off around 10-15ft underwater, put it back on and clear it of water. First I had to take off one glove which instantly made my entire hand feel numb, and then when I pulled my mask off the rush of cold water on my face made me start gasping for air. I felt like I was choking, and while I wasn't necessarily scarred at the time, it was easily the most uncomfortable I've felt in my entire life, as I was deprived of all my senses. After I got my mask back on I signaled to the group to surface because I just needed a minute to calm down. Looking back it was pretty scary since I was 15 at the time, but all in all I was safe with the group.

I used to be part of my schools rowing club. We had this tradition we called "baptism" for new kids. 4 people, your "godparents", would grab your arms and legs, pick you up and tell you their names. Then they'd throw you into the river. As soon as you came up to the surface, you had to scream their names. It doesn't sound too hard, so most people were really confident they can do it. But the cold water shocks your brain, makes it harder to remember the names and it's so hard to breath, yelling them loud enough is almost impossible the first time.

Every movie like this, with 2 criminal brothers, always have the same plot. One is always a deranged killer, while the other is a petty criminal that values life. The ‘good’ brother is always accidentally killed by the ‘bad’ brother. The bad brother always blames the death on the protagonist and goes into ‘super deranged killer’ mode because of it.

You don't even need to finish them off if you can't bring yourself to do it, if you break their legs and hands they won't be able to chase you or effectively attack you. The absolute bare minimum you should do, is disable their ability to kill you as much as possible, but I guess if they did that in movies, they wouldn't be more than 15 or 20 minutes long. Much less related, the divorce rate has never actually been that high, it is usually only around 25-35%, even at it's peak it only reached 45% or 46%.

I think the reason that trope exists is because the movie would simply end too early if they did that, but it also works as a sort of realism factor (for lack of better words). It's realistic to believe that a majority of these horror movie victims would not want to kill these attackers. Someone else in these comments said it better than I could but people tend to have a aversion to this type of stuff or are repulsed by gore. And it's believable that in this case, a woman with no survive training, little to no muscle, and just getting our of an abusive relationship wouldn't want to/think about killing her attackers, especially if one of them is someone who caused her to have PTSD. I know personally I'd be unable to kill my attackers as I would be left unable to even think about anything other than trying to escape because of panic. And also I just wouldn't be able to bring myself to kill someone.

As someone who has been seriously injured multiple times in their life by lacerations from broken glass, AND as someone who watched the excellent Mike Flanagan/Stephen King movie Gerald's Game on Netflix, the second she retrieved her phone from that giant fancy vase full of roses and didnt try and break that to make a glass shiv and cut his goddamn hand of by the wrist tendons and sinews, I kinda half checked out of the movie. I love that they rian johnson'd our expectations about her running around in a symbolic bloody wedding dress the whole movie, but AHH even if he got some shitty cheap roses that come in a plastic vase, there's still all the windows! Break any single thing made of glass in the whole damn place, and then deli slice his damn hand off, girl. You're Jennifer Czech, we expect better from you!
@Liverator
@Liverator 2 жыл бұрын
To be fair, she wouldn’t have much luck trying to break those windows. The windows of typical houses are usually double-paned, and that interior layer is hard as hell to crack open. I learned this the hard way when trying to break into my own house after getting locked out. First pane came off easy when struck with a rock the size of a football. The only crack coming from the second one was an audible one, not a physical one. And if you need something better than a big ass rock to break the window, you’d do better using that thing than the glass. In all fairness, upstairs windows are not always double-paned, since they won’t be beholden to the same stress as downstairs windows, but that means having to drag the body upstairs again. She could also technically try to break the exterior pane, but the house is lifted off the ground slightly, so she’d have to somehow do it one handed since her other arm wouldn’t be able to reach that high on account of the handcuffs. But as for why she didn’t put his thumb under the leg of any kind of furniture (chair, bed, table) and proceed to plop down on it to force the leg to break his thumb, I have no idea.

Like it was said in the video she has some super human abilities. In the scene where she and the guy with the knife are on the ice it is established that it takes their combined weight to break into it. Then a few seconds later she slices through the ice while under water. Unable to use her full weight or any kind of leverage while wounded and in freezing ice she sliced through 3 inch thick ice. Then she just hangs out on the surface drenched. Instantly broke my immersion, she had no way out of that unless she is Wonder Woman's lost sister.

11:16 She could also use her own weight to try and break his hand. Leaning all her weight one foot, jumping, then thrusting her heel into his hand on the way down. Actually; Silk can actually be a good material for insulating body heat. Whilst it's naturally cool to the touch, it can (and does) regulate to the bodies temperature, like most natural fibers. Silk is also quite durable and wicks away moisture from the body, rather than absorbing it, allowing you stay warm. The thing that should be taken into account is the weave of the silk and the weight of the fabric (ie. how thick it is). Things like this determine not only how durable it can be, but it's insulating qualities.

While there's no faults in the logic that you could kill the attackers while they're unconscious, I believe it would've been nice to hear better options of crippling them instead. Killing someone is a tall order, even in a life or death situation. This is why the Trolley Problem has so many people who do nothing at all when they could ideally save more lives by choosing one person to die rather than allow multiple to be run over. Breaking one of his kneecaps would've prevented him from following her swiftly, yet would allow him to slowly get to other places so that he doesn't die as a direct result of your actions. Had she just broken one of his kneecaps, she would've had more than enough time to steal his keys, get to the car, and drive off. Since the other car had a flat tire, was heavier, and trapped by one of the other two vehicles, it's unlikely he would've been able to keep up with her escape in a better conditioned car. RIP Jim, actually less of a jerk than Mark.

Instead of divorcing him (or just not marrying him in the first place) she cheats on her partner, which alone is already bad, but also makes her look stupid with how dangerous he is. She ignores all the crimson red flags that he knows and is planning something. Once she’s handcuffed to a body it would have been way easier to break his hand than drag him around the house *and icy way to the car.* She has both her attackers at her mercy yet still almost dies because of her own stupidity! There’s so much more but you get the gist of it. Not like the villains were much better with how often the plot needs to bail her out...
