It's been theorized in another video about this movie that calvin retains what he ingests, including knowledge. Basically the more living creatures it eats, the more intelligent it becomes. Once it ate the engineer for the station, they were pretty much screwed cause it gained all his knowledge about how the inner workings of the station worked.

The problem with a lot of space horror movies like these is that they don’t understand exactly how smart, clever, and capable astronauts actually are. I live in Houston, Texas, and I have met actual astronauts. Each of them typically have the fitness of track-team members combined with the intelligence of multiple STEM professors crammed into their heads. They are literally chosen for their aptitudes for making smart choices and tough decisions in split-second, life-or-death scenarios. They are the most badass nerds you will ever come across, and there is no way in Heaven these characters add up to even a fraction of what a real astronaut is capable of.

This movie annoyed me a lot when i saw it ( i really dislike negative endings that feels unfair) because the alien was 20% dangerous and 80% extremely lucky. I'm not an engineer but i really feels that a couple of moments don't make sense: 1)the way the laboratory works (the valves etc) doesn't make any sense, that's a place that clearly should be possible to completely separate with one button if necessary. 2)once Calvin was in space i'm pretty sure there was no way it could actually go back inside the space station, it could have entered the nozzle but i still can't understand how it managed to get inside where humans are...may be i'm missing something but it doesn't make sense to me. The problem is that i'm ready to forgive stupid stuff in a movie like Alien because they are basically space truckers while in this movie the protagonist are astronauts so they are supposed to be some of the most competent men and women on the planet.

Honestly this movie annoyed me to no end with its biology Yes, I am not biologist myself, but the biology in this movie is absolutely insane The whole "every cell is a muscle, brain and a sensory organ" is so stupid. It would not make it extremely powerful, it would make it extremely hungry because sustaining all of that would be nigh impossible, and it also wouldn't make it more powerful than specialized cells And yes, the engineering issues are also incredible. The fact that you can get from a laboratory to anywhere in the ship is so dumb. The laboratory should be it's own separated system capable of being thrown out into the void of the universe in case of, well, anything going wrong. They are quite literally dealing with another form of life. As far as they know there is a possibility that Mars being nowadays a dead planet is the result of that lifeform but they play with it like it's a friendly doggo

What wasn't mentioned specifically in this video is Calvin was never inherently hostile. It only posed a threat once a threat was presented to it. @HateshWarkio

Or it wasn't hostile in the beginning because it was too weak and by the logic of the movie, also too stupid Since every cell is a brain cell for Calvin it means that when it was small it was dumb and probably not aware but as it grew it started to understand its own strength and became more and more aware and intelligent At the end it was even capable of understanding David's intentions

I like how after realizing its cells were durable enough to withstand burning and whatnot, they never attempt to harm/kill it using physical trauma, e,g: jamming a sharp object (such as a scalpel) through its skull or cutting off its tentacles/wings. There were two perfect opportunities to test it; when it was feeding on the dude's leg and when it was busy hugging the oxygen candle(s), leaving its head fully exposed. I imagine its body like a thick, durable rubber - hard to burn, damage, etc, but easy to cut open and tear once you've compromised its structural integrity.

Given that it doesnt have bones or a organs and is just multipurpose cell goo, blunt force likely doesnt do much of anything. Cutting it (if you managed) could at worst separate it into two living beings. Calvin can survive IMMENSE pressure. Force is really not the way to go. Oxygen manipulation and cell deteoriorating with outrageous radiation or injections or cell destroying liquids are really the only ways to go about it.

The major flaw with this movie is all the characters want to save the person Calvin goes after. Nobody on the station had the balls to say "F that guy!" and kill them along with Calvin. They needed to realize once Calvin got one of them that person was already dead. The second Calvin exited the glove that section of the station should have been quarantined and separated. Also the gloves were just thin rubber. Anything could puncture them. They should have been using ones mude out of the same material as their space suits to protect them from radiation. Calvin could completely crush every bone in a hand by squeezing. He had a strong sharp edged broken object, likely carbon glass. It's not about the gloves. Not to mention, when the thing youre studuying was meant to be the size and intelligence of a dustmite when designing the box, you dont design something intended for poking a damn jaguar. They didnt know it would grow, certainly had NO WAY to anticipate it could use instruments or even become prehensile. The box is designed with the scientist handling a tiny being in mind, ergo, gloves that are tough and thick but allow use of small instruments and fine motor movement.

I think the biggest science plot hole is that (I assume) it would take a lot more energy than it had available when small to grasp things tightly. It's also just not clear that there's any real way to convert 100% of food to new cells. But I do love the idea of a solid mass of identical cells. The worst impact an attacker could do to it is kill some cells and they'd just immediately be ejected by the thing or eaten.

While I enjoyed the movie, it still felt rather dumb. The setup to experiment with Calvin felt rather halfassed. The moment he showed being able to move, his box should have been sealed the moment he started moving, it was designed to contain a potential biohazard, not to contain an animal. They could have easily stopped giving it food and oxygen. It hybernated for who knows how many million years on Mars without food or oxygen, so stopping the experiment and waiting for a lab that is better suited to deal with something that could potentially move and attack was no problem. The risk of them loosing Calvin was rather low. That they were concerned about Calvin having died due to the accident in the beginning of the movie was especially stupid, because again, the inital cell they had hybernated on the hostile environment on Mars for a long time.

Like Jack Black dying in The Jackal or in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, he's so zany and lighthearted but then he's in a scene where someone stabs him with an ice pick while he's crying like a baby and it just tugs at you more because of the actor themselves and not necessarily the character they play. Not sure if other people get that feeling. Like I support comedy actors not being typecast, and branching out. Just saying it's a little rough to see XD hopefully that makes sense.

I understand that perspective. You get so used to seeing an actor in one context that it adds an extra level of wrongness when you see them play a role like that and meet a grisly end.

Even with all the faults this video brings up, this movie disturbed me. The part where he crushes his hand disturbed me. The rat being liquefied disturbed me more. And then the part where the A-list movie star comedian realizes this seemingly indestructible super-human strength blob has wrapped itself around his face and is going down his throat and then is killed from the inside really fucked up my psyche. I just spent the rest of the movie praying for that thing to die. Knowing full well it won't FFS.

Beating Kelvin for sure in two steps: Step 1: Have a fully remotely double doored compartment ready when the probe arrives. Put the entire probe inside of the compartment to avoid contamination of any sort and begin remote testing. Intermission: Kelvin has pulled of some really crazy shit, so it might try to make sure that a starter cell of it survives reentry if we jetison the secured compartment to earth. Too risky. If we jetison it into deep space we might either plague other species with Kelvin, which would probably not be interpreted as a sign of peace by their surrvivors. Or future humans might stumble upon it. Both unlikely, but still some lousy options. Therefor: Step 2: Always aim the compartment, and if necessary the entire space station, in such a way that seperating the compartment and shooting it away will send it on an unobstructed collision trajectory with the sun. Kelvin might have an ever so slight chance of surviving reentry to Earth. But nothing short of a black hole survives entering an active star. On a sidenote: If Kelvin still does survive and comes back, we didn't stand a chance in the first place. Edit: A viable option to destroy Kelvin on Earth, at least early on, would be a repeated nuclear strike. Again, it has survived some crazy shit up until now. So noone, in their right mind, would blame you for making sure that it is dead.

The whole "deep space" thing is not possible, not with the escape pods, not with the shuttle that was sent to push the station. None of these options would have worked as they don't have enough energy to move that HUGE space station enough out of orbit. Any attempt would be futile as it would only result in a slightly higher geocentric orbit. I'll admit that it would keep the alien in space for longer, but it would still eventually fall back to earth as the orbit of the ISS is not being constantly maintained by the on board thrusters.
