Not everything is selfish towards self preservation even when you know life is precious. Kindness, compassion and selflessness takes more balls than saving your own skin. Soldiers do everything to save their people and even civilians even if it means sacrificing their own. basic training creates that bond of brotherhood or sisterhood that you would do everything to save your people. Seeing as how it basically replicated our MC, I'm guessing it also understood that kind of bond together with morals and compassion that it copied from humanity that it decided to destroy itself knowing it was bringing more harm than good

Lore wise, the foundation does try to do whatever they can to limit the amount of MTF casualties taken on any operation (hence D-class on a string). It's just a matter of statistical likelihood that constantly encountering eldritch horrors is going to result in some dead bodies. Some SCPs (especially old ones like 906 or angry lizard) are written to be unkillable, but are also openly hostile. So of course no matter how smart you make the Foundation in those stories, they lose a ton of highly trained personnel. But other than that, if we need to place some rats in a cage just inside the shimmer? D-boys. Need to take some quick video? D-boy on a string. Stick a shovel in the dirt to get some soil samples? Looking back on it, 95% of all actions the characters--of which like 3 had PhDs--in Annihilation performed (outside of giving us exposition) required zero special training beyond knowing how to use a microscope, and which end of a rifle goes bang. I've only gotten through half of the second book, and it's pretty slow and more focused on the political intrigue aspect. Overall you'll just keep reading it because you NEED the answers, so whether you like it or not you're hooked regardless.

Being a psychologist just means ur a scientist, so it’s dumb to assume she doesn’t have the necessary expertise to do it. And that they have previously sent human personnel via land, air and water, aswell as drones and such. It's not like they have just found about the phenomenon, and that these are the very first people they send to investigate. Insanity doesn't just replace you with a different person that shares nothing in common with you. Characters are not people. People die pointless random deaths after being hit by a car or getting a disease. Characters die in a way that concludes their arc or someone else's. If she were a character established beforehand to be distrustful or if the story were about themes of people being untrustworthy, then yes, her sudden total replacement of personality would be good writing and comperable to bullets bouncing off superman. Ironically, the story IS about themes of having your memories being fake and not knowing who you are, which would have perfectly justified her nonsensical serial killer behavior AND been perfect for the story, but no. She's just generic hollywood crazy and just HAPPENS to zero in on Lena. (Definitely not because she's the protagonist and the story was getting slow)

People have killed others as a result of drug induced paranoia - and why should the Shimmer be any less potent than an earth made drug? And to get this straight, you'd prefer characters be written like characters in a storybook as compared to real people? I personally prefer characters to have stories like real people, you don't have to have a concise beginning middle and end for a good story, especially in the horror genre. That's archaic thinking and puts you into a box. Even outside of horror, something like Pulp Fiction flies in the face of this, because its characters are written like real people. Vincent dies a random, meaningless death. But it's justified because of his character and his environment. Similarly, Anya is a damn paramedic facing down an otherworldly, incomprehensible threat that has a record of causing paranoia and you expect her not to succumb to that? If you want to be this cynical and unfun, her being paranoid was more of an excuse for the bear thing to show off its vocal chords, and to have a suspenseful scene where they can't run away. If they just wanted excitement, they could've just thrown the bear at them and had it kill Anya, they hadn't really revealed it at all yet.

Like why they didn't use drones was because of the area attacking electronics that were too advanced or got too close to the epicenter, and the people studying were a shady organization that was slowly going mad just from being in proximity to the shimmer, which was why they made really weird decisions like sending in a group of scientists without PPE lead by a psychologist. There had also actually been people who did go into the shimmer and came back out alive, they just didn't go in very far. The people being sent in were essentially being used as human test subjects. Most of the movie and character decisions make a bit more sense if you consider the possibility that the shimmer's effects aren't restricted to within the shimmer's visible borders. It's hard to experiment with mice at the border if you don't know where the effects of the shimmer truly stop, and it's hard to test that sort of thing without affecting the humans trying to figure it out. If the shimmer refracts everything, to the point of creating trees made of glass, then it may do the same to electronics, interrupting their functions and ability to work without directly shutting them down immediately, even when preprogrammed. And it may be, well, slowly driving the people trying to study it mad even as they try to study it. Even if the expedition's actions seem stupid sometimes like leaving the guard tower, if they're slowly going mad, with the effects growing more pronounced the further in they go, then it'd be weird if they *didn't* start making irrational decisions. And they'd already been in the shimmer for at least several days, so past the time where they regained their awareness, they've already been exposed for an extended period of time. In fact it's possible that the time when they first regain their awareness is when their cells had become permanently changed beyond the point of no return. Like they were only able to consciously experience the shimmer after they'd been assimilated, at which point they're already kind of fucked. But admittedly that last bit is just a theory.

@@dylanbarnhart6311 it was for sampling purposes. Previous team which got slaughtered was all male. They wanted to collect data for a full female team without any expectation of them surviving, just more data to research so each successive expedition would survive somewhat longer for even more data. In the book there were multiple "successful" expeditions (IE had some survivors) around the outer rims which helped provide the standard for expeditions going deeper inside and not getting immediately annihilated. Stuff like the shimmer having an extreme reaction to any advanced tech.

They actually were kinda doing that in the books (intentionally sending people in as test subjects, and in the books simply being around the shimmer makes one unhinge and become ever more paranoid)

@@Mesakezuit well of course he is. there are so many plot holes, and times the characters act uncharacteristically stupid, in order to move the plot forward, without having to put the effort into having to make believable conflict. those among other things shows, that the writer behind annihilation is a hack, who would rather quickly make something, that gives the illusion of having deeper meaning. in order to trick people like you or me, which he likely thinks are a bunch of idiots who would lend money to him, and by extent the studio who produced the film. if he puts a few, somewhat deep and poetic sounding lines in his script
