Thank you for this I am teaching Health Information Management in Calgary Alberta Canada at a college in the health care management and leadership program . This helped huge as an introductory of coding to the students before we dove into the chapter Ron Bezanson

Thanks for the guidelines. Great help for someone like me quite pessimistic of the future of the medical coder. Hope the course will still be relevant for the next 5 to 10 years.

Medical coding isn’t going anywhere. Medical transcription will probably be completely gone 5/10 years from now, if I had to guess.

Hi. I am Nadira from Detroit, MI. I am about to finish my associate of general studies degree and I am thinking about to go for medical coding career. I didn’t work any health care field before but I know I am interested in health care field. Do you think I can do that? For the CPC Exam do I have to enroll AAPC Course or I can study by myself and prepare for the CPC Exam? I already downloaded the medical terminology and Structure and Function of the body books mentioned in the AAPC website as I don’t have previous experience or knowledge about medical field.

Coach, what training schools do you recommend? After passing the CPC exam, what are the recommended steps to remove the "A"/Apprentice on your license. Do you have a video about Practicode? Thank you so much for sharing your insights. I am still undecided whether I will choose to be a medical coder. I left a corporate job and looking for a WFH job which will be more flexible and appropriate with my profession (Registered Pharmacist).

Considering the automated computer softwares already fed with the medical coder information, cannot a software Do the same thing which a medical coder used to do in past? Do you think still the medical coder has a scope in future?

Hello Chanchal, one of the reasons why automation is not really 100% dependent in this healthcare field, is because we are dealing with people's conditions. Imagine coding and reporting an incorrect diagnosis can mess up the treatment and medication that will be given to the patient. Many companies have tried doing it but the human eye and judgment cannot be beaten by computers in this industry.

You only have to renew your AAPC Membership yearly, or your employer will do that for you

Historically, jobs in this field primarily attract female workforce. However, men are starting to increase in this field as the years go by. Male doesnt appear to have particular advantages or disadvantages when it comes to finding work, it is just that there are just more female who are certified coders. This is an gender-equal job.
