Many students all around the world such as the UK, Pakistan and India have been asking how they can become a psychologist in these countries after 12th grade. I am wondering if this happens to our fellow Malaysians too?
Hence, I decided to make a video talking on this topic of how to become a psychologist here in Malaysia. With a steady increase in Psychology graduate in our country, I believe this video will be a great help to students who are planning to take on Psychology in the future.
It is a rewarding career for sure, but do you know what kind of qualifications that you need before reaching there? Watch this video to find out more!

Or if Malaysia is unregulated in this field? Also, can you please share some top recognized counselling certificates in Malaysia, after doing which, you can start your own counselling practice/business. Thank you in advance

Hi, I'm currently deciding between help and sunway to pursue for a psychology degree and just came across your vid. May i know how's your overall experience studying in sunway and is there any good or bad side of it and etc? Because although i personally prefer sunway but the fees is more expensive than help and didn't have many scholarship options.
@ahyangjy8065
@ahyangjy8065 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Eva, thank you for your comment and question! I had a great time studying at Sunway Uni. The facilities are great (and it’s always improving!) and majority of the psych lecturers r good and knowledgeable in what they r teaching too. If I were to point out some downsides for studying psych in sunway uni it will probably be the course structure. First year is basically the honeymoon year cus the workload is very manageable (I feel they could’ve arranged some second yr subjects in first year). But once you enter second year the workload will increase exponentially, so you need to make sure you’re prepared for that! Of course, this is just my experience it might be different for u. Other than that, sunway uni is a good choice cus once you graduate, you’ll be receiving two certs. If you’re planning to continue your Master in the UK, cert from Lancaster will be very helpful in your application (e.g. IELTS may be exempted). In regards to scholarship, I think sunway uni offers quite a number of scholarship. I will suggest u to check out Star Education Fund (and SinChew Education Fund too). If you’re chosen to be one of the recipients, they will offer you a full scholarship with zero bond after u graduated from uni. Sorry for the lengthy reply hahaha hopefully it answers your questions 😊

Hi Zi Qi, thanks for your comment! Unfortunately I am not the right person to provide you with feedback on IMU psychology course because I have not done any research on it. However, if your concern is the credibility of the course, then you can log on to MQA official website to check out its accreditation status. Moving on, I have course mate who managed to secure a spot in UKM studying Master in Clinical Psychology. Hi there! Thanks for your comment! In order to become a psychiatrist in Malaysia, one needs to have a medical degree and later on continue to specialise in psychiatrist. So, if you have already obtained a medical degree then you're on the right track of becoming a psychiatrist in Malaysia! On the other hand, if you are planning to take on the clinical psychologist route, you may refer to Malaysian Society of Clinical Psychology (MSCP) for more information. Hope these info are helpful! =D

Hey there! I’m currently on the 2nd year of BSc of Psychology in the UK and I was left speechless when you said that it requires 8 YEARS to become a certified psychologist 😂 I was contemplating whether I’m choosing the right direction 😂 but was that only for clinical psychologist or other-type-of-branches of psychology? And I’m actually planning to continue my Master’s Degree in the UK as well, but I’m not sure whether I will continue with Psychology-related Master’s Degree. Because for me, I think taking another course in Master’s degree (given that I have graduated with BSc Psychology) would have the best of both worlds and it will lead to wider jobs in the future. My plan is to probably work in a company where marketing and communications (this could be the related course of my Master’s Degree) would want a helping hand from a psychologist which can plan marketing strategies in the company. But I also have in my mind of becoming a forensic psychologist because I love to analyse and observe people’s behaviours (not in a scary way 😂) but yeah I’m still kind of confused on how I should go with my Master’s Degree. Thank you!
@ahyangjy8065
@ahyangjy8065 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Thank you for your comment! Yes! 8 years is long BUT it’s included the years that you have spent in pre-u so if you were to exclude that, then it’d probably just take around 5-6 years to complete your studies! To answer your next question, whether you should continue your master in psychology or marketing, I think you might want to consider working in a marketing firm first in order to explore your interest. If you’re truly interested in that, then you’ve got your answer! Also, from my understanding, if you were to practice psychology in the UK, most of the one-year master program is not helpful in getting you charted as a psychologist. You need to attend courses that are accredited by the BPS and HCPC (that are usually longer than a year) in order to become a psychologist in the UK or back in Malaysia. Hope these information is helpful. Feel free to comment further if you have anymore questions to clarify 😊

Hi there! Thank you for your comment! The local uni that I know which offers psych degree is UKM. I think they’re one of the best local uni to study psychology. You may want to check it out! As for the counselling degree offered by UM, I’m not too sure about the course content but I think it might be slightly different from the other degrees with more focus on counselling rather than covering multiple areas of psychology. You might need to have a chat with the admission office to learn more about it. In order to become a clinical psychologist, you will need to have a degree in psychology and obtain at least a second class upper in order to be eligible to get a spot in the master in clinical psych program. It is a competitive program, so make sure you study hard if you’re sure that you’d like to pursue a career in clinical psychology. Hope you find the answer helpful. Hi Ling Yee! Thanks for your comment! In order to become a certified counsellor in Malaysia, you would need to have a master's degree in counselling psychology. With that said, you will roughly need to spend 7 years (assuming 2 years diploma, 3 years undergrad & 2 years master) on your studies. From what I know so far, most of the master's degree in counselling psychology do offer part time option. Perhaps, you could look into it and devise a plan that would suit your circumstances. Nonetheless, I wish you all the best in pursuing what you love!

However, I personally have not heard of any psychology diploma course and I’m not familiar with public university schooling system too. Hence, I’d suggest you to start off with choosing your desired degree course and university. Then, from there on work backwards by contacting the university’s admission and clarify with them the basic qualifications that are needed to enrol into the chosen course. With that, you would know which pre-u course is the right choice for you. Hopefully it answers your question! Wishing you all the best in getting your desired result for SPM! 😊

Hi Michelle! Thank you for your comment and questions! If I understand your first question correctly, you are asking which subjects you should sign up for in your pre-u course if you were to major in psych in a local u. I think different uni has a different entry requirement, so it is always a good idea to call up the uni admission and check it out. Based on my own understanding, generally for psych degree, it is fine to sign up for any subjects in your pre-u course. However, since you have already made the decision to study psychology, then it would be great for your to sign up for courses that would be helpful for your to understand psych content better in the future, e.g. biology & statistics. For your second question, I think you would need to check with your sponsor on that. Different sponsors have different T&Cs. Of course, it'd be great if your sponsor could provide your with a full scholarship for your undergrad studies. And for your last question, yeah! I'd completed my psychology undergraduate study 3 years ago! Feel free to comment further if you have anymore questions to clarify =D

If that’s the case I don’t see any reason why you can’t pursue a career in psychology. In order to become a psychologist, you’ll need to attend a pre-u course, then move on to complete a psych undergraduate degree and eventually a master degree in the niche that you’re interested in. Psych degree is a general degree so you don’t necessarily have to major in science or arts to secure a spot for yourself in uni. So yeah, study hard for SPM and get sponsored to complete your tertiary education! All the best!

Hi, thank for your comment! In my opinion, I think it'd be good if you are able to cope well with biology as clinical psychology focuses a lot on the study of brain. Nonetheless, it's still too early to say you're not good in biology. I've friend who didn't do well in A-levels biology, yet graduated from medical school with 4.0 pointers. So, study hard and don't give up!

Hi, I am a recent psy grad, is it advisable to pursue Counselling or therapy Master's overseas? As overseas have more opportunity as compare to Msia, but is it true that foreigner is harder to land a job as most of the countries only hire the locals to be their counselor?
@ahyangjy8065
@ahyangjy8065 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Melissa, thank you for your comment and congrats for earning the degree! I think it’s always great to go overseas study and experience different cultures. However, for psychology, if you’re looking to practice as a mental health professional in overseas, you might have to take note of the requirements in different regions. If I’m not mistaken, the standard is pretty high. For example in the UK and US, you need a PhD in order to practice as a psychologist in the country (or for some states). Also, do be careful when you’re applying for psych master in the UK. If you’re planning to practice there as a psychologist, you must make sure the master program that you’re planning to apply is accredited by the HCPC. Moving on, mental health services are highly regulated (I think this is part of the reasons why they need the practitioner to hold a PhD), so I think it is challenging for foreigners to compete for a job in this niche. However, if you’re passionate about becoming a psychologist oversea, it’ll always be a good idea to check with the uni admission in order to understand how the system works over there! Hope these answers are helpful! Feel free to follow up if you had any more questions 😊

Glad that it’s helpful. I did consider to practice in Malaysia, unfortunately it didn’t happen. So yeah! It’s difficult but it definitely a very rewarding career. All the best!💪💪

However, if you are interested to pursue a career as a counsellor in Malaysia then you might need to check this out by giving the Ministry of Woman, Family and Development a call as the Board of Counselling falls under their jurisdiction. @@ahyangjy8065 Personally, I think it is a useless major especially when you wanna obtain a high paying job. In order to practice , you need PHD just to get a job that fits you. However, in a developing countries such as Malaysia, graduates may find it difficult to get a suitable job due to the low demand in the market. Not only psychology but biotechnology, liberal arts and etc. And psychologists are not real Dr as they're unable to prescribe meds. Their only jobs r talk therapy that does not really help for most of the patients. But, psychiatrist is able to conduct psychotherapy which is much effective than a psychologist. So, why bother majoring in psychology when u can easily seek a psychiatrist for help.

@@slamdunk1759 as a person that had gone through mental health issue psychologist does play a part for my treatment. Psychologist are there to help how to deal with anger or anxiety. Having mental health doesn't mean popping a pill everything will go away. It takes time and mind exercise that psychologist provide. With that being said psychologist does play a big part for people that was diagnosed with mental illness. And saying something is gay to portray it as 'weak' just show how close minded you are.
