The stairs technique was used a lot by Ayrton Senna, not only to induce understeer, but to prevent tire lock too, because the grip in those cars was not very consistent.

The science checks out but it will all come down to a feeling over years of conscious exposure. I remember when I first learned about trail braking and the ability to play at the limit didn't click fully until a few years later. Sure I knew I needed to trail brake but for it to become so natural that I could predict what I needed to do took a lot of time. Essentially, I just kept applying the concept until it became second nature and then and only then could I start to manipulate the brakes in a way to gain more time. This is because you are making micro corrections in tenths of a second and the ability to do that will need to be locked in at a subconscious level.

sorry if I'm wrong: on 9.22 you say about transfering too much weight to the fronts. But as I understand, transfering more weight will only help fronts, and problem is that front grip is used too much for the braking itself. I mean, having more weight = having more grip, which is always great for the fronts! But using fronts too much for braking prevents it from being able to steer. I Please, correct me if I''m wrong

Tires have load sensitivity. They lose friction with load. The force will still increase, but laterally the front would become less efficient compared to the rear and result in generally a net-loss in lateral force potential.

i know this video is a bit older, but ive realized that grid legends actually takes these concepts and applys them really well. sure, the actualy physics...arent that good....but they are well done simcade. way better than forza as forza just pretends it has physics, and theres no real actual racing being done. but grid legends, you need to trail brake, throttle control, tweak your streering sure, nothing like assetto corsa, but if you figure out how the game has these things work, you start getting a lot faster.

I want to post a warning towards people considering buying this course. There are serious problems with theory provided in this video. First of all, the idea that having too much pressure on the fronts can cause the car understeer is jibberish. More pressure = more grip available. And grip is a resource that you are spending on doing different things (braking, turning, accelerating etc). Yes, you can still understeer under heavy braking: 1) if you lock up the fronts (aka brake too much) and 2) if you combination of steering amount+braking exceeds available grip. 15:16 Here you talk about this made-up concept as well and even say that you can understeer by overslowing the car ("fronts are moving too slow") - that does not make any sense. The slower you move the less lateral load can be put on the fronts meaning your cornering is using less of the available grip and you can steer and point the car more. Even in your demonstrations understeer is achieved by turning your wheel 180 degrees, not by "going to slow". 20:27 Once again, this is flat-out wrong. Having less weight on the fronts does not keep them alive, but on the contrary decreases the grip and induces understeer. You have concepts of "inducing under/oversteer" completely mixed-up, later on in that segment you even say that we induce oversteer by releasing the brakes when it's the opposite - oversteer is induced by maintaining braking pressure.
@GitGudRacing
@GitGudRacing Ай бұрын
Hi, The idea of that too much pressure on the fronts can cause understeer is something that's happening all the time for beginners - intermediate drivers. Even in your comment 2 sentences later you say: "Yes, you can still understeer under heavy braking" - that is exactly the point in that section of the video that you're referring. Sometimes it's obvious when locking up the tires, but most of the time it's subtle. Having even 10% more of braking force in the trailbrake compared with the limit can make the front tires go PAST their grip limit. Don't get me wrong, trailbraking and having weight on the front tires helps rotate the car - UNTIL a point where the fronts go past their limit due to a combination of braking + steering wheel angle and at that point you're understeering. The video is advocating that for those cases, fixing the understeer can either be done by trailbraking with a few less percentages or/and using less steering wheel angle - both were discussed in the video and the example you cherry picked was actually the one about steering wheel angle - so I highly doubt you watched the whole video in the first place. When talking about going slower can make the car understeer - that's again one of the things you see all the time in beginner / intermediate drivers. If you overslow the car, you'll generally apex earlier and you'll be earlier on throttle - so it's a chain reaction started from braking too much. Because you're very early back on power - the car starts losing rotation and then it starts understeering on the exit. It's about context! Lastly, yes - oversteer is induced with holding the brakes (up until a point). In that segment however I was touching on something that's not talked enough: Imagine this: you are past the grip limit on the front tires and the car starts sliding the fronts. In that moment, to induce oversteer - you have to regain front grip first - otherwise the car will continue to understeer. Releasing the brakes will regain the grip back to the fronts and the car will rotate better. I appreciate your comment though and If you were addressing some other people concerns, I think discussing about them is a good thing.

@@GitGudRacing > The idea of that too much pressure on the fronts can cause understeer is something that's happening all the time for beginners - intermediate drivers. Even in your comment 2 sentences later you say: "Yes, you can still understeer under heavy braking" - that is exactly the point in that section of the video that you're referring. Yes, but the cause of that is going over the limit by both braking and steering too much. This concept has always been illustrated by friction/traction circle diagram. I think it is important for people to understand the direct cause of what is happening with the car. Because that is the only way they can understand how to fix it. For example, lets say I know nothing about those things and am using this lesson to learn. I steer normally, but brake heavily during the trailbraking phase of the corner. I understeer. Your lesson says I am "overslowing the car and my fronts are not alive because I am braking too much". So I naturally keep everything the same (braking references, steering inputs etc), but release the brakes more during the trailbraking phase. What will happen? There will be even more understeer, because now I am carrying even more speed into the corner + my fronts loose grip faster due to me releasing the brakes faster. I would not be able to fix my problem. But if I understand that understeer happens when my inputs (combination of steering/braking) exceed the available grip then I can fix it by trying to steer less with the exact same braking. And depending on how I change those inputs I can still be on the limit of the car and have different lines through the corner. > Imagine this: you are past the grip limit on the front tires and the car starts sliding the fronts. In that moment, to induce oversteer - you have to regain front grip first - otherwise the car will continue to understeer. Releasing the brakes will regain the grip back to the fronts and the car will rotate better. If you are understeering during the neutral steer then to regain grip on the fronts with braking you have to shift weight towards the fronts. Releasing the brakes does the opposite (it transfers the weight off the fronts and towards the rears). Sorry, but it does not make sense. If your fronts are sliding because you are braking too hard then that means they are locked. Or you are steering too much. Or maybe both. You will have to decrease braking and/or steering inputs to get back inside the available grip for the fronts, but that does not mean you will start oversteering. Hence fixing a mistake of going over the limit of the fronts does not necessarily induce oversteer. During neutral steer you first go over the limit of your rears (induce oversteer by lingering on the brakes, brake pressure stays flat) and then fix it by releasing the brakes (induce understeer, brake pressure drops) over and over again. Hence why the brake pressure graph will look like a staircase. P. S. I hope you take this feedback in good faith and use it to improve your course. Also, one of the selling points of your course is "more practice instead of raw theory". But from what I can tell this video is the only one on the subject of balancing the car throughout the corner. There are no exercises, no recommendations. I think this is kinda deceiving too.
@GitGudRacing
@GitGudRacing Ай бұрын
@serhiiyaniuk6859 This was a good feedback, even though you contradicted yourself there. I will redo this video in the course and add more context around it. What you were saying about understeering because steering too much and not because of braking - this was covered in the video - but at an earlier stage. What you’re saying is not wrong - but it doesnt work that well when teaching others. For example - its a lot more obvious to feel understeering because of steering too much rather than trailbraking with just 5% more. I assume you’re a high level racer either in the sim or in real life - then you know that one of the main differences at a higher level between drviers is being able to carry those extra kphs into the corner while dancing at neutral balance. Not being aware of trailbraking too hard becomes crucial and it's a hard bad habit to break in the long run. I'm working with 5K+ drivers quite often and I'm able to make them quicker explaining in this way - same for lower 1-2K iRating and I'm highly confident that explaining it in this way achieves tangible results. Thanks for taking the time to write the long comments, I think it helped some of the viewers watching this. While I’m not agreeing with your approach based on my experience, I agree this video could have conveyed some of the ideas better - which I plan to fix. Cheers.

@ArchOfficial 18 күн бұрын
Loading the fronts too much (= braking too much) on trailbraking will *additionally* decrease their effectiveness and result in a lower total FY potential, but you're right in that the main component is overlapping inputs too much. You might get more yaw by maximizing front lateral force, but it'll lead to less overall lateral force potential due to load sensitivity. While it's not required for a coach to be a vehicle dynamics expert (Well, it kind of is, honestly) I don't think the dramatic misrepresentation of physics in the video is very helpful either for most people who aren't intuitively very talented. It'll lead a lot of people down the wrong path due to believing in nonsense and trying to achieve desired effects with mechanisms that can't achieve them.
