So encouraging video! I'm so excited that Japan has finally decided to start letting in exchange students and interns, but at the same time I can't find any internship programmes I'm eligible for (in fact I found only one and applied to it but the odds are extremely low). Maybe it's too early for now.

I know!!! I was extremely happy when I heard the news! I've heard it's difficult to find internship programs outside of one's own university, and most are really expensive! - I'm sure you've searched a lot already, but if it helps - maybe you can try looking at AIESEC or the Working Holiday Program as well! If you are Canadian I've also heard of the Canada-Japan Co-Op Program! Hopefully more pop up after the borders re-open!

I’m sure it will be difficult, expensive even and maybe I’ll be a little apprehensive about the idea of leaving home for such a long period of time and going somewhere completely new but we only live once, what’s the fun of you never try anything new? Hello みずきさん! Tips on learning Katakana: → Oof. I remember learning katakana for me was harder than hiragana, but at the heart of it, it truly is memorization. What strategies do you often use to memorize? ☺️ When I was first learning I wrote down each character on a flash card (paper and app) and tested myself! I would also write down Katakana characters repeatedly until I remembered them! It’s also a great idea to think of words you already know (like テーブル - table) and write them down! That way you can practice your vocab at the same time! Tips on Learning Vocabulary: First it is a good idea to get a basic understanding of every day vocabulary (like time, dates, days, family, school, work/jobs etc.) and once you have that down, pick a theme or genre you are interested in! Do you like anime or Jpop? What about dramas and movies? Or are you interested in travelling? What about politics? Once you decide, you can start to immerse yourself in that theme or topic, by watching KZfaq videos, reading blogs (with a translator at first or with a helper like Rikaikun on Google chrome) or reading the news! Then, write these new words down and practice them in conversations (with yourself at first) using grammatical structures you already know!
@daniroselle
@daniroselle Жыл бұрын
Continued! Tips on Learning Informal Japanese: → Movies, dramas, social media! If you can’t practice in person (Ex. Through language exchange groups or going on exchange to japan) then the second best option would be to watch and listen, then write down how characters in shows, or even on social media, talk to each other or comment! I’m guessing you might know です・ます form so learning how to conjugate the 〜に行きます。to 〜に行く・〜に行くよ for example would be a great place to start! *** you’re right that this is super important because it’s vital to when you make friends! Tips on Learning Formal Japanese: There are several levels of formal Japanese like the regular です・ます level of formality, and 敬語(けいご)which in itself has several levels. (謙譲語・尊敬 etc.) Often, Japanese learners don’t really learn Keigo until the upper levels because it requires more conjugation and special grammatical structures! When you’re beginning, it’s not necessary but it does become necessary for understanding the news, or when working! 😌✨ it’s basically the language that workers will use to speak to customers (Ex. In a restaurant) so you may have heard it without realizing! ☺️ I would suggest getting a good hang of the です・ます form, especially because once you know what it is, you can start to differentiate between formal/informal speech and the “distance” between yourself and the other person speaking!

Hello! I have an extreemly important question i wanna ask!! Im 14 right now and i relaly really want to go to japan as a highschool student soon as i can. My mom went to the USA as an exchange student when she was 18-19 because she wanted to experience what it was like in an american highschool, she said it was very worth it and that i should go to japan because ive been talking about it all the time lol. But anyways, i searched on google that in japan they finish highschool at 15 but on some websites they say the finish highschool at 18. But i want to finish my education in my country. Soo uhhh can i go to a japanese highschool at the age of 18? Because im pretty confused lolll

Hello! ☺ First of all, YES!!! I totally agree with your mom! GO!!! Hahaha And about what age you should go, I think it might be easier to think about it in terms of how long you want to go, and when. There are different types of exchange programs (depending on the participating school, institution, or the program/organization that runs it) and going to school in Japan doesn't necessarily mean that you won't be able to finish school in your home country's high school! For example, the following options might allow you to still complete your schooling in your country: - A 2 month exchange that takes place during your summer vacation (Summer vacation in Canada is 2 months long and there is still school going on in Japan at the same time so you would be going to school there) - A one year exchange during your first/second year of high school at a partnering school in Japan that offers the same courses (ex. International Schools in Macau have the same curriculum as Alberta, Canada) and where you can exchange credits for at your home high school. (Ex. 5 Social studies credits at Japanese high school -> 5 Humanities credits at your home school) - A four-month exchange before your third year of high school that takes place during your summer vacation and 2 months of the start of school. (This one might be a bit tricky though because you will have to study extra hard to make up for lost time but it is doable!) If you are set on going at 18 though, it might be a bit difficult in terms of the timing (as you may be in your third year of high school and very busy) but not impossible! Exchanges are no necessarily run based on your age, but more about what year of high school you are in. So if you want to go at 18 (third year) you will have to find a program that allows you to go during your third year in high school. I hope that maybe gives a bit more clarification about the options you might have, let me know if there is anything I can help with! I hope you are able to find a good program in your area!☺

What should I do if I don't know Japanese and want to go to Japan as an exchange student in high school? I am personally studying Japanese (through Duolingo but really don't know much) and won't be in high school for another year (I'm in eight grade) but I am having to begin the process of thinking about these things. I assume the classes aren't in Enlish. Soshould I just work on leaning Japanese before going to japan or will there be different ways for me to learn while there? I don't want to be sitting in a class and have no idea what is going on because I don't speak Japanese. I feel very naive about this whole process and I know there is a lot for me to read up on and understand. I was looking at the AFS international Program and it wasn't completely clear about everything involving languages. One of the main reasons I want to study abroad is to learn Japanese more fluently. I just tend to worry. So can someone please help me clear this up a bit?
@daniroselle
@daniroselle 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Cassius! First of all, that's so wonderful that you are studying Japanese on your own time! At the high school I did my exchange at, the classes were not in English; however, at that time my Japanese was not that good. I only knew certain basic words and phrases, but the great thing about my program was that it wasn't for credits. I essentially got to go there simply to experience the lifestyle, and by just sitting through the classes, using what little Japanese I knew to communicate with the teachers, other students and my host family, I eventually could speak way more Japanese than when I first arrived! So to answer your question, having a good base of basic Japanese (such as knowing how to read and write in hiragana, katakana, and maybe a little bit of Kanji, as well as know how to make simple sentences) can help you to learn even more when you arrive, and can help you make friends easier as people will know that you are putting an effort to learn their language; but, even if your Japanese isn't perfect when you go, as long as you have a base, you can always learn more by pushing yourself to talk to everyone you can, joining clubs, doing speeches, etc. etc.! Once you go, if you push yourself to try everything, make mistakes, and learn then everything will be fine 😊 I think even the fact you are considering an exchange before entering high school is so wonderful and I really want to wish you all the best!!

It really depends but most places will not accept you if you have any sort of mental illness unfortunately. If you are recovered and in a good mental place by the time you can go, you should be allowed by most places. However if you are bad under pressure, unstable or do not do well away from home i would maybe try again in a few years. Its very important that your mental health does not drop while away. School in japan is tough and stressful, especially for someone who is learning Japanese and not at a good level (Not saying that you are, but just to keep in mind)

Yes! There are! There are two (main) ways to become a permanent student, which are: 1. Applying through the normal university applications For this option you will have to spend a lot of time searching for a program that you like! I would suggest by thinking about what degree you wish to have, then searching for universities that offer that degree. Next, look into the application procedure for that program and apply! If you are accepted, the school will begin the procedures to apply for your Visa. (Your status since you applied for any 4-year program and are accepted will be as a full-time student and not an exchange student) 2. Applying for the MEXT scholarship For this option, you will also become a full-time student if you pass the requirements for the scholarship, as it is THE government sponsored scholarship in Japan. :) I will put the link to the page below (The one below if for Canada, but make sure to search up "MEXT ____" and your local embassy in your country!) www.vancouver.ca.emb-japan.go.jp/itpr_en/mext_en.html www.mext.go.jp/en/policy/education/highered/title02/detail02/sdetail02/1373897.htm

If you can and are in high school it would be so much easier to look into your own schools programs but if i’m being honest you have to be very good at the language to be eligible (in my experience) and making sure you are mentally prepared because it takes a toll on your mental health. If you try hard enough and your very determined i’m almost sure you would be able to do an exchange program if you become well at the language through proper lessons and it’s very difficult to go through the exchange program if you are not “smart enough” so i recommend getting straight on that!

Hi Gloover! First of all, yes the schools are very demanding, but it is not a restriction when it comes to exchange! ☺It depends on what kind of exchange you will like to go on, but I will list some options below: No language/ academic requirements: - An exchange program that is no-credit (ex. you go during 2-month summer vacation) - A cultural exchange during summer vacation (ex. 1 month, travel Japan and experience cultural activities) - A 2-week exchange with your Japanese class (you go to a partnering high school and do activities with the Japanese high school students, and after you return to your country, the students from that class come to your class) Has language/ academic requirements: - A 1-year english exchange at an international high school in Japan that is for credits - A 1-year Japanese exchange at a regular high school that is for credits (you take the same classes as your Japanese peers and exchange for credits when you return) - Any 3-year program that you can exchange for credits I hope this helps! There are many types of exchange programs, so make sure to do lots of searching to find one that fits you and what you want to experience in Japan! ☺

The gospel, or the Good News, is the message of salvation through Jesus Christ. It tells us that all humans are sinners and separated from God because of our sinful nature. However, God loves us so much that He sent His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross for our sins. Jesus lived a perfect and sinless life, yet He willingly took the punishment for our sins upon Himself. He died on the cross, paying the price for our wrongdoing, and three days later, He rose from the dead, demonstrating His power over sin and death. Through faith in Jesus and His sacrifice, we can receive forgiveness of sins and be reconciled to God. Salvation is a free gift that cannot be earned through our own efforts or good works. It is by God's grace alone that we are saved. To receive this gift of salvation, we must repent of our sins, turn to God, and place our faith in Jesus as our Lord and Savior. We can have assurance of eternal life and a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. might be late but try sign up for japanese lessons, or watch anime/dramas, try to find shows that have a lot of daily scenes (i.e: going to school, spending time with friends, etc.), my personal favorite thing to do is to listen to podcasts, they help a lot since people there use daily vocabularies and sentences so you'll learn a lot more

Hi Nurhumaira! Of course! It's totally ok to go at 16! I went when I was 15 for my first exchange actually! Then thanks to that exchange, I got to go the next year (my second year in high school at 16) for a speech contest again! I would say it's never too early or too late, but something I did think about was my credits. (for example if I went on exchange in my second or third year, I might have had to add an extra year to my high school) As for your second question, yes! I do! If your goal is to improve reading/writing, I would suggest buying a textbook or studying for the JLPT. Then, practicing as much as you can by going to the library and seeing if you can borrow any 絵本(えほん)children's books! All of the kanji have yomigana (hiragana) so it's a great way to learn how to read! I can make a new video about this too actually! ☺

Hi Manvizhi! Unfortunately I'm not too knowledgeable about the exchange programs at international schools, but as from what I know you may have to enroll as an actual student at the school, or find an international school with a branch in your country that does exchanges with your country/city. These are not for international schools specifically, but these websites may help you to find an exchange program and see what is out there: www.studyabroad.com/high-school-in-japan education.jnto.go.jp/en/school-exchanges/#:~:text=School%20exchange%20programs%20are%20mostly,organized%20by%20the%20students%20themselves. I hope this helps! 😊

If you are considering going on exchange to japan without knowing any Japanese it’s very very challenging. The only way i could imagine it being possible is if you are going over to do university there (which that too is limited) if you look for programs outside of your school i’m sure they might be some but very few for your situation. Good luck.

Hi! ☺ Thank you os much for watching the video and I'm so happy it motivated you! I can understand why it would be worrying to go, particularly since you are in your senior year, and because of the language barrier. It might be tough to go in high school (since you have to worry about graduating at the same time) but maybe you might be able to go during one of your vacations? (Ex. Winter vacation, summer vacation) Are there any programs offered by your school/ City/ local Japanese Association/ Province or State/ Country that allow you to go during your vacation? If not, are there any international organizations that host cultural exchanges? You may be able to go during the period between when you graduate high school and before entering university! For these however, I do not think it will be easy to go as a "student" because you no longer hold the status of "student" in your home country. Another option is to go during your university year! Universities often have very rich and well-supported exchange programs, and more options on where you can go in Japan. I went during my 3rd year in university and studied for a year at Hokkaido University and that experience motivated me to return to Japan! Now I am working in consulting in Tokyo! When I first began (8 years ago) studying Japanese I didn't speak it at all either, but going on exchanges definitely helped a lot, and if your goal is to learn it you are in a very good place (high school/university) to start! :) All the best~~~
