@Clanime Art, Wow that so cooool!!! I'm studying engineering at the moment and I really would love to work as an engineer for the Disney's resorts too! 😉 Your father does a really dream job! That job that creates magic and makes it a reality for people around the world!! I'm very curious about your dad's activity and I was wondering if you could please tell me a little about his own career? How did he arrive to work for Disney? By the way, I wish you the best for all your dreams!! ✨ Take care of you and your family! Anthony

Anthony Anthony thank you so much !! Before working for Disney, he was an architect, he worked for « Bouygues Bâtiment International » , a French company. But he wasn’t well paid , he had the same salary for over 10 years. Then one day reached out to him and proposed a better paid job as an imagineer ! He said yes and started working at Disneyland Paris. He loves his job so much , and seeing the children smiles makes him so happy !! I hope this helped a little. I wish you the best for the future, being an imagineer is such a great career. I hope you’ll be spreading magic in a few years !!

@@clarisseenjolras2240 Hey thank you so much to you to have taken the time to answer me! Yes it helped me a lot yet! You know it's hard to be able to talk with someone who knows about imagineering, it's very unknown by people in general (even by my engineering classmates ah ah) so talking with someone who knows an imagineer is very interesting ! Ah ah, I know a little bit about Bouygues company I'm French too so...^^ but yes, I'm really eager to be part of those who bring the magic in this world so, I'm trying to make it happen! And someday maybe, we would meet us at TWDC, who knows... Again, thank you for answering ! Have a magical day!! Anthony

One huge thing I’ve used so far is Imagineering in a box. It’s made by real imagineers to explain the processes they go through when making lands, attractions, and character animatronics! It also helped me discover my dream of being a creative director for my own land one day!!!

When I was a kid I loved the Disney parks and I would bring a small tape recorder to Disneyland to record the rides. I did the same thing at Walt Disney World. I would listen to the tapes and practice all the different voices from all the rides. I became a voice actor in the 80s and in 1993 I was hired by Walt Disney Imagineering to narrate a brand new attraction coming to Walt Disney World called The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. I preform the voice of the great Rod Serling. It has been a dream come true to be the voice of a classic Disney ride.

Nearing the end of my college career, I have suddenly found myself thrown into the world of Disney. The joy, wonder, and excitement I feel is something I wish to creatively pass on to others in the near future. I greatly appreciated the detail you went into for this video, using examples and key words to better explain “get experience,” a phrase I am all to familiar with. I hope to get in touch with imagineers soon, get some questions answered, and to get the experience I need to put myself out there and spread the magic of Disney to future generations! Thank you so much for taking time to make this.

Sure. I went in after I had been a working professional as a set designer, prop maker, cosmetic and mechanical animation repair man etc. I had a goal of being a show producer (which was the title of creative director back then). But my experience clearly didn't matter to them. They saw I had a masters of fine arts degree in theatrical set design so I was plunked down and handcuffed to a drafting table for three years. I then said to myself that enough was enough and I resigned and worked for a creative company in Hollywood as a art and design manager for three more years. After that I was hired by MCA (Universal back then) to design and "creatively direct" the Jurassic Park Ride for Universal Studios in Hollywood. When that was done I thought now was a good time to return to Disney because they could see I was a creative director and hire me as such. WRONG. This time they slammed a hard hat on me and had me supervise the field install of other people's designs. I did this for twelve years. I gave up my dreams and moved to Atlanta to study health care work so I could get out of this pigeon holed industry for good. Remember, you ARE whatever they have a hire requisition open for and if you do your job to the best of your ability that's where you'll be forever.@@AJ-gc5dg

Most helpful and reassuring information on imagineering on the internet. I’ve wanted to be an imagineer for most of my life because my mom is a massive Disney parks fanatic. I just finished my first year of architecture at LSU. I would binge watch the Imagineering Story docuseries while grinding out late night projects to keep me motivated. I leave for a trip to Disney world in 2 weeks, and I will found out if I made the cut in order to continue with my education in architecture while at the location of my future dream job. Thank you for the incredibly informative video, and keep moving forward.

What a wonderful video!! I would also add that my favorite J Paul Getty quote comes to mind… “Rise early, work hard and strike oil!” It helps to be VERY lucky. For starters I would add to be the very best at one thing they happen to need at the time and also have a good working knowledge of every other field that comes in contact with your job discipline. I have been working with WDI and Disney Creative Entertainment for the last 30 years or so. It was definitely my dream and getting to work with such amazingly talented teams has been the highlight of my life. We did everything in house for so many years but since they scaled back, Garner Holt and other production companies have hired a lot of former imagineers and are contracting a lot of outside work for Disney. After wanting to be an Imagineer for so many years, I kept having to remind myself that WDI isn’t where you start out but where you end up when you rise high enough in your field. Keep working on your art or craft!!!

And to think that I went straight from high school and into an apprenticeship for pipefitting, maybe one day I can finish my apprenticeship and bring my skills into the industry. It gives me hope because at during my time at Galaxy's Edge I saw Pipework that I am capable of doing but instead of this being for actual use, it was just atmospheric design.

Absolutely! And I'd definitely keep in mind that plenty of non-Disney companies worked on the fabrication of Galaxy's Edge. So if you find a niche company that suits you and that works in the themed entertainment industry, you're bound to work on some pretty iconic projects!

Good afternoon! I'm in a bit stuck in terms of getting to where I want to be. I worked as a Cast Member at Disneyland since 2009 straight out of high school. I was a tour guide for a majority of the time, so talking about the Imagineers was something I was all too familiar with. I've since joined the Marine Corps, while still technically employed as a Disney Cast Member being on a Military Leave of Absence. It was through this time that I realized how much I actually want to contribute to the company that gave me so much. I want to be an Imagineer! That is the end goal. I have a Bachelor's in Music Education. My home is in California. Currently on the East Coast. I want to do the Disney Aspire program, which is offered to cast members, to get further along in education while I'm in the service to make me a more viable candidate. However, when the education coach asked me which field I was thinking about, I didn't have a clear answer. She also told me to ask an Imagineer. I'm kind of stuck between trying to aim to get a Masters in the field I'm already involved with, meaning education or music education, or getting a second bachelors in a relatable field. My role in the Marine Corps is musician as it is. I haven't been able to really find anything that a degree/experience in music education, or even education itself could be used to make myself a marketable candidate with Imagineering. The closest relatable thing I can think of would be sound design/engineer, or music composer. Even then, it would be a different area that would need a fresh start. I have another 3 years in the the Marines, so I can definitely use that to further my training when I'm not otherwise preoccupied, but I just don't want to feel like I'm wasting my time doing one thing, when doing something else could have gotten me closer to my goal. I even considered starting something entirely different, like Software Engineering, only because I saw it as an available position on the DisneyCareers website. Thank you!

I’m going into community college right now and for a long time I’ve been debating about what to do. I’ve mainly been deciding between pursuing a business major or a mechanical engineering major, but ultimately either way I strongly feel that I need to end up with a job that lets me be creative. The thing is, my interests are all over the place. I also love movies and fashion, but specifically, I always felt that a future I would really really love has to do with marvel studios/disney. It would just be so amazing if I could provide people with the same pure magical joy I’ve gotten myself from their projects over the years. I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to make it there to Disney solely through the film industry though and I’ve been looking for ways to combine all of my interests as well. From this thinking I discovered imagineering as it deals with so many of the things I am passionate about. I’m still struggling with finding my path but this video helped a lot to understand more about imagineering, thank you!!

@quill404
@quill404 Жыл бұрын
@@durpyrainbowp8405 Hi! Yes I did decide on a major, I am doing engineering. Some lines of thinking that led me to this decision is that you can be an engineer and go into business, but you can’t really be a businessperson and go into engineering. Also I kind of enjoy mathematics and I already have some business knowledge. I think business is something that does not necessarily have to be learned in a university as well. Another thing is that I have for sure decided that I want to eventually work on theme parks. The industry as a whole is called “themed entertainment” and I am now doing everything I can to align myself with that. I don’t know anybody who is in the industry themselves and it is a pretty hard thing to discover and learn about (especially at cc) so if you are also interested in theme parks/other immersive experiences (like museums) I can tell you more. Mainly I found that I am most passionate about this path but I thought about all outcomes. So I also choose this major because if I am unable to break into the industry, I will still have a degree in engineering which is good for many other things. I really hope to do themed entertainment engineering though because to me it is the exact crossroad I was looking for with combining creativity/design, business, and of course engineering.

Thanks for the video! Finding information on imagineering on the internet was 10x more confusing. I am a junior in high school and trying to figure out my career path, and becoming a creative director or project manager for Disney or even other big parks like Universal seems very interesting. English is my favorite subject and i have taken creative writing classes in high school but I have never been that great at art or drawing.... to become a creative director do i need to be good at art or take art classes in college?
@brittmarkart
@brittmarkart 4 жыл бұрын
So glad you found the video to be helpful! To become a creative director you do not need to do art (though some art directors can jump back and forth between creative and art direction). Right now in the industry, many creative directors work their way up from writing positions. If English is your favorite subject, I'd say keep going that route. Creative writing, script/screenwriting, or even dramaturgy are all great focuses. If you eventually apply for a writing or creative direction position, they'll want to see a "portfolio" of your writing so they can see your writing style, your creativity, and how effective you are at describing an experience. I think most companies will also be looking for your ability to come up with creative and entertaining experiences that are doable with a reasonable budget.

Forward and Afterward respectively written but the famous Tony Baxter and Joe Rohde!! That's something I wish I knew about sooner, too.

Thank you so much for this amazing video. Do you have any tips on what a path for a project manager would be like?
@brittmarkart
@brittmarkart 4 жыл бұрын
So glad you enjoyed it! The best part of this industry (in my opinion) is the collaboration of many different disciplines and backgrounds. For any of the roles, you can research what a typical education path looks like without it specifically addressing the themed entertainment industry. For example, if you want to be a project manager, you can look up "how to become a project manager" and find many resources. The skills needed for a project manager at any production company/factory are totally transferrable to Imagineering. So if you go into project management in school, you'll be right on track! Additionally, while not at all a requirement, there are certifications you can get that look outstanding on resumes (I think you need a lot of work experience for the main "PMP" certification, but there are junior-level ones too). Depending on your level of experience, I would highly recommend getting work in the industry as a production coordinator and working your way up from there, especially if you can start while still in school. It's a great way to get your feet wet in project management!

I wish the imagineers who got their dream job can figure out how to make Rise of the Resistance actually work most of the time. Thanks so much for watching, Andres! I'm glad it was helpful to you! Yes, civil engineering is definitely applicable within the industry. Disney typically offers both internships and full-time positions to civil and structural engineers - and there are many other companies within the industry that do too! Rest assured that if you are enjoying your education, you are on the right path. Best of luck to you!

Great video! Do you think an education in film technology could jump over to being a theme park creative?
@brittmarkart
@brittmarkart 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Theme park attractions are becoming exponentially reliant on video to add levels of immersion to the experience, and the quality standard is raising ALL the time, so innovation of that tech is extremely important! There are a few routes to take depending on where your interest lies (ie if you prefer the tech of the displays or if you are more interested in the creation of the media that is being displayed). Keep your eyes open to companies who specialize in this field, and remember that even major theme parks like Disney will often utilize those companies (rather than do all the work in-house) because the specialized companies often produce the best work since they make sure to stay on top of the latest innovations!

So glad the video was helpful! The Disney College Program definitely couldn't hurt - while I don't know that it would improve your skills as an artist, or designer, etc, it is definitely a benefit to understand how theme parks operate day to day! I did DCP and loved the experience - I made a lot of really great friends and gained a much more holistic understanding of the Disney company. I'll be honest, working in the parks can sometimes feel like you're working in the trenches - it can be really hard! - but also so rewarding and fun! DCP participants also have access to classes and special events that you'll probably never be able to do otherwise, so I'd say take advantage of the opportunities you only have as a college student and go for it :)

hi! i love this video! thanks you!!!! one question..¿what job did the planner?
@brittmarkart
@brittmarkart 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! And great question - a planner's job is to recommend how land/space (large or small) will be used and what types of things are needed to meet the needs of the project. So if you just bought a lot of land to build a theme park, a planner could suggest how the entrance and the different lands could be laid out in the best way. A lot has to be taken in consideration: what direction are most people traveling from and where should the parking be? Will there likely be an expansion done years down the road? If so, how can you plan the park now to make it easier for that expansion to take place later on? etc.

@brittmarkart
@brittmarkart 2 жыл бұрын
When I first started learning about Imagineering, I assumed everyone was a mechanical engineer, but it's NOT TRUE haha. Definitely figure out what degree sounds FUN and then see if it will get you to where you want to be after school. If you hate your major, you're probably gonna hate your job, no matter what company you work for. If you love writing, definitely go that route! If you're in college, talk to people in the English and Theater departments to find out what specific major sounds up your alley - quite a few different programs will be applicable (the job applications for writers in the industry typically say they require "English, Script-writing, Creative Writing, or RELATED degree"). But they will also require a portfolio, so start writing now! The more you write right now, the far better off you'll be when it's time to select your best pieces for a job application. And write whatever you want - short stories, novels, plays, theme park ride narratives, children's books, etc. And here's a hint: if you start writing a bunch and realize you really really don't like writing -- you probably won't like doing it 40 hours a week. So try to find the thing that you love doing and pursue that. You will thank yourself.

Where do Industrial designers fit in imagineering?? My guess is the design of props and vehicles ?
@brittmarkart
@brittmarkart 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think the most aligned focus for industrial designers is prop/vehicle design. Drawing and ideation ability is important, and if you can also work in CAD (like AutoCAD) as well as modeling software (either Sketchup, Maya, Cinema3D, etc.), that should set you up well for a designer position. If you prefer the physical fabrication aspect of design rather than drafting, you could also go that route (oftentimes the designers and the fabricators are totally separate teams). There is sometimes a misconception that industrial designers only design sleek, minimal "Apple-looking" consumer products, so I would make sure your portfolio shows your skill at designing pieces that would be utilized specifically in a themed entertainment environment.

Hiii. Ty for this video! I have a few questions - do I need to major in themed entertainment/art/creative writing to become an imagineer? or can I just major in something else? do I need to minor in creative writing/art? - do I need to go to college for 8 years to be an imagineer? - if I’m an imagineer is there a chance of being hired to storyboard or animate Disney/Pixar films? THANK YOU!!
@brittmarkart
@brittmarkart 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! If you want a chance at working for Disney/Pixar animation, I strongly suggest you focus on going to school for animation. Those skills could also get you hired at Imagineering if that's what you want to do, but if you want a chance at Disney/Pixar later, you really need an animation background. If you aren't serious about animation though, there are a lot of majors that lend themselves well to Imagineering. You definitely do NOT need 8 years of college, but you should have a bachelor's degree (or working towards one if you're applying to an internship). Check out DisneyCareers.com for Imagineering internships and the post details will be specific about what majors are applicable for certain jobs.

Do ideas for themed rides come with experience or is it something you should already have before pursuing this career area? I’ve always loved writing and storytelling in general. The visual story telling of theme parks in particular has always fascinated me and is a career path I’d love to pursue. Still, I’m worried that since I haven’t really had any good ride ideas that I might not be cut out for this career path.
@chileanyways196
@chileanyways196 3 жыл бұрын
you could be part of the show writing division!! In themed entertainment design show writers are really cool. They're one of the most key people in conceptualizing new themed attraction ideas. Like in a film in the movie industry, every themed attraction is based on a story. Some are subtle, and some are overt. It's the show writers’ job to create a compelling story experience and collaborate with the other designers to make sure that the story is effectively communicated through the design. you don't necessarily have to think of rides per se, but more brand new stories, concepts, and characters that could potentially be turned into rides. Or if they already have a concept/theme in mind your job would be to flesh it out and make it an actual story experience. like if they said "we want to do an avengers attraction" it would be your job to revitalize that concept and create a storyline with those characters/universe for the ride to follow. They also write the pre-show which is the entertainment before the main attraction which is a way to keep guests engaged while waiting for a ride. that also usually has a storyline that contributes to the story of the main ride! you should look up some attractions with the pre-show so you can see it in action its really cool :) I didn't explain that very well but hopefully, you get the gist haha!!

First I would like to say thank you so much for this. I am a high schooler pursuing Imagineering. Second, what would be the best majors in college for Imagineering?
@brittmarkart
@brittmarkart 4 жыл бұрын
So glad you enjoyed the video! First, you need to figure out what you want to do as an Imagineer. "Imagineer" itself is not a job title - it just means you work in themed entertainment or specifically, for Disney. What do you want to DO as an Imagineer? There is quite a list of things to choose from as I noted in the video. Once you figure that out, the choice of major should be easy (i.e. if you want to be a mechanical engineering Imagineer, you should major in mechanical engineering). If you aren't sure right now what you want to do, try looking at a list of majors from the college(s) you are interested in and make note of what sounds the most fun/interesting to you. Then look at what classes are required for that major. Does it still sound fun/interesting? If so, you are on the right track. Another route would be to look at the job postings on the DisneyCareers.com website for Imagineering. They have a lot of internships posted right now - skim through them and see which ones catch your attention, then see what the requirements for those are. They will list on the website what majors prepare you for the different jobs. Good luck!
