Thanks for the video, very well done!! I searched this out because i installed a device and a fellow told me it was because the ground and neutral are bonded, because we have a main breaker panel. He then proceeded to tell me that new code eliminated bonding the ground and neutral! So i found your video!!!! Im not real clear what has changed though. Thanks again for the video!

Bill, I believe you need to clarify what type of transfer switch you are using in your video. I assume that the transfer switch that you have shown in the video is not a separately derived system - (meaning the neutral is not being switched). However, if it is then according to 2023 NEC Article 250.30 (A)(1) Exception No. 1 - it requires for the grounded conductor (neutral) to be bonded to the grounding electrode connection inside the transfer switch. Then, upon loss of utility power, the generator transfer switch becomes the primary power source.

So after all that, nothing has changed. It's still - bond at your first means of disconnect - separate ground/neutral everywhere after that. (Unless I missed something).

Yeah seems that way, electricians want to do panel upgrades with meter and main service disconnect and new panel to tell home owners they gotta separate grounds and neutrals, main difference is that every living area has to be arc fault, and wet and damp locations gfci, the breakers are pricy. Im residential journeyman, from 2011, some dude told me that 2017 requires you to separate grounds and neutrals, including from main, but so far nobody has told me thats correct.

Be nice if they just put 'neutral' next to grounded conductor. We don't have exterior breaker panels so they require us to attach the GEC at the meter main

Great vid. You may want no make a vid on how the generator kicks in during a grid power failure to really show the flow of power and when neutral / ground connections should not be allowed to avoid objectionable current. Thanks.

@OSAS726 Жыл бұрын
You are referring to a ghost current. I so absolutely agree with you. This is why grounding and grounded conductors should only be bonded at the closest point to the service entrance. Preferably at or near the meter base. All the ground really does is provide a low impedance path back to neutral in case of a ground fault. Then electricians should understand and know the difference between earth grounding(lightning protection) and equipment grounding(accidental ground faults).

Mr. Sparky. Where your conductors return to the MLO Sub panel, from the transfer switch, the bending radius and gutter width shall conform to 312.6, "Deflection of Conductors". I am assuming your using 2/0 copper or 4/0 aluminum conductors. The gutter space does not seem to match Tables 312.6a or 312.6b. Can you explain your conductor bending calculations? I'm in the 2017 NEC.

If the house was built with a stand-by generator included, you could do that. 99% of the time, you're adding the switch to an existing system so it must go wherever there is space for it.
