Do you ever feel like you just can’t paint freely? Like you have a lot of creative ideas but when you go to create, they just run and hide? Been there.
This exercise is one I use regularly and it works! Give it a try and see how you respond. I have had to work on normalizing the idea that as artists, we have to create spaces where we can practice our craft. It sounds logical enough, but when you really examine your thoughts about your creative output, you might find that you just expect yourself to know how to do things, simply based on talent. But that’s not the way it works. Talent is potential, but it must be nurtured and cultivated.
This exercise gives you every opportunity to successfully practice just creating freely and expressively.

There are so many things I love about you. First is your voice, its very soothing. Second, is that you speak out loud about your journey, doubts and learnings unlike other artists who majorly focus on painting techniques and hardly every show their vulnerability. You have no idea how much it is helpful for others, who are constantly asking the same questions and in the end getting lost feeling like they are not good enough and judging themselves too harshly. Your videos help understand the psychology of an artist. It is super interesting to see how many choices an artist has to make spontaneously at every second of the painting. This brain training also helps in solving real life problems. Your lessons go far beyond the canvases and sheets.

I’m so happy you have found this to be helpful, Nikita! And I talk about these things because I hardly ever heard any other artists talk about it, but when I found just a couple, it changed my whole practice. I realized that it was normal to have these thoughts, and that insecurities as well as the ability to find your way through them were actually universal and part of the job of an artist. It changed everything for me! Glad you are finding that too. 😊

Love the way you started this. I have taken two of your classes and am having so much fun learning and experimenting. I will have to start a new painting with leaves, branches and flowers and see were that takes me. Thank you so much for your videos and classes.

It’s hat painting weather!!! Love these so much! I’m doing your 60 paintings challenge! It’s fantastic and perfect for a time in my life when I am doing a lot of caretaking. I will definitely do this exercise next! U have helped me so much as I break away from very tight watercolor/ illustrative work into mixed media exploration . You’re so gifted in all u do! Thank u and hope u have a great weekend😍

Bless you with the caretaking. It’s a blessing and also very hard. I’m happy you have art to help give you something back. And I think breaking away from really descriptive work is challenging, so these exercises help so much because you just do them and do them and eventually sort of desensitize that part of your brain that keeps objecting. I’m excited about what you will definitely find to open up, although it doesn’t all at once, it does happen progressively over time.

So grateful for your reply -yes - this new way of thinking creatively is happening in stages for me. I love how you connect art to being human - and I suppose the age/life stage are meaningful to me - but your advice is useful to any artist of any age! Much love to your family and I'm so proud of how you have taken this channel and made it a breath of fresh air on youtube! It takes courage and you've got it! Bravo and looking forward to more videos (no pressure!) lol @@marabethquinart

Thank you Angie. That’s so encouraging.❤️ And the way art functions in my life makes it impossible not to talk about the human experience and how they point to one another-I’ve never had a creative experience where, if I was paying attention, I didn’t see that happening. Comfort and strength to you.xoxo

Love your videos, thanks! I use a similar style but not yet with your great technique and success. I requested your supplies list but cannot find the item I’m curious about. That is, the fairly transparent greenish, blueish or grayish tissue papers, where you place fairly large pieces to veil some lower layers? Are they a special kind of tissue? Thanks again!

Thank you Susan 😊. I tint all of my own tissue papers, so that was simple tissue paper that I tinted those particular colors. Does that answer your question?

Those are tempera paint sticks. There are several brands, but I’ve only tried the Shuttle Art brand, which I like.👍

I use Golden Glazing Liquid, it’s an acrylic medium that works well with delicate papers and it also thins my paint to make glazes with, so it’s pretty handy in that way.

@@marabethquinartmy understanding is that Glazing medium dries much more slowly than, say, matte medium. Is that ever an issue?
@marabethquinart
@marabethquinart 6 ай бұрын
I honestly haven’t used matte medium but I know a lot of people do, so if you want a quicker drying time, definitely use the matte medium. Both are fabulous working with the fragile papers. I just use the glaze because I make lots of paint glazes to use with my collage so it’s handy
@marabethquinart

The modge podge seems to be thicker and I like the thinner acrylic mediums because they do well with the thin fragile papers.

I totally understand--it’s not worth it then, don’t watch. 😊 I speed up my KZfaq videos so people can see the whole process and it’s not too long. Sort of the unfortunate reality or limitation of free videos.
