The break-in procedure is critical to brake performance. We want your new brakes to feel good and for you to be safe. Perform 5 moderate to aggressive stops from 40mph down to 10mph in rapid succession without letting the brakes cool and do not come to a complete stop. Then perform 5 moderate stops from 35mph to 5mph in rapid succession without letting the brakes cool. The reason for a proper break-in is to establish an even layer of friction material deposited on the rotors from the brake pads. It is very important that this initial layer of friction material is evenly distributed.
Completing the break-in procedure correctly helps ensure your new brakes are noise and dust-free. Problems like vibration, grinding, and a spongy feeling can also be avoided by the correct break-in.

This video should start off with... WARNING We advise you to perform this Break-In process in a town that has no Law Enforcement, Stop Signs, Stop Lights, Round-Abouts and/nor any other Vehicles on the road way! If you happen to be outside of Nebraska, and your local Airport isn't kind enough to shut down to lend you their Runway, than we highly recommend you to make sure there's no cops in the area, and to also bring the most intimidating / strongest person(s) that you know along with you, as this process may cause Extreme Road Rage! -Good Luck!!

Just installed the Z23 rotors and pads this afternoon. Backed out of the driveway to begin break in and road test. Huge grinding noise at first brake! Pulled right back into garage to check my work. Put tire back on, tried again, still big grind when braking. Powered through, completed break in steps, grind noise gone! Just sweet, smooth, very responsive braking! I hope I’m cool. If an initial grind noise is expected before break in, it really should be noted in the literature.

Mine made clunking noises and grinding noises, did the procedure and they are working fine for now. Installed everything as recommended by manufacturer, with torque specs and everything. Make sure everything is nice and greased with silicone. Hopefully when I drive it again it wont ever do that noise again.

So true- my first set of Z36 did the exact same thing. I pulled it back in thinking I had done something wrong- nope. After break in procedure and a bit of time the grinding completely goes away. I do think they should include this in bold letters so people don't freak out.

Just installed a Powerstop pads/rotors kit on the front of my '16 F-150. No bedding instructions were included, but I'm not unfamiliar. Noticed right out of the box a somewhat gritty silver coating on the entirety of the rotors. Man... These things groaned and shuddered like crazy at low speed. I started with some very easy, long, low speed decelerations to near but not complete stops. Things began to smooth out somewhat. From there went onto a highway with lights and speed limits varying between 55 & 65 MPH. Again: Long gradual stops at each red light. Finally; a couple of firm, quicker decelerations to full stops, and things got much smoother after a total of about 50 miles. I'll continue with longer easier stops for about another 50 miles, and then see how these do on some of the very long and steep high passes we have here in Colorado. (after the rears are finished)

Installed the Z36 pads and drilled/slotted rotors on all 4 wheels of my 2016 Cherokee Trailhawk. Did the break in exactly as instructed. They stop fine. Not really any different than the original pads. However, as I drive through the mountains a lot, there is no pulsating at all. They seem to handle that heat quite well. The main issue is that when I apply the brakes they click quite loudly. It sounds horrible. They were lubricated well and the clips are all properly in place. It sounds like the pads are clicking on the slots cut into the rotors. Is there a way to eliminate this?
@Powerstop
@Powerstop 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ron, two methods we've identified that can help with a clicking noise would be to re-check the clips and possibly lubricate them more if you see a spot that you may have missed, another method would be to redo the break-in procedure to really make sure the layer of friction is evenly applied

When you say 5 stops do you mean in 1 sequence like tapping the breaks or 5 runs going up to 40mph to 10mph each time?
@Powerstop

Great question! We mean 5 complete stop sequences, up to 40 and back down to 10 each time.

Just installed the z36 Extreme front and rear on my 2014 Silverado. Did the break in process, but I’m still getting a grinding noise. Everything was lubricated and done correctly. Any idea what this might be? Other than that, they seem to work great!

Is it OK to go through the break in procedure more than once? Reason I'm asking is because I tried bleeding the brakes with a hand operated vacuum brake bleeder kit in this frigid weather and the vinyl hose wasn't sealing very well anywhere it got so rigid. I used it on one brake, the right side rear but the others I did the old fashion way by having someone pump the brake pedal. After the break in procedure I noticed that the right rear rotor wasn't as dark and uniform where the pad rubs so I think I should bleed it again.

Don't know if you are still answering questions. I installed the PowerStops on three cars in the last 5 years and had no squeaking or squealing. I broke down on the 4th car and had the dealer install the Power Stops for me. I left the instructions in the drivers seat and asked them to please be certain they were followed. The dealer returned the car to me via a driver (45 miles away) and I do not believe they broke them in properly. They literally howl when I first begin driving. Within one minute there is no noise. I have attempted to do the break in on the car multiple times. Is there a solution to the squealing. It is extremely loud each time the car sits for more than an hour.

@@Andrewlikespieguys No, the brakes squeal embarrassingly as I pull out of the garage and stop to shift gears in the street to drive away. By the time I get to the first stop sign two blocks away, the squealing stops. very frustrating. Wish there was a way to correct and get a film on the rotors to stop initial squeak.

I bought the Z36 Street Warrior brake kit from Power Stop. I have new pads, and rotors. I've also did the procedure to break the pads in. However, I'm hearing a light chafing sound. Not like something is clipping against metal, but. Rather it sounds like a wire brush swiping against sheet metal. Is the what is known as "bedding" for new brake pads?

So I have a question. I have an E550 4 matic and it’s a pretty fast car. I did a full brake job with your Z23 set (rotors/pads) about 2 weeks ago. I was starting to feel some warpage this evening after trying to bed them in properly last couple weeks so I ended up doing some really fast runs. I went up to about 140 or so all the way down to 20. Still feel it. I am going to try and do some more tomorrow and I am just wondering if these brakes can handle these kinds of speeds. I haven’t gone up there but my car can do about 160 170-ish.
