Mie: Though one may be physically able to do so, it's illegal and may result in being subject to a fine.

What actionkid demonstrated is the "subway booth nod" method where you turn the bar empty and let the guy in the booth know so he can unlock the side door for you. Sometimes the door is so loose you can get past without assistance anyway, but don't risk getting caught with fare evasion. Also remember to do it at the last turnstile closest to the door. I have more experience with bringing a stroller through with a partner....

He evaded that fair easily. One of the few advantages of being short. I once saw a father in Flushing pay one fare for himself, his son and daughter. He had the son sneak under first and then he swiped himself and his daughter through at the same time.

If you had a balance on it, I think within 2 years you can get a refund by mail. The details vary, but sometimes it's worth it.

This is so convenient ! I had one biker at the 42nd Times Square Station, who asked me to open the gate for him. I was quite nervous to do that because I am not sure o if he paid before he does have to open the gate.

He didn't evade the fare. He swiped his card & then went to the gate. You tell the agent that you need to use the gate, swipe your card, & open the door.

Does it count if you are not paying the fare? Because I see someone walk under the turnstile. But it is for cyclists to go through the gate.

That's the only proper way to get it through without getting accused of fare evasion. Alternatively you can park the bike at the door, walk through the turnstile yourself then open the door to bring the bike through. If you are willing to risk a few seconds of unattended bike.

Everyone is expected to pay the fare. That person ducking under the turnstile was fare evading.

Obviously, because of the Manuel gates, they have to have station agents at every entrance, and you have to keep informing the agent of your in a wheelchair.

You can lift your bike over the turnstile but it's much easier and safer to bring it through the gate.

@@ActionKid It's not only easier and safer to bring one's bicycle through the gate, it's the only legal way to do so. It's illegal to bring a bicycle through the turnstile, however it's done.

When I drive to NYC from Toronto (hopefully after COVID crisis clears up in NY) I will make sure to keep the Metrocard as a souvenir :D I kept my Montreal card here from when I went to Montreal :)

Yes, use your MetroCard or the new OMNY fare reader... I have been seeing a lot of ppl cutting through those big gates with bikes and large items, setting off sirens and not paying fare like they should be doing. That is about responsibility when you use MTA, and yes i hope the messages are being heard loud and clear. However there were those who felt that NYC subway fares should be free, per protests from last year. Before you think our society should be free of paying fares, remember that ballooning deficit the MTA has on its hands. I am ready for $4 fares soon, and we are going to have to deal with it...

Do you even live in NYC? You really think paying $4 one way is a fair option for anyone? Do you just like wasting money? Do you really think the service is amazing on NYC Subway? And most importantly do smoke crack? Because you have to be FUCKING crazy to think $4 is a reasonable fare for MTA.
