Nowadays, kayak storage and loading carts are essential! The reason? Kayaks are heavy, and lifting them without a storage and loading cart is certainly no fun. But it’s easy to eliminate the pain of loading and unloading a kayak onto a truck bed with this easy to make kayak storage and loading cart. I’ll show you how to make it in just a few minutes!
When scouring KZfaq for how to make a cart, I had three requirements in mind. First, I needed the cart to disassemble easily. After all, I have a two car garage and at times I want to park both cars inside. In order to do that I'd have to hang my kayak on my storage rack and disassemble the cart. This cart disassembles in 2 seconds or less! Next, I needed the cart to do more than just store my kayak in the garage, I needed it to go the extra mile and assist me in loading my Hobie Outback into the bed of my truck. Wait till you see how this one pivots to do that. And finally, when I unloaded my kayak I wanted to be able to hose it down and have the cart not be damaged by the water. This design even helps to drain the water!
The overall design of this cart came from a former KZfaqr, Lef Yak Fishing. He's since left KZfaq and encouraged me to make a video about the cart instead. Thanks Lef!

Just built my own using the tutorial on your website (thanks for the article on the build btw!). The cart is a true game changer for me coming from using saw horses and holds my Old Town Autopilot 120 perfectly. Complete. Additional comments: Old Town Sportsman 120 PDL required 1) the pipes to be 12 inches off center as they stop before the bow, 2) center measurement for groove under yak is 9" (bow) to 8" (stern) 3) i needed to add weight (leftover 4x4s) to the bottom of cart otherwise it would do a wheelie. This is an interesting build... Similar to others on KZfaq that show PVC as the method of support. I was about to build one for my new Outback but decided to check with Hobie for their take on it. First I read my owner's manual and lo and behold there is a section on storage and transport. They have a diagram and describe this PVC method and strongly discourage it. As a matter of fact they say that if their recommendations aren't followed it could void the warranty. I decided to follow up with a call to their corporate office in Oceanside to speak to a technical specialist. The person I talked to described this as a "tragic situation". They explained that there had been a lot of issues with cracks particularly around the scupper holes that they determine were caused from storage and transport on PVC bunks. They went on to explain that it would sometimes take a year or more for the cracks to develop. Long story short, they strongly recommend against it! Needless to say I'm looking for an alternative method. I hope this information will help others possibly avoid a costly mistake.
@KayakFishingAddict
@KayakFishingAddict Жыл бұрын
Hi Tres, I appreciate the concern. Here's Hobie's official storage advice - www.hobie.com/articles/storing-your-kayak,85/ . This storage solution IMHO would be in the, "If you must store it right side up, use cradles or something that is shaped to the contour of the hull" arena. Hobie makes a cradle that you could purchase and use that actually contours to the hull of some of their boats. I've been to my Hobie dealer who has kayaks stored indoors on their ends and on their hulls on racks for long periods of time without issue. All of this is to say, I've developed confidence that with a little support, like this solution gives, there should be no issues. That said, "Caveat Emptor" as YMMV!

You absolutely could. Lag bolts will provide for a more secure connection. It just depends on how strong you need it to be...perhaps lag bolts are a bit of over engineering. Whatever you use, it needs to hold up to water as you're washing your kayak off.

Older video, I know But for the wheel lock situation, just make a little U shaped chock for the fixed wheel, attach it with some string to the cart so you don't lose it. Throw it on the front wheel preventing back/forward rolling when you have your kayak stored.

Awesome idea and detailed build, mahalo! One question- how did you know that the finished cart would be the right height with the bed of your truck as the original builder might have a different truck from your own? Looking at your blog it seems that if the unmodified cart is the same height as the bed then I should be good to go, right? Subbed and thanks again.
@KayakFishingAddict
@KayakFishingAddict Жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it. I'm not sure how I figured that out....I think his original spec called out the height and I measured the height of my bed and it was perfect. My guess is that most are pretty standard if your truck isn't lifted....but that's a guess, ymmv.

I have nearly an identical set-up, but I built wheeled wood carts for each of my Hobies (Outback and PA) at truck bed level. Like your setup, they rest on 2" and 3" PVC tubes respectively spaced 11.5" apart center to center. Good weight distribution so the hulls don't deform. No more lifting - they roll out to the truck and slide in. But I don't wash them on the wood carts, I use the cart deck for storing kayak gear, etc. I built a PVC rack to wash the boats on. Same height, the kayaks slide from truck to PVC wash rack. When dry, they slide onto the cart, then rolled back in the garage. Easy.

Awesome idea and love the channel. I have a 2021 outback and I am going to make this. I even got the cart free since we have a lot of those at work. One question?? It seems like if you load from the ground and put the front nose (keel) on the pvc pipes and pick the back end up to slide onto the cart and load it that way as a single person, that once weight of the kayak front end is up there it would tilt or fall. Even with brakes on the wheels does that platform not tilt out of place or do you bolt that to the cart. I am asking as a single person loading onto the cart?

@@KayakFishingAddict Thanks for the reply! I guess I just wanted to know how you got it on or off the cart in the first place. I am making it and thanks for the video

@@randybinc.6443 The very first time I man handled the kayak onto my truck. I loaded it just like I load it at the waters edge. I put the kayak on my wheels, put the kick stand on the back to protect the rudder, then I lift the nose onto the truck bed, then I get in the back of it and lift the stern and push/slide it onto the truck. After that, I unloaded it onto the cart. My kayak is always either (1) on the cart in storage, (2) in the truck bed, (3) on the wheels between the truck and the water, or (4) in the water.

...oh, and I use the popular bungee method to take the wheels on/off in the water. There are lot's of videos on that but essentially, you replace the end caps on your cart with eyelets. Then you have a bungee chord with three clips on it. Two ends of the bungee go through the scupper holes and connect to the eyelets on the cart. The other clip which is half-way on the chord goes all the way through the back lift handle and loops back and clips on the pad-eye on the back center of the Outback. Then you simply lift the backend up out of the water and the cart wheels snap into place. Here's a video of what I'm talking about ... kzfaq.info&t=690s

Thank you for all that info! The 1,2,3,4 of where your kayak is at all times explained it, the confusion on my part was thinking you took the kayak off the cart after every trip. You guys have an awesome fishery out there with the flats, skinny water, offshore. I have fished in the Tampa bay mangroves and Clearwater once and it was great catching snook, reds, sea trout! Totally different than my fishery out here in San Diego. We do have amazing saltwater fishing offshore for big Bluefin tuna, yellowfin and yellowtail. Inshore is calico bass, halibut, sea bass, etc. Your videos are top notch! Take care!

Did you upgrade to the Outback? Thoughts versus the Compass?
@KayakFishingAddict
@KayakFishingAddict 2 жыл бұрын
I did....that will be officially announced on my channel in the next video...guess I let the cat out of the bag early huh? A subscriber picked up my Compass already. Today was going to be day 1 of me fishing the Outback, but I've been locked down working on producing this video! I'll get out in a few days and I'll let you know! My early take is that the Compass is the value fishing Kayak from Hobie. It's a great boat once you upgrade a few things (e.g. square hatch, thru hull kits for wiring, ...). The Outback comes with everything you need. It's more stable. If I had a 2020 Compass (I had a 2019) I wouldn't upgrade. The major reason I did, besides wanting to experiment with a new platform, was for the kickup fins. It's a bonus (maybe) that they're turbo fins.

How would it perform with a hitch bed extender?
@KayakFishingAddict
@KayakFishingAddict 8 ай бұрын
I'm not sure, it depends on the extender. But if it were me I'd build it to ensure the tubes reached the bed over top of the extender. That way the kayak would slide onto the bed and not nose dive over the extender bar but below the tailgate.

According to hobie the proper way to store the kayak is upside down. How does this storage set up affect the kayak during hot weather?
@KayakFishingAddict
@KayakFishingAddict 2 жыл бұрын
That's a great question. First, here's Hobie's official storage advice - www.hobie.com/articles/storing-your-kayak,85/ . This storage solution IMHO would be in the, "If you must store it right side up, use cradles or something that is shaped to the contour of the hull" arena. Hobie makes a cradle that you could purchase and use that actually contours to the hull of some of their boats. I haven't gone through a hot FL summer with this solution just yet, however, I have gone through several with a storage rack for my Hobie Compass and there was no issue. I've also been to my Hobie dealer who has kayaks stored indoors on their ends and on their hulls on racks for long periods of time without issue as well. All of this is to say, I've developed confidence that with a little support, like this solution gives, there should be no issues. That said, "Caveat Emptor" as YMMV!

Hey there. I actually made this cart and it works awesome. Couple of concerns. It seems that maybe a little smaller PVC would do ok also but have you or anyone else had issues with the pipes being too still for the hull and bending anything? I can see it pushing up a bit in the middle of the floor on my PA 12. I thought maybe the pipes were not measured correctly apart from each other so took the screws out of them and slid the Yak on. Same thing. I believe the hobie sight says not to put on pipes. I love this solution but I don't want to mess up the hull.
@KayakFishingAddict
@KayakFishingAddict 2 жыл бұрын
No I haven’t had any issues with mine at all. Perhaps just check the thickness of your pipes they shouldn’t band at all if so I would screw them down level by inserting support in the middle.

@@KayakFishingAddict that’s for commenting. I was actually thinking the other way around. Maybe too stiff and would help to flex some

@@brianglennie888 Oh, I see. I don't see how it would bend the hull tho if the pipes were straight and as long as it's not 200* in your garage :).

I had a similar thought. I'm going to try a smaller diameter PVC with the ends fixed and some free room in the middle to allow the PVC tubes to flex.

What is your cost in your cart
@KayakFishingAddict
@KayakFishingAddict 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Robbie. Great question. I honestly don't know exactly, and it will likely differ for everyone based on the supplies they already own, but here's a pretty good estimate. The ULINE cart is $135, shipping was $35 (your shipping cost may be different than mine was, but its fast overnight delivery) + $80 in lumber, PVC, lag bolts from Lowe's, so around $250. A similar cart though can be had at your local Home Depot for about $118 which already is less than the ULINE cart but it also saves on the shipping since can pick it up. Of course, the dimensions are different but adjusting the design won't be too difficult. So, a cart like this can be had for $200-$260 assuming you have all of the tools you need already.

Thanks. I was thinking of using a Husky cart from Home Depot which has built in grooves on top for two 2 x 4s - so similar to your set up without building the box. See any flaw in that idea?

That's an interesting cart. It seems like it would hold the weight. The only thing that would concern me would be the assembled width; per the site it looks to be 17.25". The ULINE is 25" wide. 17.25" might be ok, but it may also be less stable. I'd have to see an assembled one in the store before I bought it to convince myself it would be stable enough. Either way, I think I'd still build a box to fit in the upper tray as opposed to just laying 2x4's on top. The weight of the 4x4 & 2x4 box gives me confidence when I'm sliding my kayak on/off of it. The 2x4 only solution may work... but again, I'd have to test it in the store to make sure. Please drop back in and let us know how things work out with it if you do use it! It would be cheaper than the ULINE cart since you wouldn't have to pay shipping.

@@KayakFishingAddict I think you make a good point. If I go with the 2x4s laying in the cutouts of the Husky cart, it could tip when loading or unloading. Your “box” is inside the cart tray which is more secure than on top.
