Last part of the koi pond build at Durham, showing finished pond, path and decking. We also constructed a tool shed and erected it on the decking. This video explains how the filter works and has a video of the finished garden and various pictures of the pond at the end.

OK Richard the idea of having a pond for plants above a Koi pond is a brilliant idea, I don't think I've come across that before.

Hi pondguru I would just like to say you made a first class job of that. I watched from start to finish and absolutely enjoyed it. I am struggling to find someone to build my pond down in Plymouth. I will keep watching your videos all the best mate 👍

A bottom drain will prevent any muck building up on the bottom of the pond so is better for water clarity. Also there will be nothing cluttering up the bottom of the pond for fish to damage themselves on.

The top pond has a few plants in which will spread and hopefully soak up the nitrates.

I am in North East England. I've put a link in the video description which goes to my website. Each pond is priced based on the situation I find when I go out to do a quote.

It just helps to soak up the nitrates (end product of the filtration process). Some people call it a 'vegetable filter'

A nexus 210 is around £1000 and the K1 is somewhere between £65-£70 in 50 litre bags (if you can find it)

fantastic pond but what do you use for preditor protection ? i only saw a heron statue , do you have a net which covers the pond when you are not there ?

There are koi in now but when I filmed this there were only a few of his previous fish in to cycle the pond. If I am anywhere near this year I will get an update video.

I'm not too convinced by the inner ring of K1 acting as a mechanical flter as I thought the original foam in the 200's did a better job of removing fine solids. I maybe would have had a multi foam arrangement like the middle of an Oase Filtoclear pressure filter which you could press down to clean then drain the muck out when the water from the vortex is drained. Chemically, the filter cleans well but not too sure mechanically yet. Maybe when the K1 gets a bit older it'll be more efficient.

Hi, I'm a big fan of your videos! You've inspired me to build ponds far more exciting/interesting than I would've done without watching these. Quick question about this one though - roughly how thick is the concrete at the bottom of the pond? And what's underneath? Hardcore? Although you explain things so well in your videos, some finer details like that would really help.
@pondguru
@pondguru 10 жыл бұрын
Yes there is whacked hardcore and the concrete is approx. 6" deep. Glad you enjoy the videos, man.

Very nice video and a lovely pond Richard but where are the koi? I was expecting to see at least 20 large ones in such a volume of water and with that filter and waterfall.
@pondguru
@pondguru 11 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what is there as I just built the pond. Herons are not likely to fish a raised pond this close to the house but it does happen from time to time I'm sure.

If you live in a temperate climate which gets no prolonged very cold or very warm weather, yes but for koi the water really needs to be a decent depth. You could always fix a metal grill over the pond to make it safe for children?

Whereas humans are affected by lead over their lifetime of lead exposure and may go senile, fish store lead in their fatty tissues and there's not enough lead to affect the fish. Once the patina develops it seals the lead to prevent / minimise activity. The bypass was an after thought hence the small pipe over the top.

If you look through the pond playlist there is one called 'large koi pond with viewing window' and that is a monster. Unfortunately I didn't do a step-by-step guide for that one.

You can't just chuck fish in straight after building a pond - especially expensive, sensitive koi. The few fish in here are there to help build up the filter with bacteria and then after a few weeks the koi will start to be trickled in over the coming months. I tend to focus my videos on the construction of the ponds and once they are built the job is over. The stocking of a pond with koi will take many months after the pond has been built.
@pondguru
@pondguru 13 жыл бұрын
No reason why not. All you need is water in, water out and an air pump to drive the K1.
@Otafumigax
@Otafumigax 7 жыл бұрын
Hello PondGuru! Did you use any pump to drain the water from the pond to the Nexus filter?
@pondguru
@pondguru 7 жыл бұрын
No the filter is gravity fed from the pond by a 4" pipe and the pump sits after the filter. It could have been set up to be pump fed but this one is gravity fed. The 'part 1' video shows the pump and filter set up as well as the bottom drain so you have to suffer through my incredibly boring voice, lol

Any free swimming ones I suppose. Obviously the adult parasites which are on fish won't be affected but their larvae and eggs (in suspension) will be killed along with algae and bacteria thus breaking the reproductive cycle.

that oase 2 way water top pond lower pond are crap.i had 2 and on 2 occasions they broke .what happened is when i tried to turn the water between upper and lower pond.there was no stop point to say when it was open or closed they just kept turning.i love all your videos .you build magic ponds and great advice but that switch valve its like your turning them and the thing just stays open when you want it closed.all the best for the future and keep making them koi videos
@pondguru
@pondguru 10 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is the only problem with that valve. If it is turned too hard either way the stop point can be snapped off causing the tap to turn right around. It shouldn't make a difference to how much water can be diverted left or right as the fitting is a flow regulator, not a shut off valve. It is not designed to shut off flow, just regulate it so you may still get a small amount of water coming out of a closed off pipe. I'm glad you enjoy the videos - thanks for watching.
