Part 1 of a koi pond I constructed at Durham in North East England in 2011. The video explains the various stages and tasks involved in making the design function properly while ensuring that the system is easily maintainable. The total gallonage is 3000 (UK) which equates to approx. 14000 litres.
Filter is a Nexus 210, UV is an Evo 55 watt and the pump is an Aquamax Eco 8000.
Part 2 explains how the filter system works, how the path and decking were constructed and has finished video of the pond, deck and garden once it was cleared up.

The black epoxy paint how good is that? I'm deciding if I should just pay someone to fibreglass it or get it rendered and use the paint my concern with the paint is if the render is to fail then the paint also would creating a leak what are your thoughts on this??

Yes, as it was a koi pond there were many stages to the construction. Most of my other ponds are made with liner and stone so they are quite simple.

Occasionally I think to myself, "You know, I really want to do a [insert beautiful home improvement project here]. But I want to do it myself." Then I come to KZfaq and watch a professional doing it, and I realize it can either be done well or be done by myself, but not both.
@pondguru

I always wondered what the US guys used as a mix to prevent leaching as there seems to be more concrete ponds than line ones on KZfaq from US contractors. Thanks for the compliment - your projects are much more involved than mine and I dare say the good weather you get over there reduces the risk of a washout during construction like we suffer over here. Feel free to add any of your videos as responses to any of mine, no worries.

I only work in the North East although in the past I have done work in Coventry and Manchester for other companies. Toward the back end of the year I will be making a new website which will have a map of Britain and I will researching to find out who does what, where, so viewers can get in touch with a good contractor for their project. That's a long way off yet though.

I've never just rendered a pond without doing some repair work or building tasks so I don't know exactly. The materials don't add up to much but it is a 2 day process so may be around £300? Then it will need painting a few days later.

I just put a good 'glug' of PVA in the mixer and mix until the mix feels and spreads right. There probably is a specific amount of PVA to use but I don't know what that is. The mix just looks and spreads right. I don't use plaster as plaster is an indoor product.

Pondguru, I am doing my own pond in my back yard and was hoping you could please tell me the proportions for the plaster mix that you use? Also, do I need to do two coats of plaster like you did? My pond is in-ground and I'm doing concrete walls rather than block.
@pondguru

As soon as the first coat went tacky but before it hardened. Depends on how quickly it dries but I normally do the first coat, wait an hour or two then apply the second followed by whatever is left in the tin around the inside edges and base.

90% of the ponds I make are at ground level but 'proper' koi ponds tend to be partially raised to keep out frogs / toads, to prevent wind blown debris entering the pond, and to allow a bottom drain scenario on level land as the filter (if gravity fed through a boittom drain) needs to be level with the water height. Also, some people put in a viewing window in one of the walls so they can see their fsh through the side of the pond. Never installed one of those myself. Yet.

Hi Pond Guru ji, does sloppy floor help debris to run to bottom drain and how much slop is good for bottom floor for the pond to drag debris to fall in bottom drain? Does sloppy floor really help to get rid of debris faster?
@pondguru
@pondguru 13 жыл бұрын
Potentially, yes but the clearance around the drain dome is about 5mm and there isn't exactly a whirlpool sucking everything in there so some may survive. Maybe.

I use a paint from a company called ASK Coatings. It is called simply 'Pond Paint' and is available in different colours. A product called G4 is also very good. Both are painted onto cured (dry) render.
@pondguru
@pondguru 11 жыл бұрын
In a cement mix the PVA can't come to any harm and won't be affected by UV from the sun. It allows render to be applied to vertical surfaces much easier and improved workability of render.

If it was G4, yes and the render would need to be perfectly dry before applying it. But this is 'Pond paint' from ASK coatings. It can be painted onto render which isn't perfectly dry and only needs 2 coats.

Pondguru may not be sure what that means, but I do! The answer is Absolitely YES, but you need a pump and filter system that is specially made for outdoor ponds, and possibly a heater for winter. Your kids' goldfish should be very happy outdoors. They can live for years and grow as large as Koi (the species are related) eventually! Goldfish are a great 'starter' pet for kids. They are easy to care for, and can even be trained to take food from the kids' hands, if they are gentle and patient.

@pondguru
@pondguru 8 жыл бұрын
For a 'proper' koi pond the purists would use a bottom drain system as it only has the dome part of the drain inside the pond. Most would worry that fish will damage themselves on a pump or pipes in the pond but that is rare. A bottom drain pond with the base sloping correctly to the drain will remove all the dirt from the pond batter than if there was a pimp sitting at the bottom of the pond but it is really down to budget and personal choice. If the pond is purely for koi and you're prepared to use a higher budget I'd say go for bottom drain every time.

The amount of bricks per square metre is all you need to know from builders merchant. It will vary slightly as there are a couple of different common sizes in the UK. Once you know that all you need to do is measure your pond walls and work out how many bricks you will need based in how many square metres there are in the wall.

@pondguru
@pondguru 13 жыл бұрын
If you chucked enough in there, yes. I should have videod the bottom drain just before I filled the pond as it has a plastic dome which protects the main drain and stops the fish and large waste getting down the drain whilst allowing the smaller waste to leave the pond and go to the filter. In this video, you just see the 4" drain fitting in the bottom with no protector fitted.

Yes, if fish are exposed to free lead they can concentrate it in their fatty tissues so its not good for them. Freely available lead will generally come from industrial pollution (just living in a town), pesticides etc. An actual piece of lead develops a patina which will effectively seal the lead and prevent the lead becoming freely available for absorbtion so potential danger to pond life is minimal - certainly less than the pollution from air or pesticides etc.

Perhaps you mean a UV clarifier? These cause single cell algae to floculate (clump) so that it can be caught by a mechanical filter, in short, keeping the water from turning green. If you are anywhere near newcastle, Shinshiro Koi is a good bet. Also, are you in the UK? If so, what fish do you use and what sort of setup do you have? I'm quite interested in setting up something to take nutrients out of my pond. Might aswell use them.

First I've heard of that, man.
