Thank you Chris for watching and commenting!!! when i started this company i wanted to do things a little differently than how i was done by other bosses. that was to include pay,saying thank you for their time away from their families and vactaion pay(which is un heard of for construction workers where im from). i think we are accomplishing those things and thats why i have such good people working with me. One of the hardest things to do we've dicovered is being a consistent part of all the crews day each day as we grow. Filming a complete video without interference is also super hard. I do love building and actually being with the guys lets them know that i know what they go through and lets us connect on a level much more personal than if you are making money or not! Hopefully we can continue to grow in experience and execution to bring quality videos on a regular schedule. Thanks again for watching

my mom lives in a house with that exact scenario! and the drain is in the center at the bottom of the stairs. i think thats a great idea, you'll be rerouting the rain entirely and not even letting it get to that area.. As a matter of fact the house we built the lean-to on has that situation as well. except its not a tri-level home. i built a roof over that for him when i built his addition! thank you for watching Miss Sandra!!!! you do not have to make your new roof the same pitch as the house. You pitch should ideally be steeper than 12 degrees. A 4/12 pitch which is close to 19 degrees is required if using asphalt shingles. As far as the blowing rain, there is a way to cut Z flashing against the existing structure along with silicone that will protect you from blowing rain!!!

I've started my Lean To addition, 15 x 30, to my existing pole barn. I'm using spacers, as you mentioned, and my ledger board is bolted to the existing 6"x6" barn posts while using lag bolts between the post. (so far, so good)

yes it definitely would be better. i built this lean-to for a builder i work for and he couldnt decide on what type of floor he was going to lay i.e stamped concrete or pavers. so he told me to do it as i did!!! ideally a metal bracket attached to concrete or anything keeping the post at least 1 in above the surface would be great!

Thank you Coplock for watching!!! And for the comment. I would recommend at least a 12°-15° pitch. That would also depend on where you live as well. As far as beam height relative to the ledger can be seen by using a line level,a level with a straight board the length of the building or a transom. Ideally you would have 3inches of fall per foot of length. You can work from the beam or the legder whichever of the two you are most confident in, install that first. If you install the ledger first, multiply 3 inches times the length of the span. So let's say your span is 12 feet long. You would then hook the top of the ledger and mark down 36" and place a nail or screw or a mark with your pencil is fine as well. Then from that mark use a string line or chalk line with a three inch line level attached to it from your mark towards the posts. Pull the line tight and mark one post when the level is centered. From there you can then run the same line level from that post to the other posts. That mark would then be the top of your beam minus the thickness of your rafter. So if your rafter was a 2x6 you would subtract and additional 5 inches or 4 1/2 (to leave a nice bird's mouth). And then make your notches for you beam from there downwards..... If you have your beam set first because thats more comfortable for you, then run a stringline towards the building from the top of your beam and when level place a mark on the existing structure.from there measure upwards the 36 inches plus the thickness of you rafter and mark that as the top of you ledger, and pop a line across the direction of your ledger. I'm curious, how do you keep yellowjackets from building nests under the original eaves and the new roof? How long does it take for the concrete mix to be totally activated?

thanks Don! 1. we set the posts 24 inches deep. 2. i prefer mixed concrete if strength is my main priority, however dry packed is easier and all that was necessary for this job!!! @heymaker thanks for the comment and questions!!! 1. bees and wasps are definitely a battle, especially where a building is barely used. but the best way is to completely close off the fascia. i actually did a newsletter on this exact problem that goes up on my community tab this friday the 9th of june 2. the concrete will be cured in approximately 24 hours

Thank you for watching Ed! yes i did add two screws per metal stud. the ledger break was the 2x6 against the existing metal building. The studs on the metal building were 2 1/2" wide, so i marked 1 1/4" to find the center of the stud, and cut the board to that mark. then continued to the end with the next piece. Being that the both boards now "shared" the stud and the joint it allowed me two install two screws into the same stud and thus supporting where the first ledger stopped and the second ledger started. A 50'x12' building is big building, if you have any questions during your build feel free to send an email with pictures and I'd be glad to help at anytime!!!!

great question!! depending on the spacing between the posts of your fence, you may be able install a beam from post to post on your existing fence that could suffice just fine. these typs of roof designs with metal panels have a very low weight per sq. foot . thank you for the comment and for watching!!! have a great day.

This guy wanted a real flat roof because thats where he plans to hang deer for skinning and park his side-by-side. ideally you would need a pitch of atleast 15 degrees.

You were told correctly. Going up the roof a little ways will provide you with a better slope while being able to raise the beam up high enough to not feel crowded. being that you are going 20' out i would recommend you go 6 feet up the roof to get at least a 3/12 pitch. you will have to flash the gables to ensure no water enters but i think you will appreciate the look you end up with. if you want send me some pictures of your area or any questions and I'll do what i can to help. great question and thank you for watching. the metal roof panels were purchased at a local hardware store and are consistent in thickness with normal building materials if not thicker than most metal roofing on new residential homes in my area. Being that you have expected snow load i would pour concrete footings to about 4 inches above ground and "beef" up the sub-frame of the roof to help with the potential load. the metal will withstand the snow load but a subframe built at 16" on center with 2 foot on center spacing on perlin blocking will give you all the strength you need to build a long lasting lean-to, even in New Jersey!!!!

Is there any concern about moisture getting trapped or getting into the existing structure? I live in the upper mid-west with rain, snow, and all sorts of freezing moisture, is there a need to somehow seal between the ledger board and the exterior siding of the existing structure? Thank You!
