How To Build A Pie Cut Motorcycle Exhaust - Garage Built XS400 Chopper
We jump into the xs400 chopper exhaust this week and I throw in my top 3 tips for building a pie cut motorcycle exhaust with ease. I throw out a quick 101 on getting started as well as some motorcycle workshop tool suggestions.

This is a great video - looking to complete my first custom build over xmas. This is going to be a great help. Can you tell me, did you start with a bent pipe OR can you essentially fashion this out of straight pipe and that's sort of the point? Excuse my complete cluelessness!

That's the beauty of social media... learning. You can do so it using just straight pipe. I use a combination of bends and pie cut sections for the complete exhaust

Great info, thanks for the time to make the video! ANY info is certainly appreciated!! The one thing I’ve noticed in the last couple of videos I’ve watched looking for an answer (unless I’m completely missing something) is, while understanding that the 4.5° and 9° being easiest/ quickest to remember, is there a specific measurement at the widest (outside) of the pie cut? Without stating the obvious that if each cut isn’t wide enough you could potentially end up with a bunch of “lemon wedges”, lol So there’s that, and I’d imagine you’d want each thickness to be consistent, but is there a “standard” thickness of each cut? Does it matter? Just as i long as they’re all the same? My goal is basically to save material, wasteful cuts and extra wear on my blade… Thanks again!

The issue with them being very thing is it Becomes difficult to make nice welds that close over and over again. Also the thickness of the price plays into your radius so sometimes I'll use the width to help adjust for the application.

@@rulehardgarage9740 So, in essence, the width on the outside of the slice can be adjusted per application depending on the situation, and still have the outcome obtaining the radius your aiming for… got it. Sure, I can see having your individual slices on the inside of the radius being so small you can’t do anything to prevent blowing through…

@Rule Hard Garage what kind of saw blade did you use? How bad of burrs does it give your work?

I use a evolution non abrasive chop saw. When the blades are in good shape it gives you almost no burr. I would recommend either a non abrasive chop saw or a band saw. Abrasive chop saws are doable but you'll spend a lot of time prepping.
