I like it but have 2 concerns. 1) If the pinholes are open to the air gap, inside the firebox, it will allow moisture into an area you won’t be able to season and will allow the firebox to rot from the inside out. You can probably avoid this by building up a lot of seasoning on top of the pinholes to seal them up. 2) The door design/position and the V-Bottom may make ash removal a bit difficult; I’d cut out the bottom of the front plate to match the V-bottom then just oversize the door plate to cover when closed. Then you’d be able to get straight in with a shovel or a brush once it’s cold. Loving the series and looking forward to the next episode!

I have one of his Chudpit smokers. It is honestly really easy to clean out the ash with the V-bottom even though the door doesn't drop to the bottom of the fire box. I just use a square shovel and it aligns perfectly with the groove and scoops everything up.

As much as I would love to buy one of your smokers, they are a little out of my price range, but I’m aware that you guys are using quality steel and don’t have a lot of production volume yet, so it’s understandable. That said, the fact that you built your first offset smoker by just sorta jumping into welding has me inspired to learn how to do it, too. Appreciate you making this mini series to show us a little how it’s done! Hope I’ll run into you in my hometown someday. Maybe we can have a craft beer and talk BBQ and music!

I'd slow your wire down just a tad, and you should be pushing your weld pool with mig welding. Also, to help keep your area nearly spatter free, try spraying a thin film of WD40 on before you weld. You'll have nearly zero spatter.

Just a FYI...when you do small bump tacks like that, and get the dot (hole) in the middle, it's called a fisheye and can go all the way through the weld. This, combined with the quick heating and cooling action can make the weld prone to cracking. You're better off to turn the machine down a little bit and run a constant bead. The spot of posority is likely caused either by holding the nozzle too far from the metal or a little wind. Either way, it's usually caused by losing gas coverage. Great videos though.

You should start using dual shield wire. It will help your porosity problems and you don't have to put any action on it so you will weld faster. It doesn't spatter as bad as normal flux core either.

Love whatcha got going on, I've learned a lot on the bbw and cook side of things, a few tips from an old welder when you have your tubing square take a cutting wheel and run it down the seems bam instant bevel weld and will give more weld less grind and to reduce porosity in light gauge metal hot and fast down hill welding is the way to go, when done right it'll give a round over look to your corners also less grinding.. because we're welders not grinders😂

You made comment about the hole from the fire box to the cook chamber, making it lower than you normally make it. I made a standard flow with the fire exit low similar to yours. It wasn’t worth a shit! Used way to much fuel. Once I opened it up, worked great. I’m interested to see what happens with this pit. Thanks for sharing.

Way cool setup you've built up over time, Mr. R.. One thing I discovered when you learn how to weld....your neighbors either love you or hate you. Myself? I keep the garage door down when welding or grinding.(tough to do here in central Texas, but it keeps the neighbors from calling false alarms to the Fire Dept., lol.) I'm Jonesing after your slow speed chop saw. I have the much cheaper abrasive high speed chop saw....sounds like ten freight trains when running. But like you said, a few angle grinders can do most any job...just takes a little longer. Enjoying this series. Probably will be as great as your Weber Kettle series. kudos to ya, Brad. rocket (Weber Kettle with Slow N Sear, DIY hybrid pellet fed barrel smoker, commercial 8" electric hot plate, Ninja SP101 oven/air fryer combo and a small Costco air fryer)

Love the process - 2 things to share. 1st -As a back saver - maybe get a Harbor Freight engine hoist - I've seen lots of guys use them for other tasks. 2nd - might be time to go with something other than croccs while welding - those heavier bent assemblies could take one Chud out of commission for a while with a broken foot or worse. Just a suggestion - again love seeing the process.

First- let me say- I enjoy (and appreciate) your content. You started out saying that all you really need is an angle grinder and a cheap welder- that's the type of videos I had hoped for. You have what seems to be a pretty well stocked shop. Someone who's attempting a 'one off', home built smoker using the angle grinder and cheap welder - for the first time- is probably not going to get much out of this. This is not a knock- you run a business and it might not be a good use of your time to show how to bust out a serviceable smoker with "stone knives and bear skins"- but maybe you could do that one day??
