This is Part 1 of a new build. How to build an Octagon Picnic Table. For as long as I can remember I wanted to build an Octagon Picnic Table and I looked everywhere for a good design and plan. Well I finally found one that was perfect for my patio. I got this design from Woodcraft Magazines April May issue Volume 10. It was a design and article by Bill Sands. Bill did a great job with this article and made it very easy to follow along. I only hope my build videos are as easy for you to follow. My table is build from Pressure Treated Pine and the material cost was around $152 US.
Plans and a cut list will be provided by the end of the build and will be available on my website shortly. In the meantime I recommend trying to get a hold of this Bill's article from Woodcraft Magazine.

Nice Video clip! Forgive me for butting in, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you researched - Rassiff Amazing Woodwork Blaster (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is a good one of a kind guide for getting the best woodworking plans without the normal expense. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my friend Sam got astronomical success with it.

For me this has been a very challenging build. There are many ways to screw up in even small ways that add up because of so many joints. I have been gathering new learning experiences in trying to get this completed, and I am still at it.

Don't give up! I find woodworking is a lot of trial and error being self taught. Keep attending KZfaq university...lol. I frequently pause, rewind and take notes. My knowledge has grown in leaps and bounds because of KZfaq university! I just discovered this guy today because he doesn't have the word woodworking in his title. Three of my favorites are easy to understand like this guy: Stumpy Nubs, 3x3 Custom Tamar and Matthew Peech

wow that looks awesome. and at 152 bucks for a table is so cheap compared to commercial ones. 152 bucks wouldn't even get a plastic "hunk a junk" that would fall apart. nice job Laney cant wait for the next one

When carrying a small amount of short boards like you are in the video, just leave the tailgate up and rest the ends of the boards on it. Then throw a tie down over them to hold them in place. This secures the lumber way better and safer with no chance of it falling out the end of the bed.

Hello, can this be achieved with only a miter saw for all the angles? I know you used the table saw for the perfect angle. I was just wondering if the 23.5 degree angles will be fine with the miter saw. Thanks again! Great tutorial.

Great design, I just finished up building it. After sitting on it for a few weeks, I was wondering if you have any thoughts about what it would take to add back rests to the seats. It would make sitting at the table for longer than an hour much more comfortable. I'm not that experienced so I don't know if this design could support backrests. Any thoughts?

In your intro you mentioned you used pressure treated pine. It is my understanding (right or wrong) that pressure treated lumber has a certain amount of toxicity. Can you comment on this for a picnic table? Thanks.
@LaneyShaughnessy
@LaneyShaughnessy 7 жыл бұрын
+usaeagle7 Do not use pressure-treated wood for making cutting boards, or for any food preparation surface. Picnic tables made of pressure-treated wood have become common, and are fine to use for the purpose they were intended... to serve food on (or play cards on), not to prepare food on! They should be coated as needed with an oil-based wood preservative (not paint or opaque stain) to seal in the chemical preservative. As long as one is not chewing on or eating directly off the table or preparing food directly on the surface you are pretty much ok to use it..here is a great article that goes into more detail about pt wood www.naturalhandyman.com/iip/infxtra/infpre.html

Norm Abram (who?) was always concerned about the chemicals used in pressure treated stock when sawing etc. Will the surface have a Polyurethane/oil or similar finish eventually, considering food will be on it eventually?
@LaneyShaughnessy
@LaneyShaughnessy 10 жыл бұрын
Will Ford Great question... after it was built I let it dry out in the sun some before putting a finish on it and just ended up using a Thompson's Water Seal on it... No Poly/oil or any other type of finish.. most food will be on a plate never making direct contact so I am not too concerned about this issue.
