Weird how happy I get when I see a new ranch fairy video pop up

I love watching RF vids... he is thoughtful, analytical, and used actual data and facts... PLUS a little humor and sarcasm. This is the kind of guy you want to just hang out with and listen to stories and chill...

I don't even have to see the content before hitting the like button. Anything from RF is worth watching, for entertainment or knowledge or both.

I shot my Cape buffalo with a 70# bow, Rampage 250 spine, ethics outset 215 gr, and a Bishop 315gr single bevel. Total arrow weight about 880. Did much research and watching the RF, great setup.

Arrow flight aside… Higher FOCs have always been king. An Easton 2213 etc arrow with a decent 125 gr broadhead out of a bow shooting 180-190 fps would blow through a deer or black bear like hot butter. I’m glad to see high FOC and high total wts coming back. This is def not a fad.

Great video old man! The same (as you know) applies to 550 to 650 grain Whitetail hunters. TAKE THE RED PILL MY FRIENDS!

Dr Ashby said he would find a setup that works on cape buffalo and hunt EVERYTHING with it, think about THAT for minute!!! Hunting any big game with one bone splitting rig is pretty awesome!!!

Hi Troy, wish I could proclaim to be one of your dusters but i can't. I can however declare proudly to be fairy dirt. Yes i am a poor man and had to steal your knowledge and use it to solve my crossbow frustration . year's of frustration. Shooting bolts basically in the sky. I have totally missed deer at twenty yds. and a brutish black bear at forty- five yds. I was embarrassed and stopped telling my friends of all the missed shots i was talking. Not to mention all the lost bolts. I first took your advice and got fixed blade heads. I chose G5,s for ease in sharpening. I went with 125 gr. I had three different bolts to use. The bolts that are recommended by manufacturer with 100 gr. practice point fly deadly to thirty yds. Scary after that. I added 125 broadhead and it barried in target. took vain off one tore another. At this point i new I , (we) we're onto something. But damn i can't afford to lose a bolt each shot. I had some seven bolts that had been given to me years ago. I hated them to the point i stopped useing them. Shooting them was like trying to sight in a rifle with a bad scope. I decided what did i have to lose. Now i always had used plumbers tape to help toon my flappers so i had to go dirty to add more weight to broadhead. I add a stainless steal lock washer. You're not the only one to explore. I was amazed. I shit you not my group at forty yds was crazy . I even shot from standing position. Shot out to sixty yds. Deadly in sitting position. Sorry this is long but needed. I harvested three deer this year and if you will allow me to send photos i believe it shows everything you have taught . The first 41 yds. 3 blade fixed . bolt enters shoulder and deflected off shoulder traveling through deer along backbone and out opposite top off round. Bolt was half barried in ground ten yds. past deer. The second was a 60 yd. Pin shot i had to geuss at distance. Bolt breaks front shoulder and penetrates heart. This bolt brakes but i believe it broke from the deer running more than point off impact. Third was only a 23yd . shot i was hunting Turkey and forgot to switch bolts. So basically i had a flapper 100 gr. No lockwasher. I can't say for sure if flapper opened in flight but i would have missed at thirty yds. Bolt hit high shoulder low neck and then only penetrates 10 inches along backbone. Would you like photos ?.

As a mech eng, the chamfer still creates a stress concentration point on the rear end of the insert. A radius would be one step improved beyond it and is negligible in terms of machining. The principle is sound though

🤯 I just remembered I've seen several Paleolithic points (I flint knap) that are flaked to a single bevel. They flaked a bevel on opposite sides. It just now came back to memory. I'll be tracking some videos down for you assuming that's of interest to you and your smart friends. 👍

with the ferrule diam of that broadhead, looks like you could still go with a .246 arrow shaft, and still achieve the low-friction shaft pass-through you're going for.

I am supposed to go to South Africa in July for the 2nd time. I shoot 80lb+ Bow and have used 650-grain arrow last time with pass-through on Kudu, Wildebeest most of the way, Eland most of way until hit the opposite shoulder. Should have gone heavier with the giraffe went to the fletch. This year running mid -500 something Gold Tip Airstrikes. I am assuming I am going, but who knows. Currently not planning for Cape, but want to add it to my bucket list. When I go for Cape will go for ~1000 grain arrows. Thanks for the timely info.

And I'm going to say it again, ever since I went to a outsert collar I never splinter a arrow tip breakdown on a carbon shaft and I shoot hundreds of arrows at stumps each season we're before collars mushroomed tips over and over, it a fact I have been stump shooting for 40 years now and as far as game goes swapp is the name of the game and I always used extreme heavy arrow heavy FOC so I had that right forever and my opinion every carbon arrow should have outsert collars, amen

Hi Troy, make sure you don't get any glue on the taper at the back of the insert, epoxy on the taper will eliminate the desired effect.

You should get some of the bishop archery foc king arrows and test them out

Can we talk about Ted Nugents Cape Buffalo hunt? Back in the early 80's I believe and damned if he wasn't armed with a heavy FOC setup as well. He mis-hit when the animal took a step as he released. The arrow was in the air long enough that a heart point-of-aim made for a diaphragm(or farther) point-of-impact at approximately 40 yds. The video is available on YT and a very exciting watch.

There is a ton of info and it all makes perfect since… like I’ve herd Troy say before, a lot of us are just going back to our archery roots,shooting kinda the same things we shot back in the day because that’s all there was back in the day… I know most of us aren’t shooting Cape buffalo, I get that… And yes, your mechanicals with todays bows will shoot thru a whitetail with the deer standing broadside… But!!!! What if it turns, or you hit a limb, or the deer doesn’t come in broadside? This setup or one similar allows me more options, and a higher percentage of finding my deer because I’m not worried about “BONES” stopping my setup. Stop arguing Ford verses Chevy and just think about the data for a while and what options it can open for you as an archer and a lot less sleepless nights waiting till morning for buddies to show up to start looking for your deer.

Awesome… same concept as with whitetail hunting, just heavier more streamlined arrows.

They make a glue adaptor that glues into the arrow and not screw in. I feel after you can still unscrew the broadhead after you glue it.

Even though the corners are champhered for compliance...for reducing shear stress, I would break every corner where a potential weak point may occur...with a radius. Put it in a disposable Al insert and chuck it up in a drill, and work it with a fine file. Maybe overkill, but who's to say, and onty takes a few seconds once chucked up.

I am building new arrows at the moment. I have 10 of the 12 factors. The only two I don't have are the tapered shaft and single bevel broadhead. My total arrow weight is 650 grains and 24% foc.

Pretty cool. But I must say you have talked me out of the flapper. But for my deer set up I just took a step back to what I used to use, and that’s a 125 grain muzzy. 25 grain outsert. Plenty for deer.

Couple of questions. 1. Does the length of the insert inside thr shaft improve structural integrity versus a shorter internal insert? I use a glue in/glue on insert but it’s not very long inside the shaft. (Ac glue in/glue on adapters. I always cut my sleeves 2” which is about 1/2 or so beyond the back of the insert in the shaft. My worry with the short adapters was a hard angled hit and I blowing put sideways. However as you stated every time I break an arrow it’s right behind that sleeve. (Has not happened in an animal yet). 2. Have you seen any breakage due to levering of he inert breaking out of the shaft on hard angle hits? I love the ace because they are really cheap, but I wonder about those angled impacts and if my longer sleeve is doing me more harm than good in that situation. Love the channel and all of my arrows are designed for Cape buffalo even though I “only” hunt NA game

How do you maintain the sharp broadhead with is glued to the arrow shaft, won't that limit the ability to sharpen it with the shaft attached to it?

Should you consider cutting the sleeve so that it ends over one of the thicker portions of the insert? That way it too is supported by the insert thickness inside the arrow shaft to help prevent possible breaking of the arrow shaft. Sort of like the insert bevel concept you make in the video . . .

The tapper is a step in the right direction but rhere is still an edge. The perfect way to do it would be a rounded transition as it is found on a spitzer bullet. Talking about watch making.

Hey Troy big fan starting a build soon had a few questions I just picked up a Mathews atlas 30” draw 70lbs I was thinking about going with a 250 black eagle rampage do you think this is a good arrow to start with I’m looking to run 140 grain spinning half out insert and a 200 broad head my other question is about the spinning inserts yay or nay on that read what ethics has to say about them seems legit but I see you always using static inserts have you experimented with these?

would this be best set up for elk ? or the new arrows in latest videos.

Great info Troy, However, I disagree with your idea of a shorter footing being better to decrease lateral break issue. The longer the rear lever (basically entire arrow behind footing) the greater chance for a lateral break. Look at an extreme situation where the footing is like 12" long. That makes the rear lever much shorter. Think about how difficult it would be to get a lateral force great enough to snap the shaft. Although I personally made the 2" footings your holding just as a common place to start with footing size (creates great strength with minimum, if any, stiffening affect), I personally shoot an 8" footing with smaller double footing to bridge the only possible weak point, (end of shaft and behind broadhead). Any potential break point is way up the shaft with short rear lever. This creates a crazy bone and bomb proof shaft at 910 grains, 33.?? % FOC, 300 TuffHead propelled from 70@31.5 Black Widow. i use that arrow for everything I hunt and it blows up everything I hit, stem to stern in quick fashion and in one piece for next victim.

Shortening the sleeve only hurt your cause. The point of the sleeve is two fold. 1. Is to strengthen the shaft end from exploding and allowing the BH from splitting the shaft. 2. Is to move the shear point further back down the shaft.... Past the insert edge.. (the part you tried about being be angled) That angled part wouldn't matter if the sleeve was left longer than the insert.. they are designed to be longer for this reason. AND the further back that sleeve goes, the more effective it will be. Shortening it retains the anti splitting up effect(mostly) But loses the anti-shearing behind the insert effect.

Looks like she will be at up. 60lbs, every single minute factor has to be greatly considered. Cape buffalo are up there with Grizzlies and Kodiaks The moment of truth. I hope she doesn't get the jab so she can go. That's folly.

I'm wondering what do you think about filling arrow up with sand.

Someone should make a tungsten incert around 3 inches long with a ball on the end... Just guessing should weigh close to 300gr.. Then no problem with foc and they can make a collar about 2 1/2 inches.. Will make a very heavy arrow.. The you could also use mechanical broadheads also..
