It is pretty easy to calculate your stair risers and treads. Today we build a stair set without a stringer. It is pretty much a series of small decks layered on top of one another!

If you look, in the building world all the metric measurement “standard” materials for the most part are just conversions of the U.S. imperial standard. Has been that way since ww2. For the same reason a pilot who is used to the standard of English for flight control is curious why you would want to converse in something other...

And a quote comes to mind, “those that don’t learn from their history are doomed to repeat it.” The only nice thing about metric is it is base ten.

Hi Scott. I am a fellow carpenter as well as a subscriber. I noticed that you didn't explain that the top and bottom stair rise heights need to be different in your situation when measuring from finished surfaces. I'm sure you accounted for that but I wanted to explain for anyone else watching that intends to build their own stairs. I really enjoy your videos! Keep up the good work! In the video Scott is measuring from a finished floor to a finished floor. If all of the risers get framed at the same height while measuring from those surfaces then the top and bottom step will be different after decking is added. The bottom step will be taller by the thickness of the decking and the top step will be shorter by the thickness of the decking. The reason for this is that the existing upper and lower decks act as a tread but they don't get any additional decking added to them. I wish I could add a drawing but hopefully this makes sense. Scott most likely pulled his measurements from the existing deck framing (not the finished surfaces) when installing the stair framing. I hope this information helps someone. Have a great day!

@@patgallagher6252 yeah, but you also have to set your top step down, lower, the thickness of your tread. That makes up for what you took off of the bottom. Once decked, it's all the same

You may have already addressed this in a later video, but why do you dig with a flat shovel? flat shovels are for moving around material like gravel, but are so much harder to dig with than pointed shovels. Just curious. Spent 4 or five summers digging foundations and retaining walls and one of the first things we learned was to use a pointed shovel, and better yet a demo hammer or excavator whenever you can.

@karlwale7162

The formula for the ideal stair is 2 × the rise +the going =600mm So the ultimate stair is 2 × 150 + 300 = 600mm or something within that formula Your stair 2 × 182 +320 = 684mm outside stair has a bit more flexibility that was the formula I was told.

I believe it's never good to add dry concrete mix into a hole and then spray water into it. Concrete mix is better put into a wheel barrow and mixed thoroughly with proper amount of water and using a hoe or shovel. Then you can know if your mix is right and you will have a much stronger batch. Call me old fashioned I guess.
