Thats how I peel and core-slice my apples. I use salt to put my apples in, the lemon juice leaves a tangy flavor and the salt dosen't, and the salt keeps them looking better. I put mine in a bowl like yours and use 1/8 tsp. salt. Then I wash them in another bowl with fresh water, when ready to jar them. I get my brine syrup hot almost boiling when I fill the jar with apples and have my water bath canner boiling ready for the jars.

I’m so loving your videos! I was gifted 2 1/2 bushels of apples. The freeze dryer is running non-stop. I’ve canned applesauce and pie filling. What do you use these for? Also, can you use plain water or must it be a syrup?

I’m sure your not to use metal bowls for acidity lemon juice. It breaks down correct?

@@artofcreationhomestead I don't know the variety but it is a prolific cropper of (dessert type) apples. I'm going to try and use a lot more this year, a lot have sadly ended up in the compost in the past. I'll be making a few gallons of apple wine and try my hand at apple vinegar too. Good luck to you thanks.

Do you have to use a sweetener? I want to do this to preserve apples for my parrot that should not have sugar. Also if you use honey versus sugar gown much honey do you use?

I was given 2 bushels of Jonagold apples. I'd like to try to water bath them in big slices like you did in your very informative and easy to follow video. Will I end up with a jar of mush?
@artofcreationhomestead
@artofcreationhomestead Жыл бұрын
First that is an amazing gift to be given. And next I have never had this recipe come out to be mush because the apples do most of the cooking in the water bath process.

My first time watching your channel. Very informative for those of us who don't know about canning. Do you think we could use Stevia, instead of sugar?
@artofcreationhomestead
@artofcreationhomestead 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind works. Yes, you can most definitely us Stevia in this. You can use any natural sweeteners honey, maple syrup, maple sugar, or stevia. But I would not recommend the chemical based sugar substitutes.

FYI. You might want to reverse the way you hold the jar lifter. That said, this is a great tutorial. Making slices for the first time today.
@artofcreationhomestead
@artofcreationhomestead 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for watching. The jar lifters that I use are spring loaded and the end that I am picking up the jars with is curved to wrap around the mouth of the jar and hold it very securely. If I turn them the other way they would not even fit around the jar or hold the jar secure.

I need to do this! What are some of your favorite ways to use these apples?
@artofcreationhomestead
@artofcreationhomestead 3 жыл бұрын
There are so many good uses for them. They make wonderful apple cobbler and apple dumplings. You can also thicken the syrup and use them for pies. Because they are already cooked you can use them as a short cut to a lot of apple recipes and even in apple cakes and fried apple pies. I even like to use them as cooked apples to eat with homemade biscuits or mash them up and use them as applesauce.
