Hi Kevin, thanks for watching mate. That spreader bar is a custom build I designed. Any good stainless guy can make you one to suit your boat and bait board. I still have it, it's come with me across 3 boats and will soon go into a 4th. Paired with a few good quality 3 way racks it negates the need for traditional snapper racks.

Thanks mate. The cubed Berley is a Seaford Baits product. I get it from Gone Fishin in Carrum Downs. I wouldn't use ganged hooks as it would add to much weight to the bait and offers less hook exposure to the twin hook snell rig.

It depends where. Here in Victoria 10kg is a trophy but in South Australia 15kg. We also fish differently offshore to bays. But you guys have any amazing fishery I'm somewhat jealous of. And we don't say "bar oh" just "six oh". You bloody kiwis and your weird ways..😉

Thanks for watching. In short, no. The fish will often run with the bait without actually swallowing it and that's why the suicide is so effective...hence the name. You'll miss more fish with circles. Hanging way straight down on a dropper rig circles are great. I just use a Black Magic Snapper Snatch for that and it works well.

Hi Rohan, generally not. PPB doesn't have that kind of bottom so snags are few and far between. Sometimes sections do have a thick sludgy weed but it's best to move and anchor away from them if you keep getting snags.

If you're fishing for big snapper put the small ones out whole, and use the heads of the bigger ones and the bodies separately or in big strips. If you're fishing for pinkies cut them up.

Occasionally I do it with live squid, but not often.

Heavy enough that you set the hooks easily and light enough that the fish can run when he wants to. You shouldn't be able to pull your line off easily but you should be able to without the line cutting into your hand. I hope that makes sense.

Hi Ian, assuming you're fishing in Port Phillip Bay, yes that's not ideal. Try just letting it sit on the bottom and keep the line loose for the bait to naturally flow around.

In Port Phillip no, any structure you may find will be small and when you mark fish on the mud they are constantly moving, they're never sitting still, and the area you're imagining in your head from the sonar image is larger than you're imagining. It's also about bait presentation, the fish wont always go for a bait dropped down on a paternoster rig and you cant really just drop a lightly weighted bait straight down. Also, the bigger fish are often sitting out away from the structure and the school.

@@HookedUpTV thanks a lot for this explanation. It never made sense to me before. For PPB fishing, what is your key driver for selecting a location to anchor up, when casting out? Is there an optimal distance you need to cast out? How does a sounder assist in this application then if casting out and away from the image shown on the MFD? Should a paternosta rig always be used when casting out from an anchored boat in PPB when targeting big snapper? Do software apps like RipCharts help at all when fishing for snapper in PPB? This app looks at water temp, up/down Wellings, sea bed contours, etc.? Cameron

@@Camh1968 you use the sounder to find the fish and then anchor on them. Then cast out as far as you can in different directions. Don't cast a paternoster just drop it down and cast out the running sinker rig as shown in the video. No Rip Charts wont help. Again, you cast out as the school of fish is much bigger than your boat, the images you're seeing isn't smaller than the boat. The fish are swimming around in a larger area than just below you. Don't over complicate it, find the fish, anchor, berley, cast out, wait for buckles, have fun.

I have never had great success doing that. If the squid is big I just cut it straight down the middle and do the same thing. I know cleaned squid works for guys in Westernport but I've never found it effective on snapper in Port Phillip. The more guts and gunk, the better.

Yeah sure I get that, I haven't always had a boat and I used to fish the piers a lot. I suggest always fishing a pier after a big blow, fish the tides and try and get them to coincide with sunrise and sunset. Even tide changes very late at night are great as there are less anglers and less pressure. Use fresh bait, buy it from the market if you cant catch it. Use long surf rods for casting distance.

Going to Lorne off the Rocks tomorrow... last week lots of guys there were pulling in 5kg+ Salmon (I missed a couple due to bent hooks) but going back for Salmon, hopefully a little wiser. Maybe I should have waited for your suggestions first but I just bought my 2nd Surf Rod last night (12ft, 6-10kg) using the Shimano Kairiki 30lb braided line and 4/0 red circular hooks with a star sinker... salted pilchards... I'd be keen to know your thoughts on the rights and wrongs of my setup. I have a couple of variations to this as back-up but we'll see I guess.

@@franksahin2546 that all sounds pretty good mate, however, the star sinker will snag around rocks, you're better off using a bomb or tear drop shape sinker, starts are good for the surf and sand. Also, tie some 8kg mono from the swivel to the sinker, that way if it snags while you're fighting a fish you'll bust off the sinker and keep the fish.

@@HookedUpTV Yes! that makes sense... I'll be testing out a pre-made surf rig with 2x leader setup. I'll use a mono line from the rig to sinker... I'll also keep that in mind when I start setting up my own rigs (rather than pre-made ones). I'll be forwarding your details to a bunch of friends whom DO "fish" but don't have the polish of a proper fisherman :)

Hi Mitch. There really is no best depth for snapper. You can catch them off a pier in 3 metres and out in 50 metres.

Ahh, sorry for the late reply, just saw this. Multiple line brands are being used so there are different colours so in the event of tangles untangling is far easier. A mix of Shimano, Sunline and Maxima.

@@officialWWM this style of fishing is essentially called stray lining, that means that the lines are moving and not weighted down heavily, if you used braid as soon as you tangled you'd never get it undone and you will always get tangles to a degree, especially when you are fishing wind against water.

Hooked Up TV I know what stray lining is, I do it all the time. I also do it with braid. I've never found knots to be a problem. I just don't enjoy the fight of the fish so much on mono, you feel everything on braid.

Hi Joe. I definitely always sound them first. In PPB structure is limited so I never worry about that. I just look for fish. If I don't see fish on my sounder I will not anchor. Get to know your sounder well and travel to where the fish are. At the moment they're off Mornington from 19m and deeper. Make sure you're always fishing the tide change and first and last light. Yes. You may be fishing 4 or 8 rods, if braid tangles it will be very hard to separate. Tangles are pretty much inevitable when you have wind against water. You can legally fish 4 rods so fish 4.

Hooked Up TV what are your thoughts on it ? Good boat ?

It's a good boat for bay work, it has an excellnt layout for fishing. It is too light in weight for rougher weather and isn't what I'd call a stable baot at rest. It's a very soft ride in short sharp chop but struggles in bigger waves.

If you're running a spread of 4, 8 or 12 lightly weighted rods, you're going to get crossed lines and tangles. If that happens in braid you'll never get the tangles out.

Because you're fishing multiple rods and you will eventually get tangles, you'll never get tangles out if you're using braid.

Was wondering the same question too. Apart from tangles what other reasons do you so strongly recommend using mono only ?
