We continue with PART 2 of our cellaring series today by answering questions from PART 1, discussing ideal conditions for proper storage (temperature, humidity & light), and the ultimate in bag storage: Mylar.
NOTE: my choice to not vacuum seal loose blends (shared in this video) is in regards to my long term storage (as I prefer mason jars). I think vacuum sealing is a great way to send loose samples safely in the mail! We do this all the time with great success. :)

I don't doubt, Kevin, that you have presented the definitive guide to storing tobacco. Well done, sir! For those who are concerned with temperature and humidity , there are cigar humidor cabinets that maintain a consistent temperature and humidity. They are not inexpensive, but not outrageous either. It might be worth considering if you are concerned about storing pipe tobacco that is rare or discontinued or are maintaining a limited cellar. It's easier to control the environment in a cabinet than in a room. Be well, stay safe, and keep it awesome - Merry Christmas - peace Nice to see the birds being taken care of 👍

Great video! Parafilm is an excellent material. The general consensus from the scientific community is if parafilm M were to suddenly become unavailable, labs across the country would simply shut down. Fortunately I came across the Mason Jars. Currently I have a little more than 30 tobaccos and also found pleasure in making suitable self sticking labels. This really is a giant leap to me compared to store some tobaccos in their tins. I keep the jars at normal quite stable room temperature in a cabinet drawer safe from light. Air humidity is not an issue where I live. All in all no science but I am glad I found out something about tobacco cellaring. Thanks for sharing these two videos!

Thank you for all this information! Wow, there’s a lot to think about in smoking a pipe 😂. So what if you buy a tin thinking you will not start smoking it for about 6-8 months. Would you parafilm that, or is the factory seal good for that period of time? I guess the better question is how long is the factory seal good for before I need to concern myself about the tobacco degrading? What’s the rule of thumb you use?

In its original non-stretched form it can be more brittle to work with if it is significantly old. Once stretched and applied it seals nicely and I haven’t noticed it becoming brittle. Loving this little series you're doing. I do have a question about using ball jars. I'm wondering that if the button in the center of the top is not concave (not all of them seem to sink down for me) does that mean that it is not sealed correctly? Thanks for any info
@hobbitonpiper
@hobbitonpiper 2 жыл бұрын
That button is really only for vacuum sealing the can for canned goods, where a person allows the hot contents inside to cool down and it sucks the lid down tight. This is not an issue for us at all, nor is it an indicator whether the lid is sealed or not. In fact having all of the air out of the jar isn’t even ideal for the aging process. As long as your rubber lid seal is on and screwed down tight then all is well. :)

Im qurrently experimenting with mylar bags, I bought the highest quality I could find: 7mil extra thick bags. I try to make my videos with longevity in mind, so hopefully age of the video doesn’t matter. I’m not sure what you are referring to with electric mason jar vacuum sealers, but if it involves removing air from the jar, you don’t want to do that. A little air inside is ideal for proper fermentation to occur over time. You do, however, need it to be air tight, which mason jars already are.

@hobbitonpiper

The point of vacuum sealing a pouch of tobacco is that it keeps it air tight in its original packaging, but yes it will compress the pouch some. Loose tobacco should go in mason jars in my opinion to prevent this compression.

@hobbitonpiper

Great question, and based on my experience and research, it’s important to leave a little airspace at the top of the jar, just like they do with tins. It still needs to be airtight, but give it a little air to work its magic over time :) I think how tight you pack the jar isn’t as important as leaving a little room at the top when you’re done.

@@hobbitonpiperThe differences in storing cigars and pipe tobacco are very interesting. Coming from the cigar world, even if you are putting cigars into an airtight Tupperware, you still want to toss a boveda pack in there to maintain the relative humidity - which changes in proportion to temperature. I wonder if this is because cigars need to maintain their shape / not crack due to thermal / RH variations, whereas with pipe tobacco this isn't really a concern and you only care about maintaining moisture content.

I would remove the tobacco from the plastic bags, and place the loose leaf in a jar that allows just a little air to remain at the top. 2/3rds air remaining is not ideal. However, your tobacco is still much better stored within any mason jar rather than a bag.

You made me think of a couple of questions on this topic…if stored/filmed in original package and the moisture content is too high and mold develops (thinking back a few years with some issues with C&D), how would one remedy maybe 4-9 years down the road, or is there even a remedy? Second question, is I’ve not paid close attention and don’t have any old tins to reference, but does SPC have the food grade lined tins? If not, I have some 8oz tins I need to relocate into mason jars. Appreciate the content and presentation style! Great work!
@russhicksart
@russhicksart 2 жыл бұрын
Mold must be addressed prior to tinning with proper anti-fungal and sanitary handling. I have it on fairly good authority that C&D has a handle on their mold issues of old; however, if spores are in the tin, without adequate anti-fungal, mold will develop. Which specific SPC tins are you referring to? As far as I know all Laudisi house brands (those tinned in their NC facility, C&D, GLP, etc.) use food grade liners in the tins. Clearly they have limited to no control over all products they sell or distribute.
@hoselfader
@hoselfader 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info on SPC, I just didn’t have any old tins around to look and I have a couple of unopened tins, but should be fine there. My question around the mold was related to unopened tins that are being stored. You can’t see inside, while storing, but if you open one years later and find mold, is it ruined or is there a remedy?
@hobbitonpiper
@hobbitonpiper 2 жыл бұрын
As Russ has stated, if proper anti fungal and sanitation procedures weren’t followed during production then there’s really nothing you can do if spores are in the tin. Consumers have lost hundreds of dollars of tobacco due to this in the past, so it’s a serious issue when it happens. I’ll try to work on a list of known pop top tins currently in production without the liner.

Bit late to the party but I have a question. I stay in India and it is very difficult to get good quality and variety of tobaccos. I currently have access to a limited range of Dan Tobacco products. While in the US/ Europe, you get the product in tins, like you have shown, its not the same packaging available in India. Here we get our blends in 100gm vacuum sealed pouches which are then put in a individual, sealed Ziplock pouch. So 2 layers of protection. the main by the Vacuum pack, then by the sealed zip pouch. Sadly, like you said, the ribbon and ready rubbed tobacco get congealed into a tight patty which has to be rubbed again. But most of the products I have access to are in the flake form, so the vacuum packing isn't an Issue. I want to know your opinion on long term storage of these packs in there original packaging. Felt it was similar to your vacuum sealing in the first vid, just these packs are prepared and sealed by the manufacturers themselves. Should I shift to mason jar? is there any difference in aging in a mason jar (which has a little bit of air) vs these original vacuum packs?
@hobbitonpiper
@hobbitonpiper Жыл бұрын
Great question. Yes, there is a difference. While your long term storage must be air tight, having a little room inside allows for proper fermentation to occur. In my opinion, your ideal solution would be to remove that loose tobacco from the vacu packaging and place it in a sealed mason jar for aging / long term storage.

When say paper lined tins, are you saying for example SPC or Sutliff?

@@hobbitonpiper so jar those after 5 years. What do you think about the wood block in the SPC barrel aged? Toss it in the jar? That's the first tobacco I'm aware of with wood in it. I'm wondering if it might mold over time
@hobbitonpiper
@hobbitonpiper Жыл бұрын
@@mikem77 I asked my buddy Russ and he said absolutely include the stave. The tobacco will mold way before the stave if spores are present. The stave is quite stable and typically charred and soaked in alcohol for a long time so all should be fine.

@@hobbitonpiper what do you think about Rattrays 100g tins? They seem to be ok long term from what I see...
@hobbitonpiper
@hobbitonpiper Жыл бұрын
@@mikem77 Rattrays have the food grade liner but with paper tin construction. They won’t last as long as McClelland or C&D. The food grade liner is only over the paper and doesn’t cover the interior metal parts and can therefore rust. They can last longer but we’ve seen them go bad between 5-10 years. If they don’t rust they can last much longer. To be ultra safe you would jar these after 5 years as well. Great question by the way.

I'd love to start smoking a pipe but I can't get over the potential health issues. I love how pipes look, I like the smell and taste of pipe tobaccos, I enjoy the correlation with Hobbits. Pipe smoking is magical. It's such a shame that so many great things are unhealthy. I've tried smoking a pipe and I loved it but I just couldn't stop imagining the potential mouth cancer or stuff like that. It sucks.

Whether it’s motorcycle riding, cycling, rock climbing, American football, or a myriad of other pastimes, they each come with their own dangers and health risks that one must accept to participate in them. Pipe smoking seems to carry the least amount of risk when it comes to tobacco smoke as we do not inhale, our mouths do not come in direct contact with the tobacco, and other risk mitigation techniques / practices can be used to further limit the risks. For me personally, stress was proving to be very detrimental to my health, and pipe smoking has been a great stress reliever. My own doctor told me, “You know what I’m realizing about pipe smokers? They outlive everybody else.” Now he said that somewhat in jest, and there are of course exceptions. In the end, everyone must choose how they want to live their one life and accept the risks of those choices. If I made a video on the subject, this would be the basis of my opinions on the matter. :)

Not at all! I responded to it and everything. That’s very strange, I certainly didn’t remove it. All I said was that many believe that while yes an air tight seal is necessary, leaving a little air inside at the top of your mason jars is a good thing for proper aging / fermentation. It’s a subject of debate. I personally never suck the air out of my jars. :)

@@hobbitonpiper I read your reply and attempted to respond. But KZfaq wouldn't let me. Ah well, no problem. The tobacco I want to store, is not for aging, but for LONG term storage. This year, I decided to anually buy tobacco and store it long term so I have something to enjoy until I die. I'm 37 now and assume tobacco is probably going to be considered hard drugs by the time I retire and finally have time to smoke more often.

@@Tywno regardless you will still want to have some air in the jar because you want to have both aerobic and anaerobic fermentation happening. If you pull all the air out you only get anaerobic. It would be a shame not to get both as tobacco is one of the few things on the planet that actually ferments aerobically.

@@russhicksart I understand the technical difference, but what would I miss with only anaerobic fermentation?
@russhicksart
@russhicksart 2 жыл бұрын
@@Tywno That's a great question. Most flue-cured connoisseurs acknowledge there is a flavor enhancement from leaving a certain percentage of air in the tin of high-sugar content leaf. McClelland was renowned for sourcing the highest sugar leaf (22-25%) and purposely leaving a certain volume of air in the tin. By removing the air you absolutely slow the fermentation process but also change it as the two processes are chemically very different. I'd imagine if you're storing primarily Virginias you'd want some air otherwise it might not matter. My understanding is the aerobic fermentation happens relatively quickly as the microbes consume the oxygen and then it settles into a predominately anaerobic fermentation.
