The long requested spark plug change video is here! In this video we change the spark plugs on Cliff's 2014 Silverado with the 5.3L EcoTec3 L83 V8 motor. The process used in this video should be identical to the 6.0L V8 and the V6 Silverado and Sierra Models as well.
This process should be identical for the following vehicles:
2014 - 2018 Chevy Silverado
2014 - 2018 GMC Sierra
And very similar to many other GM trucks like the Tahoe, Suburban, Escalade, and Yukon.

Gap between 0.037-0.043 in. Even with factory plugs, it is a good idea to always verify you have the correct gap

The #8 insulator seemed to have some carbon staining that the others didn't have, any thoughts on the issue?

Absolutely, with my race car the gap seems to be spreading periodically just from driving itself after certain amount of miles. Always good idea to check those suckers as they will put a strain on your performance.

Never touch these plugs concerning the gap. You can ruin them easily.

If you know how to gap them properly you won't damage them. We've installed thousands of colder spark plugs on boosted applications and have maybe damaged one. You have to know how to do it and have the proper tool tho

Thanks man! Getting ready to do mine in my ‘14 5.3. My dad turned wrenches for 35 years. A trick he showed me for getting plugs started if you don’t have room was use a piece of fuel line that will slip over top of plug and use it to get threads started.

Great video. The Gear Wrench spark plug socket-swivel-extension worked nicely. Used a few other 3/8" extensions depending on the position. Driver's side from top was no problem. Passenger side definitely need to pull the wheel and liner. Michigan dirt roads hiding the #15 Torx was the biggest challenge. Was able to torque #8 using the GearWrench socket and extension.

Worked perfectly for me thank you very much! I ended up doing #5 from above because the steering wheel column was in the way. This was a bit easier for me. And for #8 I didn’t have a 1” extension but it worked quite well with the spark Plug ratchet I had. I would recommend getting a flex ratchet.

Many props for showing how much easier and faster it is with the front tires and wheel well covers removed. That is the ONLY ONLY ONLY way to get to #8 unless your arms are actually made of rubber and it simplifies the other 3 on the passenger side exponentially. Great job👍🏻

thank you for this video. I started without removing the wheel but quickly changed direction and it was do easy. one BIG lesson though is to make sure wire #5 is not installed around the steering column. sounds simple but from the underside it's easy to get wrong. I broke the wire and had to replace it.

When I saw he had the wheel and fender guard off, I said to myself, “NOPE” due in no small part the fact that I’m a dumbass. And started taking them out from the top. The first 2 went in great, then the third back on the drivers side nearly had me in tears thinking I’d cross threaded and damaged the head, because I couldn’t get the new or started. So... then I decided to go back and start watching the video again. Took his advice and finished in about an hour. Thanks!!!

This sounds like one of those things that you should resign to the fact that removing the tires and fender well liner is the quickest way and move on. Spend two hours trying to be a hero or spend 20 minutes raising the vehicle, removing the wheels and another 1+40 actually removing and replacing the plugs and wires
@stephencannon3140

No Air/Impact or electrical tools were used or harmed in the Fi lining of this video. Good call. Even if you use cordless DO NOT use them to break or apply torque. In my case I can have it already threaded out by hand in the time that it takes me to find the cordless drill. Even longer when I realize that the drill I found has a dead battery. A tip from another video recommends doing something like this during the day while stores are open, especially if you accidentally cut or tear a wire. I personally would have new plugs and wires on immediate hand just in case...if not used they should be able to be returned.

I always start with the most difficult plug. This way you are not tired, frustrated or suffering from bleeding knuckles by the time you get to the hard part. When this fellow finally does change the plug wires they will have near 200k miles on them. Might as well do the job right the first time. Take your time, work carefully - and safely.

Thanks for doing the video on how to change the plugs. Just got done with my 14 Sierra today. One trick I found on number 8 was to put a u-joint on the spark plug socket, then use a 4" extension. I was able to hold it straight enough against the firewall that it came out pretty easy. Most of them were easy to break loose (even though this was the first change at 147,xxx miles) and then unscrew by hand using an assortment of extensions. The hardest one for me was actual #5 on the drivers side because of the steering column being in the way. Might have had something to do with only having a 2" and 4" extension. I think an 8" wobble extension would have made that one easier to break loose and unscrew..

Thanks for sharing your knowledge with this video. I used it for reference with my 2016 GMC Sierra Denali 6.2 with some slight tweaks. 1. In addition to removing the inner fender and the bazillion 10T torkx screws, I also had to remove the exhaust manifold heat shield to get to the back 2 drivers side cylinders plug wire heat shield. 2. I cut to the chase and did the same thing to get to the passenger side cylinders and it makes the overall process easier IMO as it provides more room for the tongs to get the spark plug heat shields off which honestly was the hardest part of this job. 3. Be sure to check the gap on your spark plugs. I bought TRQs and every one of them had too small of a gap per factory spec.

Excellent video, thanks. I used long extensions and swivel for #8. Went right along the rear of the wheel wheel (behind fuel line?) and just under the horizontal section of a/c condensate drain. Still, it's a challenge to see that plug or get a hand in to guide the floppy swivel. I spent more time cleaning out the body panel than I did changing the plugs-seriously! (you can't do that from the top). The debris that you show at the beginning of the video becomes a moisture trap and acidic over time (especially pine needles). And don't forget road salt if you've made a trip through the rust belt. Left uncleaned, body rust will start from the inside and make an appearance just behind the mud flaps-too late to clean anything then. The problem is that leaves, nuts, needles etc. fall in from the ends of the windshield trim and have nowhere to exit. I used a wire with a slight barb to work leaves, sticks etc. out though the thin opening on the inside-bottom of the panel while I was spraying water full-force into the top and side. We'll see what it looks like 100k miles from now.

My truck has 7 of the 8 removed and obviously it’s #8 that I didn’t do. I just felt wiped out going from the top w/o removing the lower mud guards to even want to try until now. So I am just going to do it the way you showed today and hope it works out. Changing my plugs at 77,000 made a huge difference in the engine running smoothly now I just need to finish.

I don't know why, but I watched this video this morning after changing the plugs last night. If you prefer to wake up with the backs of your hands scraped and raw, and your entire torso sore as hell, you can do it from the top. Just make sure you have a couple full length albums to listen to, and tell your spouse you will be a couple hours late to dinner. Hope I didn't tear anything up on top of the engine. I did get #8 from the bottom, but without jacking the truck up or taking the wheel off, just laid under there and fought it. Took about an hour just for #8. Wish I had seen the video first!!!!!!!

Great idea removing the fender wells. I never thought of that. Passenger side rear plug is a bear! I'm still not sure how I did it. One caveat: User anti seize on spark plug threads always. It is a very important step.

Thanks! Glad it helped! Actually ngk says never to use antisieze. It's fairly controversial lol. A few other comments get into it.

I have learned to just put anti seize around top of the treads because that is the only place the rust or corrosion is going to start.

Great video! Consider old hot rod trick of using 3/8” rubber tubing (8-10” long) over plug insulator as a leader to start / remove plug. Gripping is tight, and can’t cross thread in hole. Helpful on deep hole plugs (hemi heads) and trim to fit ugly tight spaces...

Well changed my plug in my 2018 Sierra by taking both front wheels and liner out, I wanted to clean and rust proof the fenders and it made changing the plug very easy, 3 hours and I wiped out everything, found 3 plugs out of wack with one half missing tip so don’t wait too long to change yours, I had 103,000 miles on mine, the best part it took the ticking noise away and idles much better

I checked the gap on the new AC Delco 41-114 ones and surprisingly they were all within specs, and don't you guys dare use any type of lubricant or anti-seize on the spark plug threads, that will make you over torque them and stretch out the block threaded holes
