While it wasn't difficult to change the oil on my tacoma, it was probably the most difficult oil change I've ever done. I've changed oil for over 30 years from lawnmowers, pickups, farm tractors and dads fleet of 18 wheelers. I definitely prefer a spin on oil filter.

Same. And just had the plastic housing crack on me. When buying a new one, the parts guy said every tech up there has broken several.

I think it's the pressure. The small replaceable filters is the only perk other than that it sucks.

My sister's drain plug fell out of her car on the freeway after a Subaru tech failed to use a torque wrench when tightening it (caught on camera, so Subaru covered the engine replacement). So while 30ft lbs might seem like a lot, I would always recommend following the manufacturer's torque specs as well as you can. Otherwise, this is a really nice, clear instructional video! Super helpful to see where everything is before you crawl under a vehicle.

Knowing how to change Your own oil & filter is priceless. Having owned only used cars since I started driving 25yrs ago, I can hoenstly say that taking the time to change Your own oil has saved me a ton of time in the repair shop, money, and headaches. Having worked at an oil change facility & changed the oil on my friends cars has been eye opening and sad how many ppl neglect the oil change intervals on their vehicles. Too many times have I seen sludge built up in the oil filter once its been removed. My father taught me that it's better to run the cheap oil & filter in shorter intervals than to try and go past 5k mi/interval. All oil breaks down, even if the car has been sitting. And ppl often times do not take into account how their driving habits affect the change interval as well. As lifelong toyota fan, my hat goes off to toyota not only for their engineering, but making the oil changes easier with simple things such as oil filter placement in most of their cars & trucks. It may be dirty & inconvenient at times, but the knowledge you gain being a bit more involved with your vehicle is priceless! But that's just me, I find an odd satisfaction in changing my own oil. Also, doing a simple drain & fill(if Your A/T has a drain plug) on your automatic transission fluid every 10k-15k mi. goes a long way to keeping your car running. It does take a bit of research(the right kind of ATF & how much new ATF to replace the old fluid with is paramount) but worth it as well. Instead of a pressurized Transmission flush, use the honda method: drain & fill every 100-200mi, 3 times. It may be a bit wasteful, but it has worked wonders for every make & model that I've owned that had a transmission drain plug.

Thanks man. I purchased my truck in march of 2023 and took it in for “scheduled maintenance” around 6k something miles. I had just watched a video saying the oil on Tacomas should be changed every 5k miles, so I thought they would for sure be changing my oil on my first service appt. Then they tell me that it doesn’t need an oil change until February 13 of 2024 🤦‍♂️. I thought that was strange and most of the people I know thought the same as me. I’m now at 8,715 miles and still no oil change til next year February. Idk why but I feel like it’s a way to get people to have problems and end up buying another vehicle. So after watching this I’m definitely changing my oil for piece of mind next weeks paycheck.

The newer Tacoma from what I can see is that the oil is thin and thus explains the whole new "OW-20" oil. Even if you ran 5k or even 8k depending on how you drive day to day. The oil friction shouldn't change much but your Tacoma will definitely be burning oil. Try this on your next drive...once you come home, go ahead and open that "oil cap". Notice anything funny? Yeah that your oil burning and causing smoke when you go too long between interval. The new trucks are meant to run full synthetic and so when you go for a "regular" oil change you are still getting "full synthetic" and when you request for "synthetic" oil, all they did was just up your charge for the same thing...lol. In order for the truck's of today to run at the efficiency that they are supposed to...most if not all run on synthetic over conventional oil. If I was you, go ahead and change up the oil right away! For my older Tacoma 2000 and 2003, I run a thicker oil because at 250,000...I can't run the same original oil because my engine has been worn down over time thus needing thicker oil that doesn't slip in between anything.

WARNING: Use only Toyota OEM Filters/Parts. Yes, you pay more but it's designed that way for a reason. That ACDelco filter creates too much pressure and has less filtering material, as well. Buy Toyota OEM parts. Also, change your oil every 3-4 thousand miles and ignore all of the BS about 7-10K miles. Just ask an honest mechanic.

my 1967 Chevrolet had a canister all filter. I was complaining to my mechanic about how messy and time-consuming it was, and he advised me that for a few dollars you could get an adapter plate which bolted ion in place of the original canister, allowing the use of a simple spin on filter. Isn't it great the Toyota has now regressed us 57 years in automotive design! SMH changing my own all of us about the last maintenance I could do on my vehicles, looks like now I can't even do that. So good tutorial but you should always thread in a bolt or lug nut on a vehicle first before tightening to rule out crossthreading. Then tighten to spec. Trust me, I had dealer crossthread bolt on my old belly plate on 1993 4Runner and when removing, the bolt, i could never thread a bolt back in ever again. I also had a shop once do the same thing on a lug once. I had to bust off lug nut and replace lug. Not a good time with either.

I think it's there to prevent the filter housing from walking off if you don't tighten it all the way. It hits those ribs/tabs. On my wife's corolla with a similar design it does a little more to stop it from backing out and I had to hold the tab out of the way to get it started. Kind of a nice peace of mind feature.

@ 5:50 you show the filter drain. I had a 13 Venza and currently own a 12 Lexus RX 450h (same engine on both), and they have this. I have found it nearly IMPOSSIBLE to get the drain cap unscrewed without unscrewing the whole filter cap. And, once it's loosened, no way is that drain cap loosening. I've tried tightening the filter cap extra tight and then removing the cap - it never loosens for me. But I just end up with plenty of oil to drain from the filter. For anyone who experiences this, it's okay!

That's a Teflon drain plug gasket and they're really good can get them pretty much anywhere. Why you going to put that cheap Amazon garbage washer on your brand new truck???

Actually those are a one time use crush washer and once they are crushed you can't re-use them. Those rubber lined washers I have used for 10 years with zero problems and they are my preferred washer. Thanks for watching!

@@2carpros you call that a crush washer?? I replace them every time because they're cheap but it's not a crush washer. And it can be reused

30ft lbs probably too much for that chinesium crush washer for sure. Stick to oem parts and specs plz

It's not the washer I'm worried about. 30 foot pounds on threads like seem like too much to me. But that's my opinion! Be careful or grip and rip to 30! Up to you.

It is only $54 at Walmart for this oil change. You might save $14.

Well, I'd rather save the money and I know the job is done right. I have heard countless horror stories about cheap shops like that end up costing the customer thousands in the long run. That 14 bucks you spent might end up costing you a whole lot more. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for posting, but the TACO is over engineered. Special puller just to remove the oil filter, and an special purge plug to remove oil trapped in the system. Remember when the plug drained the oil pan, and you could simply removed the oil filter by hand. Anything Toyo Motor Corporatism can nickel & dime their product owners over. And the Fob...I don't even want to get started on that garbage.

My 2020 Tacoma 2.7 had the old filter design. I just bought the 2023 Tacoma 3.5 & look forward to working on it. The new filter design probably works better & much cleaner. Worth buying the tool to remove filer VS wear oil all over hands/face. Great video. Thx

You can just use the filter wrench and loosen the filter and most if the oil comes out. Then lower it down and dump it in your drain pan. A little more messy but you don’t have to mess with the plastic adapter.
