@@johnlawson910 Yes. It will only remove a fraction of the fluid because most of it tars up, dissipates or leaks. All I was able to remove was what I demonstrated within the video. I didn't measure it. Just change it often and it will help clear out the past tar/gunk overtime.

@@JCMFixplease please please respond to this so I have a 2012 Lincoln mks awd and I was having a hard time shifting to park it would get kinda ruff then when I went back to drive and back to park it would be fine so I took it to continental which is a mechanic shop near me they said they worse case scenario they need to replace it it would be 3200 dollars for labor and the part and the sealant but they said best case it may just need some sealant my question to you is how should I go about this if it’s leaking slowly is it a big deal like should I hop on this right away or can I just do what you did in this video and I’ll be ok i guess my question is… is it normal to leak???

@@AR17Pro Your issue seems like a transaxle issue and not a power transfer unit issue. There is not a sealant for the transaxle. It's either working or it's not. There are seals for both but super hard shifting from Park to Drive and Vice versa is beyond a leak. It's an internal issue with the shifting solenoid or the entire transaxle (aka transmission) itself.

I have a 2012 MKZ and just did this about a month ago thanks to you. Was able to get about a water bottle amount out but plan on changing it again in a few months just to make sure. Excellent video and very well presented. As a Ford mechanic for the last 43 years, I have seen many of these PTU systems come in for failure. Most that fail are on the 3.5 that is encased in heat sources. When you open them up, there is usually nothing but black sludge left. The newer PTU units are easier to do with the drain plug, but were still a pain with the 3.5 and the exhaust manifold in the way. Ford really misled people when they called this "lifetime" fluid. The owners that ignore that advice and have this fluid changed every 20-30K miles have very little or no issues with the PTU.

@@alexswift Because the PTU within the 2009 mkS does not have a true "drain plug." It's more of a service inlet port to put fluids in. Yes, you can extract the fluids from that same hole, but you need a fluid extractor as shown within this video or a small pump that "sucks" to remove the old fluid/tar.

From other videos that I watched they recommended putting a thread sealant on the threads before putting the plug back in.

It depends on the condition of the plug and its threads. Yes. It's good to put a thread sealant on it but mine was ok because it still had the factory goo/sealant on the threads. It was the first time it was cracked open and the plug was still in good condition. So all is well on that end.

For vehicles with a drain plug and a fill plug, remove the fill plug first because it would suck to drain the fluid and not be able to refill it. I'm going to change the fluids in my 1996 4WD Daihatsu Hijet mini truck. It has 45,000 miles and almost certainly never changed in 27 years - the manual transmission, transfer case, front differential and rear differential. I'll be using my little hand held Mity Vac to pressurize the gallon jugs to push the gear oil up a clear vinyl tube to refill the fluids. Use a new copper crush washer on the plugs to prevent leaks.

2012 Mazda CX9 here. Apparently it uses the same PTU and suffers from the same issue. I drained the fluid out but I was only able to get about 3 ounces out. How much fluid do you get out when doing this? I think some of the gears in there prevented the tube from reaching the bottom or the sludge is too thick to suck through the pump... or I wonder if it's full of sludge at the bottom. I plan to run it a bit, let the new fluid break up some sludge and drain it again.

I don't know the amount the the liters that I was able to extract was minimal as shown. But yes, your plan is the best thing one can do. I am doing the same to break up the previous sludge. I hope these cars/SUV's can last as long as possible. Thanks Joe!

Yes and no. Some 2014 Explorer's have a "PTU cooler." Without a PTU cooler, the instructions are the same as shown in this video. With a PTU cooler: With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION, Lifting Points. Vehicles with a PTU cooler NOTE All vehicles with a PTU cooler will have a drain plug. Remove the drain plug and drain the PTU . Torque to 20 Nm (177 lb-in). Remove the RH catalytic converter. Refer to Exhaust System. Remove the PTU temperature sensor heat shield bolts and the heat shield. Disconnect the PTU temperature sensor electrical connector. Unclip the PTU temperature sensor wiring harness from the retainer clip and position aside. NOTE The PTU temperature sensor can be removed using a 15mm crows foot and extension. Remove the PTU temperature sensor. With the vehicle on a flat, level surface, fill the PTU . The fluid must be even with the bottom of the PTU temperature sensor opening. Fluid capacity is 0.53 L (0.56 qt.). NOTE Replace the O-ring before installing the PTU temperature sensor. Replace the O-ring and install the PTU temperature sensor. Tighten to 14 Nm (124 lb-in). Clip the PTU temperature sensor wiring harness back into position. Connect the PTU temperature sensor electrical connector. Instal the PTU temperature sensor heat shield and heat shield bolts. Tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in). Install the RH catalytic converter. Refer to Exhaust System.

Is this the same fluid that you lose when pulling out the cv shaft?
@JCMFix
@JCMFix 2 жыл бұрын
Depends which side of the Power Transfer Unit you are referring to and which seals are failing. On the intermediate shaft side (right side of the PTU), yes, if the PTU is leaking, it is leaking the PTU gear oil fluid that I am showing in this video (75W-140). But if the half shaft (CV axel) seal is bad, transmission fluid could come puking out of that same area on both the left and right sides. If it's the left side of the PTU that bolts to the transmission, if the transmission is leaking from it's connection seal with the PTU, then it's leaking the Mercon V fluid. Both sides of the PTU have at least 2 seals two keep the PTU differential fluid in it's place and the transmission fluid in it's place. Overall, the PTU is just small transfer case that is always spinning in a Lincoln mkS. In four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles, a transfer case is either connected directly to the back of the transmission, or by a small driveshaft further back in the vehicle. When activated, the transfer case takes power from the engine to the back wheels. Depending on the kind of vehicle, power may go to the rear wheels on a full-time or part-time basis. All-wheel drive systems are typically on all of the time while a four-wheel drive system are activated by either pressing a button in the vehicle or by manipulating a selector lever, typically located near the transmission hump on the floor. In both systems, transfer case fluid keeps the internal parts of the transfer case lubricated. Over time, transfer case fluid will become dirty and break down. When transfer case fluid breaks down you may notice shuddering from the vehicle while turning or a whining noise from the gears in the transfer case.

I have a 2013 Edge and I hear some grinding at low speeds, and more of a howling at higher speeds. Just had front bearing replaced and that didn't fix it. I'm thinking my PTU fluid hasn't been changed for quite some time (165K miles on the car) Could the noise be coming from the PTU because of bad/old gear oil?
@JCMFix
@JCMFix 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely change the PTU gear oil fluid if you can as the PTU's within the Edge are known to tar up at pretty low miles. I doubt it's the cause of the howling at higher speeds. It may be the CV AXLES (AKA half shafts) or just a bad hub all together.

The PTU fluid for your 2012 mkX AWD is exactly what I presented in this video. if you want to buy the Lucas Oil version, the link is above in the description. If you want to buy OEM, it's this: Motorcraft® SAE 75W-140 Synthetic Rear Axle Lubricant XY-75W140-QL (US); CXY-75W140-1L (Canada). ( amzn.to/3LY2ISj ). Yes. It's says REAR and this is correct from Ford. It is for the rear differential and PTU up front. Apply silicone sealant to the drain or filler plug threads and install the plug. Doesn’t the car need to be level when you refill? Seems like you could overfill or under fill with the front jacked up like that.
@JCMFix
@JCMFix 3 жыл бұрын
Correct. But the basic tenent is to fill until it's starts leaking out then plug it back up. Thats simple enough for me to not really worry about the slight car leveling. These PTU's are prone to fail and like I said in the video, i will just keep sucking it out and refilling at 30,000 miles where before the company deems it as a "lifetime" fluid. So keeping fresh gear oil in it even if it's slightly under or over is ok with me in regards to this crappy part that is bound to fail anyways. I am just lengthening it's life span.

Thanks for sharing. How's the A/C compressor? Turn off the fan and a/c, See if you still smell the burning smell with the windows up. Then turn on the fan without A/C and see. Then with A/C.

@@JCMFix Thank you for responding to my question. It happens only with heavy acceleration, whether A/C is on or not (only short time, bad burning smell). I have heard that PTU may spit some fluid through vent, when overheating. But the worst thing is rumbling noise under the floor (not very loud but annoying). Car was twice at the dealer with other issue but they did not say anything about my complain about it. That's why I don't know, should I request PTU change or not. I have new tires new brakes, ball bearings are fine, brand new rear differential etc. Something is making this noise and vibration. To replace PTU is expensive so don't know what to do, since dealer did not say anything.

@@questdental The rumbling may be your CV axles possibly going out. The smell could possibly be the PTU but I'm not sure. I had a similar smell and thought it was the PTU. I changed the PTU fluid and the smell remained. It turned out that my A/C compressor was failing. Once I changed that out, the smell went away.

@@JCMFix Thank you. In my case, everything seems to be okay, so I don't know. Have to go to the dealer and resolve this problem. Take care :)

nice to meet you I'm from Japan, but I'm in a 2014 Ford Explorer 3.5L NA car. Is it possible to mix mission oil and ATF Marcon LV with differential oil? A phenomenon that ATF decreases occurs.

Thanks Haru Haru!

thank you for your reply. No, the front differential oil overflows and leaks. Moreover, ATF is reduced. I want to know what the cause is.

To play Devils advocate, 192000 miles is generally considered a "lifetime" of a vehicle. I agree it's not a lifetime fluid but 192k is pretty good on the original.

Okay guys this is how I changed my PTU fluid I jacked it up put jack stands under it got my creeper crawled under the car found the PTU. Then I got out all of my tools and quickly found out that I didn't have the right tools I needed. So this is how I solved the problem for my 2013 Lincoln MKS Eco-boost. First I put all my tools away, pulled out the jack stands and lowered the car. After that I drove the car to EZ lube and had the fluid changed for $60. So that's how I changed the PTU fluid. Using cash is much easier than crawling around underneath a car. Cause I just plain gave up on the damned thing! Very easy way to change the PTU fluid I highly recommend it! No busted knuckles, no mess and no effort. Almost any problem can be solved if you throw enough money at it!

Incredible, it would have taken nothing to put a drain plug in to drain the so called lifetime fluid!

I thought about doing that at one point. But the extractor seems to work well so I stick with it.
