How to change rear differential fluid on MK4 R32 ~ NOT HALDEX! Today we replace the rear differential fluid in the MK4 R32. There is no differential fluid service interval for this car. If you are planning on replacing your differential fluid, be sure to use the right diff fluid or gear oil for your application.

A good tip for changing any fluid is to crack loose the fill plug before you drain anything. It’s really crappy when you drain fluid and can’t fill it back up

Lower half for simple servicing and if ya wanna get your wrenching on, stack the second half. Friggin Perfect!!

Great video Charles ! Recently did mine on a 2015 Q7., Front, Rear Diffs and transfer case. Was little surprised to see it almost as dark as the one you showed at just 35K. Is it normal to go dark at this little mileage ? I did not see a lot of metal sediments though.

How important to do you feel it is to have the car as close to exactly level as you can get it (both left/right and front/back) to get the fluid level right? I always try to get my cars super level when checking any fluid level, but this application seems like having the left to right angle not level could throw the capacity off quite a bit.

how resilient are the pinch welds in the jack area? I noticed you raising and lowering the car while one side was on jack stands at the jack locations on the pinch welds. I have some service that will require me to put my GTI up on 4 jack stands and I've been curious on how to get four stands on the pinch welds; starting with either 2 on the front, then 2 on the back or maybe going 2 on the left, then 2 on the right. The .:R found the right owner and I'm sure is loving every minute while in your garage and on the road with you behind the wheel. Cheers.

So.. quick question. I recently did my transmission fluid and I have a 5 speed mk5 jetta.. because I had to fill it in 2 holes, does that technically mean that I was also doing the front diff/transaxle/transmission? And, it shifts like butter! yay. Now I gotta do the same for the rear dif now.

Thank you in advance if possible shining some light to my question.

Hey Charles, Why would you shake the gear oil. As far as I know gear oil will not separate. Does that OEM fluid have some friction modifiers in it. Also just a tip lossen the fill plug before you drain the oil. Just incase it won't come out . Ask me how I know. Another great video. I love the sound of that thing. Cheers Mark.
@HumbleMechanic
@HumbleMechanic 6 жыл бұрын
Good call on loosening the fill bolt. I always had to get it out and the fluid in no matter what. Hahaha. Shaking it is just in case any of the packages settle. Odds are they don’t, but it’s good habit. Unless you shake it so much you aerate the fluid. Haha
@rogerpearson9081

Amazing there is no service interval for diff oil or Power steering fluid. Sure it does not get contaminated like engine oil but that sample you drained looks like it has had some temperature which has cooked it. I have experience with truck diffs that regularly run at 100+deg. C in summer and the oil in them goes very dark. I changed the oil in my power steering system on my Ford when it got very slip and stick when cold. The oil looked very watery too and of course the smell. Afterwards, I found a lot of fine sparkly bits that would have been going round and round in the pump and steering box grinding away. Steering was much better afterwards too.

Also it will be good advice to derail fill plug BEFORE you drain all oil from differential, there is some situation when you just can't unscrew it because of rust or mud or whatever and you no longer have oil in differential and it can be pain in ass.

My wife’s 2017 Acura MDX SH-AWD called for the A6 service at just 12K miles. This is an engine oil change and an AWD diff fluid change. I was surprised that it called for this at only 12K miles. The rear diff fluid change ran me $110+tax done at the dealer. I’ll likely do this myself in the future. Is this common with many AWD crossovers to need this service done so frequently?
@HumbleMechanic

They may like to change the diff oil very early as it gets the initial wear in metal out of the oil and ensures a long trouble free diff life. The next service interval for it would be a lot longer. I remember my boat motor called for a gear oil change at 20 hours and the next one at 160 hours. All about getting the initial wear in metal out of the fluid
