Great video. I changed the belts without taking off the air intake boxes or unbolting the intake/ throttle body. It might have been a little more difficult but saved a lot of time. Thanks again James!

The hardest part of the job will be those two bolts that mount the Y intake tube. If you have a 1/4 inch drive air wrench, that would be perfect. I did not. It was very hard for me. And hand thread the bolts back in using the electrical tape trick I mention in the video.

There are plenty of tips in the Facebook Maserati groups on buying one' what to look for, what to look out for, don't be afraid of the ones with normal mileage, be wary of those with low mileage, there may a reason it's low, and do plenty of research on what you want in it. I'm helping a budy of mine buy one now. I told him to take his time. Don't get the 1st one.

Excellent video -- First tried to do this without removing the airboxes and it was to tight for my arms. I was able to do it once I removed the airboxes but did not have to unbolt the intake/throttle body, that saved some time. I started about 10 am and finished around 3 pm but took a ton of breaks. Probably a 2-3 hour job straight. I did spark plugs, belts yesterday, and I plan on tackling all of them over the next few weeks. Thanks again

Good video. If you remove the belly pan and only the passenger air box, the belts are accessible. No need to pull the intake hose. If you just undo the coolant hose tab there is enough room to maneuver. A few hours and patience with that clip is key. Thanks for the tips.

is the tool needed for the alternator belt or is there a chance you can just wind it on over either of the pulleys
@JamesDIYGarage
@JamesDIYGarage 5 жыл бұрын
The tool is pretty much required. You could use a pair of very small vice grips to hold the belt on the pully. But you risk damaging the belt. The tool is not expensive. If you have a friend who is a mechanic, he/she may have one you can borrow. But your not going to get it on with out something to hold it on the crank pulley while you turn the crank shaft.

Haven’t had a chance to look at my alternator yet, but I’m assuming you can loosen a bolt or two to give it slack so you can replace the belt. Extremely risky to just cut the belt and depend on a sole tool to work.
@JamesDIYGarage
@JamesDIYGarage 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry, you can't loosen the alternator for a belt change. The tool did work great for installing the belt. Just not for removing it. Just cut the belt. Best way to do it.
@bmwmsport11

James DIY Garage so I assume the factory manual calls for some sort of belt stretch tool? My compressor belt(one closer to engine) is showing cracks but my alternator belt is perfect. Only 38k miles.
@JamesDIYGarage
@JamesDIYGarage 5 жыл бұрын
@@bmwmsport11 Yes, I put a link to the tool I used in the video. But it does not work so well for removal of the alternator belt, I just cut mine. The factory manual also calls for the replacement of the alternator belt if you remove it. Stretching to again to remove it after it was stretched to install and used for a while makes it loose. So even if you manage to get it off without cutting it, it is recommended you replace it anyhow. It's not that expensive.
@bmwmsport11

Got to my plugs and belt today. Turns out, you can’t replace the accessory belt without removing the alternator belt due to how it’s routed on the pulley. So I guess ima gonna have to order the tool and another belt...

There is a 7 part video series on my channel called 70K Mile Service On My Maserati SQ4 of which this video is the 3rd part. All those I did for my 70K Mile service. Obviously I did not do it all in one day. I did all these videos over a 7 week period, one at time on a weekend. If you are not an experienced mechanic, I would focus on one part at a time. Watch the Video, take notes, and have your phone or laptop handy while performing the task outlined in the video so you can look at "How did he do that again?" .

@@JamesDIYGarage Yes, I checked several times. If the tensioner was bad, why do you think it didn't happen with the old belt?
@rleader1
@rleader1 2 жыл бұрын
Just to add, this video was VERY helpful. I would like to mention to ONLY get OEM belts as you'll be doing this a 2nd time like I had to due to squealing belts (Continentals). Once I removed those and put on the OEM belts, ZERO squealing. The 1st time took me about 2.5 hours, much of which was trying to fit my hands in to remove the 2 bolts for the intake. I also removed the upper air box housings & filters, not the lowers. This 2nd time I didn't remove ANYTHING other than the two upper air box housings and filters & I completed the job in under 1 hour. I cut BOTH belts to remove as it was just easier & I knew the Continental belt was 100% not going back in as I still had the original long belt and the new OEM belts. Hope this helps!

You changed the serpentine at 70k... is that the first change? Or, does Maserati call for a change at an earlier time (less miles) as well?
@JamesDIYGarage
@JamesDIYGarage 3 жыл бұрын
The Owners Manual has the service intervals in it under Maintenance and Care. According to the Owners Manual the belts should be changed at 50,000 miles or 4 years, which ever comes first. I just did not think mine had been changed, it had 53K on it when I bought it, so I did it myself as soon as I could.

That depends. I follow what's in the Owners Manual. But if you just purchased the car and you do not have any service history, I would change Oil, air filters, cabin filter and check the Spark plugs and brakes and replace if necessary. I would also check the serpentine belts for cracks or wear and replace if necessary.

Clips on the intake tube are to be completely installed in their regular position before putting the tube together. It will click into position just like they do on Audi and Mercedes.
