Maserati and BMW dealership in Taiwan told us there is no need to change the ZF transmission fluid. They won't do it because of possible complications or the warranty expires if you self change.

The transmissions in our cars were not manufactured by Maserati or BMW. They were manufactured by ZF. ZF says the fluid DOES need to be changed. If you go to my Google Drive share (Link is in the description) you will find ZF's documentation.

I don't know about Taiwan, but here in the U.S. it is against the law for manufacturers to void a warranty for doing self maintenance or having it done by an independent auto shop.

ZF Transmission fluid absolutely needs to be changed. My old car had a 6HP Transmission which is the predecessor to 8HP, if you didn't change the fluid they break. Maserati may claim in their Manual it's a "no maintenance" item, but that is not true. In the US under Warranty Maserati may provide you a New Transmission if it breaks. Not under Warranty a New Transmission is $14,000 plus dollars. New Fluid and New Pan is much easier and much less expensive than a New Transmission :-)

James, excellent detailed video coverage. Thank you uploading. Question, since old pan is in good shape, why do you need to change it? Just flush oil and reuse the old pan don't work?

The filter is built in and needs to be replaced.

Hi James, very informative video by the way. I am about to carry this out on my diesel Ghibli and wondered where you refer to the front driveshaft, is that because your car is four wheel drive? And if so am I right in thinking that because mine is only rear wheel drive, that drive shaft won't be present? Thanks in advance Jamie

You would be correct. Your car does not have the front drive shaft. So it would be a lot easier for you.

Thanks allot my friend, job will done your video came in good time. I have to change mine to. I have an issue in my Ghibli 2016 base with 120,000 KM and i need your kind advice, recently i face an Engine light on after checking the error with OBD it gave me this number U0129. I erased it but it came again. Any recommendations or advice for this issue. Your kind advice is highly appreciated. Thanks allot.

This is a great video and I started the process yesterday and will finish today. I can't get the Torque app to read Transmission temp on my 2017 SQ4 any ideas? I bought the same OBD2 connector that you show

@@JamesDIYGarage Nope, I ordered 3 from Amazon and none of them provided a trans temp option. I don't think the 2017 models send the information. Fortunately, I was able to get enough fluid in the first and when I started the second day process I let the fluid heat and I let the fluid overflow into a glass that I read with a infrared thermometer. I kept doing that until it was at temp and then when it was I sealed it. Thanks for all of you help

James I have a 2014 Quattroporte. I uploaded the latest version Torgue, I am getting no data received on transmission temp. Does my car need to be 2017 or later for the data to be read?

It's in the video, I removed it from the transfer case side.

so how many liters of oil did you end up using?

Almost 5 liters all together including the final topoff. I know these hold about 8 liters, but for just a fluid change that's enough. I did buy 8 liters.

what was that bluetooth unit you were using for the temp?

Any Bluetooth OBDII scanner should be able to read transmission oil temp. They are not expensive. Amazon.com

You can read the trans temp on the dash. Just change the settings to read the tranny temp.

Thank you for another great video. I learned a lot from you for my 2017 Levante S. I found some interesting thing about the oil pan. As you mentioned, both your and my car have same oil pan. But at scuderiacarparts, your oil pan part # is 673003178, $329 but my oil pan part # is 673005766, $415. I lifted my car and took a photo of the pan and the original part # was 670005568 (in this video, it looked like you have same original part number on the side of the oil pan). I called local Maserati dealer and asked for the original part # but they said they don't have the part # in the system. rather he said they kept updating part # and my oil pan # was same as at scuderiacarparts, 673005766 (dealer price is $950). Maserati changes part # and increases the price for same item? If this is true, I can buy manufacture recommended oil pan kit for way less, ZF 1087.298.364. What do you think about this?

Have you ever changed the control arms? My Ghibli had 62K and the alignment shop said the bushings are wearing.

@@JamesDIYGarage sorry, there might be a English UK to English USA language barrier, basically just means it looks like a pain in the ass, lots of if yes no and maybe with regards to filling the transmission and the removal of a driveshaft. Why a sensible location for the filler plug couldn't be found I don't know, I understand it's more difficult on a longitudinal mounted engine but still, nasty.

@@aHumanCookiee lol, thanks for translation. Transmission was not made by Maserati, it was made by a German company called ZF. Same for the AWD system I believe. Was not made by Maserati. So they just had to make it work.
